Parlez-Vous Fashion?

Dropping by the Backseat: Fashion and Still Life Stylist Tricia Hall

The first time I ever encountered fashion and still life stylist Tricia Hall, she was working her magic backstage at a VAWK fashion show, and I was stalking her with my camera. I’ve since witnessed her at work numerous times – and even had the pleasure of being styled by her once – but I’m still as fascinated as ever by her and the incredible work that she does. And if you aren’t already as well, I have a feeling you will be too – read on.

How did you get your start in the fashion industry?

My background is in fashion design; I have a diploma from George Brown. Before that I was doing a lot of visual display, window display and in-store merchandising, for stores like Gap, Jacob and Bootlegger.

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

It would have to be the first time I worked with [Toronto and Montreal-based fashion photographers] Lily & Lilac and [our editorial Indian Summer] got picked up in Strut Magazine. It was a submission, [and] I was so confident that the story was going to be picked up. I was so brazen: I pulled some great designers from great stores, and I told them, “Yes, we’re doing this for Strut Magazine,” because I just believed that it was going to be picked up by Strut. And it was! To this day, it’s a favourite editorial any time I show my book to clients, [and] my agent loves it. It’s always in my portfolio, and [it] was from 5 years ago.

Between the different types of styling that you do (editorial, still life), which do you prefer?

Editorial is definitely more fun, because it allows [me] to create and collaborate with all these creative minds. It’s like another art form to me. People have their paintings, expressing with brushes and strokes, and different mediums like oil and watercolour. For me, it’s playing with textures and layers and incorporating hair and make-up to create this picture, work of art.

What’s the best part of your job?

I like always working with new people, models, photographers, clients. I can get very restless if I’m doing the same thing over and over, so I definitely love the variety. Never the same thing twice in my job.

If you were throwing a fashionable dance party, who would your three guests-of-honour be?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, [because they’re] cool, low-key type of people. I’m very low-key. Alexa Chung would be interesting too. I find her style down-to-earth and unpretentious, even though she’s always decked in designer duds. Maybe it’s because she comes across that way as a person. [Fashion editor of Wonderland Magazine] Julia Sarr-Jamois – she definitely inspires me. Her style is uncomplicated but interesting. It never looks too contrived. I also love her hair. She has awesome hair.

What’s one item in your closet you just can’t live without?

Definitely jeans. I require two different sets. I have one that I only wear for work, because when you’re doing still-life styling sometimes you’re building stuff on the ground [and] on your hands and knees, so they get worn out. And then I have my dressier ones for going out.

Tell us about a fashion faux pas you’ve committed.

Hammer pants. [They were] so awful, I don’t know what I was thinking. It was when MC Hammer was popular, in 8th grade. There was a lot of fabric and they looked especially unattractive when the wind was blowing towards you.  They were just terrible. Now that I’m older and wiser, I don’t really take on any fashion trends that I would regret down the line. As of late, I can’t look back at anything and think, “OMG, I can’t believe I wore that!”

Where is your favourite place to shop?

I’m a very big online shopper. The Outnet…and Shopbop mainly for accessories like shoes and jewelry, and even Net-a-porter on occasion. Gap’s been stepping up their game, really paying attention to the denim, so I’ve been wearing a lot of Gap lately and shopping online.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

I’m very much a lone wolf. I love going to the movies by myself, much to my husband’s dismay, if it’s something he wants to see too. I really love that alone time.

What’s one item on your bucket list?

Travelling more. I would love to go to London, Paris, Italy. Not necessarily fashion-driven, but beauty-driven: the architecture, the culture. I would even love to explore more of Canada. I think it would be a shame to die and not have explored more of this land I call home.

Do you sing in the shower?

No, I’m usually lost in thoughts. Too busy for singing!

OBJECT by George Antonopoulos for Danier Fall 2011 Collection Launch

Kimberly Lyn, George Antonopoulos, Nelia Belkova, me, Tricia Campbell-Hall

All summer I counted down the days until the OBJECT for Danier Fall 2011 collection would hit sales floors, and last week the long wait finally came to an end. Toronto-based stylist George Antonopoulos‘ inaugural collection for the Canadian leather retailer launched with a trunk show at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre store on September 7th.

Canadian fashion heavyweights like FASHION‘s Editor-in-Chief Bernadette Morra, Zoomer Magazine‘s Editor-in-Chief Suzanne Boyd and Toronto Star‘s Derick Chetty, stylists, fashion bloggers and fans descended on Danier’s Yorkdale location to be the first to shop the lush collection of leather separates, dresses and outerwear. With constant line-ups at the changing rooms and registers, much of the stock on hand was snapped right up that evening.

Yours truly was lucky to be able to snag two fierce pieces, the leather henley shirt and mini dress (pictured below). Can’t wait to take them out for a spin! Check out the full Fall lookbook here, and be sure to stop by your local Danier store before the collection sells out.

As for what’s next, Antonopoulous has already been dropping hints about his Spring 2012 outing for Danier. “There’s lots of colour,” he revealed, to our utter excitement. And footwear, too! Knowing how covetable the first OBJECT collection is, we’re dying to see what Antonopoulos has up his sleeve for his second. Time to start replenishing my OBJECT fund in preparation for Spring!

Topman Summer Takeover at the Bay Toronto

Topshop continues to reign supreme at the Bay‘s Toronto flagship this summer! After the takeover of the 3rd floor by a potentially (socially) deadly combination of mojitos and a photo booth (remember these silly shots?) earlier this month, the Bay did it all over again this week in honour of the Topman pop-up shop on the 2nd floor. The city’s hipster men came out in full force to buy orange shoes, hit up the photo booth and play some ping pong.

Missed the fun? Don’t fret. Stop by the Bay Queen Street for your Topman (or Topshop) fix before summer’s end, or the Bay Yorkdale starting October 5th!

Proenza Schouler Designers Charm at The Room at the Bay in Toronto

Blogger Kimberly Lyn, Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, blogger Nelia Belkova and me

Last night, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the designers behind womenswear and accessories label Proenza Schouler, dropped by for a visit at The Room at the Bay in Toronto and charmed the pants off the city’s fashion set. Bringing with them pieces from their Fall 2011 collection, the duo made the 200+ crowd swoon with their obvious design talent and – let’s face it – boyish good looks and down-to-earth charm. Most of us present, including yours truly, were reduced to schoolgirls with crushes.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jack and Lazaro, and wish I could tell you that there was witty banter or intelligent debate. Unfortunately, all I can recall of my starstruck moment was a cheery “Welcome to Toronto!” on my part, some discussion around how gorgeous and comfortable Nelia Belkova’s Proenza shoes are, and a hurried group photo session snuck in before the rest of the partygoers lost patience. There was the shaking of hands too and, needless to say, I haven’t washed my right hand since. I kid, of course.

Boyband-like appeal aside, the designers’ Spring and Fall 2011 collections were intriguing in their own right. There were PS1 bags galore, but what stole this fan’s heart was a certain printed neon yellow top, spotted on a lucky mannequin, and the matching tweed skirt on The Room’s Megan Loach. Proenza or not though, reception attendees showed up in their surprisingly colourful Tuesday best, taking full advantage of the city’s scorching temperatures (finally!) to don their couped-up summer fare, with Liz Cabral’s Prada SS10 printed beach scene skirt and Suzanne Rogers’ Rodarte SS11 Ming print dress leading the charge.

As for me, I deemed my Proenza Schouler Fall 2011 pieces entirely too warm for the 40-degree weather and settled for a 3.1 Phillip Lim dress and silver patent Louboutins to match. I don’t think Lazaro and Jack minded though – there were far too many usually too-cool-for-Schoul fashion folks fawning over them for them to notice anyway.

“When Tommy Met Anna”: Tommy Ton & Anna Dello Russo Feted at The Room at the Bay in Toronto

Me and Vogue Nippon Editor-at-Large Anna Dello Russo

The Room at the Bay announced recently that they would be hosting “When Tommy Met Anna”, an exhibit of photographs of Vogue Nippon Editor-at-Large and street style heroine Anna Dello Russo by Toronto-based, world-renowned street style photographer Tommy Ton. When the news first broke, the first question on mine and most other lips in the city was, “Does that mean ADR is coming to Toronto?!” When confirmation came via a tweet from The Hudson’s Bay Company that, indeed, the inimitable Dello Russo would be gracing our city with her perennially overdressed presence, the excitement in the Toronto fashion community’s little corner of the Twitterverse was palpable. Not only was ADR coming to town, but she was also bringing with her a fabulous excuse for The Room at the Bay to break out the fancy schmancy hors d’oeuvres and bottles of champagne again. In the year and a half since The Room was relaunched, it’s garnered quite the reputation for throwing some of the best industry shindigs around (see here, here and here for the evidence).

ADR in a Giles Deacon Spring 2011 bandage print dress and Brian Atwood pumps with a gaggle of her biggest fans

Of course, delicious mini burgers and open-bar aside, the evening was about Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton, and boy was it ever. True to what we’ve come to expect of Dello Russo and her multiple outfit changes during each day of Fashion Month, the guest of honour kicked off the evening in a lovely pink bandage print Giles Deacon dress and matching Brian Atwood pumps, and then slipped away briefly at one point to don a new ensemble, returning in the standout yellow and blue lampshade dress from Mary Katrantzou’s Spring 2011 runway show. Not to be outdone, Ton kept up with a mid-party outfit swap of his own. This man, who brings us images of the most fabulous footwear from the streets of the world’s fashion capitals, has serious shoe game himself.

Toronto’s fashion set also did not disappoint, showing up at The Room’s invite-only soiree in amped up getups clearly inspired by ADR’s own outrageous looks over the past few years. There was colour, bling, and a sense of sartorial adventure in the air. The Room looked its best too, with over-sized street style snaps of Dello Russo by Ton, new Spring 2011 designer arrivals and inspired visual displays galore. The Bay demonstrated once again that they know how to throw a party, which was abundantly clear when, as the evening drew to a close, I spotted the guests of honour grooving with guests on the makeshift dance floor - Dello Russo in the DJ booth and Ton posing with the most glammed out transvestite I’ve ever laid eyes on. In a word? Epic.
