Admiring from the Backseat: Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2013 Edition

Rose Byrne in Lanvin

Because we’re not yet ready to let go of awards season and we have a feeling you aren’t either, we’ve going to dwell on Oscars Sunday just a little longer. We’ve gone ahead and rounded up our favourite after-party looks from the annual post-Oscars Vanity Fair soirée, and they’re just as glamourous as those on our best dressed list from the main event itself.

Red carpet regulars like Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth knocked it out of the sartorial ballpark once again in a ruffle and lace Givenchy number and embroidered Giambattista Valli frock respectively, while Amy Adams and Elizabeth Banks stunned in fringed Oscar de la Renta and printed Alexander McQueen.

Our hands-down favourite though was Rose Byrne, who served up possibly her best red carpet appearance ever, surprising us in a gorgeous white Lanvin getup. An incredible improvement over her horrendous SAG Awards outing!

Naomi Watts in Armani Privé

After an epic 3.5 hour Academy Awards ceremony tonight and red carpet coverage that was almost as long, the 2013 awards season has sadly come to an end. With stunning silver screen stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain stepping out in incredible gowns by the likes of Armani Privé, Dior Haute Couture  and Oscar de la Renta, however, this year’s awards season definitely went out with a sartorial bang.

Our favourite leading ladies certainly saved their best frocks for last, with most topping their looks at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. From Kerry Washington in pink Miu Miu to Stacy Keibler in metallic Naeem Khan, these are our top 10 best dressed from the 2013 Oscars. Who made your list?

MObama Favourite Jason Wu’s 10 Most Memorable Red Carpet Moments

Jason Wu‘s name has been on everyone’s lips since the moment Michelle Obama arrived at the 2013 Inaugural Ball this week in his custom scarlet red gown, the second time she’s bestowed such an honour on him. The New York-based designer has developed quite the following since that fateful day 4 years ago when MObama stepped out in his ivory creation at her first Inaugural Ball. He’s collaborated with Target, launched his contemporary line Miss Wu, and continued to dress leading ladies around the world in his glamourous and sophisticated designs.

Because we’re obsessed with all things Wu – and Mrs. Obama has given us the perfect excuse – we’ve gleefully trolled through the archives and rounded up the 10 most memorable red carpet moments courtesy of Jason Wu, inauguration outfits notwithstanding. From Diane Kruger (pictured above) and Karlie Kloss at the Met Ball to Zoe Saldana and Jessica Pare on the awards show circuit, the designer’s devotees always look nothing short of spectacular. Whether it’s a whimsical bow-topped gown for Michelle Williams, a pink princess frock for Fan Bingbing or a sexy LBD for Jaime King, Jason Wu never fails to deliver.

Admiring from the Backseat: Screen Actors Guild Awards 2012 Edition

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2012

Awards season continued tonight with the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which meant another Sunday evening of red carpet fashion. To my delight, a few actresses donned designs that were fresh off the Spring 2012 haute couture runways: Zoe Saldana stunned in Givenchy while Natalie Portman looked impeccable in Giambattista Valli.

Rose Byrne of Damages also took to the red carpet in couture; she was a pleasant surprise in a sparkling ivory Elie Saab jumpsuit. Rounding out my top five looks of the evening were two style frontrunners this awards season, Emma Stone and Michelle Williams, who rocked the red carpet in Alexander McQueen and Valentino respectively.

Did you watch the SAG Awards? Who were your sartorial favourites?

Admiring from the Backseat: Zoe Saldana

From the start of awards season till now, not only have I not seen Zoe Saldana take a wrong turn, but she’s looked absolutely stunning at every event she’s attended. In the Dominican Republic last night, Zoe accepted an award in a beautiful ombré gown by English designer Amanda Wakeley. The colour palette, the draping and the cinched waist combined for another gorgeous look that didn’t disappoint.

Admiring from the Backseat: Oscars 2010 Edition

The Academy Awards are like Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to me; I stay glued to the TV from start to finish with nary a pee break, while stuffing my face with way too much food and drink as I anxiously await the results. The main difference, however, is that helmets and hockey sticks aren’t nearly as interesting as the haute couture gowns that walk the Oscars red carpet.

Last night, while I did find the sartorial choices of the Hollywood elite to be a tad on the safe and boring side, there were still a handful of red carpet standouts that showed up looking like true movie stars.

Best dressed, in my humble opinion, goes to Diane Kruger. Her ensembles had been falling flat throughout this year’s awards season, but she apparently saved the best for last. Diane and Chanel are a match made in couture heaven. Of all the Oscars gowns I’ve seen since I started watching so many years ago, this is the one I’ll be daydreaming about for many years to come.

Zoe Saldana, however, had been consistently fabulous at every awards ceremony, and she did not disappoint last night. In fact, Zoe took things to a whole other level. Not only did she show up in an exquisite purple Givenchy gown, but she managed to change the minds of naysayers who weren’t fans of the gown when it was presented on the Spring 2010 haute couture runway. Zoe took a risk with her daring choice, but it definitely paid off.

Sandra Bullock had the night of her life with a Best Actress nod, and she did it in style in a stunning metallic Marchesa gown. She’d worn some questionable dresses this awards season, but she pulled it out when it mattered the most. Sandra looked the most beautiful I’ve ever seen her.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is a red carpet regular who will never be accused of donning something boring. Her printed sapphire Dries Van Noten was a breath of fresh air in a sea of largely bland gowns. I hadn’t truly appreciated Maggie’s seemingly effortless sense of style until this awards season, but now I finally get what all the hype is about.

Meryl Streep, who’s probably walked more red carpets than the other 4 ladies combined, was the epitome of class and elegance in a white Chris March gown that suited her absolutely perfectly. From her chic ‘do all the way down to her Jimmy Choos, Meryl let it be known that 60-year olds can kill the red carpet too. I can only hope to look half as good as Meryl when I’m that age.

And with that, this year’s awards season draws to a close. Till next year!

Golden Globes Garb

Awards season is one of my most favourite times of the year, so I’ve been a bit disappointed with the slow start we’ve had this season style-wise. The ensembles at the People’s Choice Awards were completely mundane, and I was left rather uninspired by the Golden Globes the as well.

I wasn’t going to bother with a post about Golden Globes fashion until I read André Leon Talley’s Globes review, which was infused with good and bad fashion and a whole lot of ALT wit. It reminded me that though over 200 gowns sashayed down the red carpet and were largely very blah, there were still a few standouts worth highlighting.

Zoe Saldana’s romantic Louis Vuitton confection was the perfect shade of berry. She seems to be on a roll.

I needed a few days to digest Maggie Gyllenhaal’s RM by Roland Mouret gown. I loved the unexpected colour, the origami pleating and just how beautifully Maggie carried herself in the dress. I wasn’t so much of a fan of the mermaid silhouette, but I got over it.

I also debated January Jones’ look. Black seems like such an unexciting choice of colour when the whole spectrum is at your disposal, but her Lanvin gown has a sense of drama that’s only magnified by its colour. The headband I could do without though.

Grey is not really a colour you choose if you want to shine on the red carpet, but Sofia Vergara’s very unexpected Carolina Herrera just works.

Emily Blunt’s Dolce & Gabbana gown was a safe choice, but gorgeous nonetheless and it was styled with perfection.

Next stop: the SAG Awards this weekend and the Grammys the following week!

It seems so fitting that Zoe Saldana wore Jason Wu to the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards; they both had such breakthrough years in 2009 and there seems to be no signs of either of them slowing down. Zoe looks absolutely stunning in this ethereal Wu creation and crazy fierce Louboutins. I want the whole ensemble!
