Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace Spring 2014
Cue shocking confession: we didn’t watch the Oscars red carpet coverage last night, not even a minute. The shock! The horror! We weren’t missing the posse of Ryan Seacrest and company in the slightest, but we weren’t feeling quite like ourselves until we’d fully caught up on all the action via the interweb and had created a 10 best dressed list like we always do. This year, though, we took some liberties: instead of limiting the list to the Academy Awards themselves, we also considered looks from Vanity Fair and Elton John’s respective Oscar parties.
The result? Kate Hudson in a dazzling caped Atelier Versace gown won the sartorial Oscar race in our books, but Diane Kruger in lace Valentino and Karolina Kurkova and Evan Rachel Wood, both stunning in Elie Saab, took home top style honours for the evening. The rest of our list is rather predictable but well deserved: Angelina Jolie in yet another gorgeous Elie Saab, Lupita Nyong’o in powder blue Prada, Anne Hathaway in sleek Gucci, and more.
Check out our complete top 10 best dressed from Oscars night below. Did we miss any of your favourites?

Lily of Bleed For Fashion donned a lovely bright red tulle skirt to celebrate Valentine’s Day in last week’s edition of The Canadian Street Style Lookbook, and we were enamoured. Styled to perfection, it was a very girly girl skirt tempered by a Kenzo tiger sweatshirt in the same hue.
Want to get the look? So do we, so a new skirt or two is obviously in order. Tulle, florals, lace – check out 10 of the girliest skirts on the market right now in the gallery below.
It’s been mere days since the Spring 2014 haute couture collections were unveiled in Paris, and many of the stunning looks have already made red carpet appearances. Rihanna rocked an uber-sexy gown by Alexandre Vauthier to Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party, Lady Gaga chose a beautiful Alexis Mabille design for the 2014 MusiCares Person Of The Year event, Rita Ora donned an embellished shirt dress also by Vauthier to the Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch, and Katy Perry sported not one but two exquisite Valentinos to the Grammy awards show.
Next stop? The BAFTAs, the Oscars, and an endless stream of entertainment industry events with ‘haute couture’ as the dress code scheduled for the coming months. We can’t say for sure what other designs from couture week will be hitting the red carpets, but we’ve rounded up 25 of the most gorgeous gowns from the Spring 2014 collections for your previewing pleasure. We can’t wait to spy the likes of Cate Blanchett, Lupita N’yongo and Jennifer Lawrence in these stunning looks.

Beyonce in Michael Costello
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles last night, and we were glued to our televisions from red carpet coverage to closing performance. There were plenty of highlights, on stage (Daft Punk! Pharrell!) and off, sartorial (Valentino! Gucci!) or otherwise.
Beyonce may not have taken any Grammys home, but she won the whole night by our measure, with a fierce performance to open the show and best dressed honours to boot. Queen Bey followed up the bodysuit she wore to perform “Drunk In Love” with Jay-Z with a gorgeous white gown by Project Runway alumnus Michael Costello, who we totally cheered for during Season 8. Biggest moment of his career to date, definitely.
In other, non-Bey news, Ciara and her baby bump rocked the red carpet in a very chic custom Emilio Pucci, and Katy Perry made our jaws drop in exquisite, fresh-off-the-runway Valentino couture. Our obsession with tuxedos was reignited thanks to Madonna‘s dapper Ralph Lauren getup, and Gucci Première continued to knock our socks off this awards season with a stunning metallic number donned by Taylor Swift.
That rounds out our top 5 best dressed from the 2014 Grammys. Who was on your list?

From awards shows to film festivals to fashion fetes, 2013 has been quite a year on the red carpets. With 365 days worth of drop-dead gorgeous looks to choose from, selecting a short list of the 10 best dressed of the year actually turned out to be an easier task than we anticipated. That’s just how fabulous the 10 looks that made our list really were.
Repeat winners like Rooney Mara and Diane Kruger continued to bring their A games in 2013, making our list two years in a row. The rest of the list was rounded out by established stars like Cate Blanchett and Marion Cotillard, future hall-of-famers Jessica Chastain and Kerry Washington, newcomers like Lupita Nyongo and Shu Qui, and surprise contender Rihanna.
Are you in as much awe as we are over these 10 best dressed ladies and their stunning looks, or did we miss some of your favourites from the year?

Ever since we laid eyes on Nelia of Style Blog‘s croc-embossed leather skirt, we’ve been fighting the urge to steal it from her. What’s a leather skirt or two between friends? But rather than burglarize her closet, we instead decided to focus our energies on finding a stunning leather skirt all our own…legally.
What we found was 33 gorgeous reasons not to have to deprive Nelia of hers, and we’ve been daydreaming about them ever since. Between Givenchy‘s curved hem leather pencil skirt, Cedric Charlier‘s asymmetrical sheepskin skirt, and Lover‘s lace trim leather skirt, we’re sufficiently distracted enough to leave Nelia and her skirt alone. For now.

We here at The Backseat Stylers live for fall fashion. One of the biggest reasons? The ankle bootie. It’s by far our favourite shoe silhouette, and we were reminded of our love for them when we spied Krystin of Suburban Faux Pas (featured in last week’s edition of The Canadian Street Style Lookbook) sporting a pair of high-heeled, leopard print beauties. Now we’re digging all of ours out of the closet, but – like any good shoeaholic – are longing for a new pair to add to the fall rotation.
We searched high and low for a pair worthy of splurging on, and found ourselves head over heels in love with a whopping 20 gorgeous styles. Between the adorable, bow-adorned Christian Louboutin ‘Autonodo’, the ladylike ‘Pamla’ booties by Enzo Angiolini, and the incredibly fierce ‘Kim’ metallic lace-ups by Gucci, we’re having a rather tough time settling on just one pair…or even two. We dare you to try.

The Toronto International Film Festival officially wrapped up yesterday; the red carpets have been rolled up and the celebrities have returned to Hollywood, but we’re still riding that high that only the film festival can bring. We’re going to miss our favourite actresses walking the streets of Toronto in haute couture frocks, but awards season will be here before we know it.
In the meantime, we’ve rounded up our 10 favourite red carpet looks of TIFF 2013 to help with the withdrawal. From Julia Roberts in a gorgeous red Dolce & Gabbana number to Dakota Fanning in a jaw-dropping Atelier Versace gown, this year’s crop of stars brought their sartorial A games, making for the most fabulous Festival to date.

As far as bold, statement-making pieces go, jewelry and shoes get most of the play around here, but when we spotted Marla of Trend Struck sporting a lovely feather mini last week, we knew the next hero piece to join our wardrobe rotation would be a skirt.
We scoured the internet for the most gorgeous skirts the fall collections have to offer, and were stunned by the sheer number of to-die-for options. From minis to maxis and everything in between, we found 16 skirts guaranteed to make your (and your date’s) heart skip a beat.
On the pocketbook-friendly end of the spectrum we discovered ASOS‘s lace pencil skirt with floral appliqué ($71) and Topshop‘s holographic A-line mini (£38), while on the designer end of the spectrum, we’re daydreaming about the magenta silk-satin maxi by Balmain (USD$5,865) and draped lamé pencil skirt by Giambattista Valli (USD$3,565).
Check out the gallery below for our 16 favourite statement skirts right now, and get those gams ready.
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture Fall 2012
Just one last TIFF 2012 post, I promise! I couldn’t let the film festival pass us by without bowing down to the most memorable looks from the past 10 days. Jennifer Lawrence in a Dior haute couture dress and sleek dark ‘do easily took the title of best dressed for me, but it was a close race for second place.
Lily Collins and Diane Kruger stunned in embellished short numbers by Balmain and Valentino respectively, while Keira Knightley and Rachel McAdams both chose beautiful Elie Saab gowns. Which TIFF red carpet look was your favourite?
