Stylin’ from the Backseat: Doe, A Deer

The talented Jenna Marie Wakani shot this photo of S outside the WMCFW tents last week for Elle Canada, capturing her nod to one of our favourite Canadian designers, Sunny Fong of VAWK. Along with the snap came some fun interview questions, which we thought we’d share here in case you missed the post on ellecanada.com.

Fave piece: ”My VAWK deer shirt—it’s a one-of-a-kind runway sample!”

TFW Spring 2015 highlight: “The Mercedes-Benz Start-Up finale—what a great platform for emerging talent! These are the designers who are going to shape the Canadian fashion landscape in the coming years.”

Star gazing: ”Stacey McKenzie is hands down my fave front row fixture. Her look is always on point and she has an infectious enthusiasm for Canadian fashion.”

Top Canadian model: ”It’s a tie between Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha. Don’t make me choose!”

Most cherished fashion piece: ”My whimsical Charlotte Olympia x Olympia Le-Tan Charlotte’s Web book clutch. It was my favourite book growing up.”

Top Spring 2015 trend: ”Jumpsuits. I can’t get enough of them!”

Are you loyal fans of VAWK, Coco and jumpsuits too?

Look Who Got #RedkenReady With Us at WMCFW + WIN a $250 Redken Prize Pack!

The weather during World Mastercard Fashion Week was tough on our hair games. Our ‘dos were suffering the wrath of Mother Nature and her torrential downpours for most of fashion week, and we weren’t the only ones. Thank goodness we’ve got new friends in high places, namely Redken Canada, official hair sponsor of WMCFW. On Day 2 of fashion week, we teamed up with the incredibly talented Redken team to get attendees #RedkenReady – one spray of dry shampoo at a time! – outside the tents and in the rain, no less.

Industry insiders like bloggers Nelia Belkova and Hawley Dunbar, Elle Canada Associate Editor Charlotte Herrold, fashion writer Anya Georgijevic and more all happily took us up on our offers of hair touch-ups courtesy of Redken Canada. A few spritzes of Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist for added shine or some strategic sprays of Pillow Proof Blow Dry Two Day Extender to re-lift the locks got fashion week goers #RedkenReady just before stepping in front of the lens of street style photographers or into the tents for the shows.

We had such a blast playing hair fairy godmothers! We met so many fabulous people outside the tents that day and learned lots of valuable tips and tricks from the Redken team. Missed out on the fun? Don’t fret – we’re giving away a $250 personalized Redken hair care prize pack to one lucky reader of The Backseat Stylers! Contest rules are below. Good luck, ladies and gents!

Nelia donned a bright white faux fur jacket that was the perfect contrast to her new platinum locks.

Spotted from the Backseat: Operanation 2014 Edition

On October 16, the Canadian Opera Company hosted its annual fundraiser, Operanation, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Operanation: Light Up The Night was a spectacular evening of music, food and fashion in support of the opera company’s Ensemble Studio, Canada’s premier training program for young opera professionals.

Co-chaired by Randi Bergman of Fashion MagazineAnne Maggisano of Burgundy Asset Management and Patrick Sambrook of Eggplant Entertainment, this year’s event had a modern Spanish flair, inspired by the COC’s production of The Barber of Seville. The highlight of the night was a much anticipated performance by the French band Yelle.

Guests went ultra glam for the occasion. Nelia Belkova looked red carpet-worthy in emerald green H&M, Gracie Carroll repped Canadian fashion fabulously in Greta Constantine, and Amy Burstyn-Fritz stunned in a standout orange gown. Check out the gallery below for style snaps from Operanation: Light Up The Night.

Peroni Celebrates Vogue Italia’s 50th Anniversary With Exhibition at Holt Renfrew

Vogue Italia is celebrating its milestone 50th anniversary this year, and Peroni decided that the perfect gift would be an exhibition in the magazine’s honour, right here in Toronto.

Titled ‘Peroni Nastro Azzurro Celebrates The Visionary World of Vogue Italia’, the exhibition provides a behind-the-scenes look at the incredibly talented roster of designers, models, film actors and more who have graced its pages or contributed to them, delving into the magazine’s video archives.

The story is told in moving images as never seen before. Miles Aldridge’s hypnotic shots in saturated colours; art by Vanessa Beecroft and Marina Abramović;  models such as Mariacarla Boscono and Eva Herzigova; icons of cinema including Quentin Tarantino and Michael Fassbender; cult designers such as Manolo Blahnik and Philip Treacy. Each gives a unique insight into what makes Vogue Italia a powerful force for Italian style.

Check out the gallery below for style snaps from the launch party, which was attended by the likes of Vogue Italia contributor Grazia D’Annuncio and designer Stella Jean. The must-see exhibition is housed at the Holt Renfrew Bloor Street flagship in Toronto until October 31. It is open to the public, and is also available online at vogue.it and peroniitaly.com.

Jimmy Choo Fêtes Opening of First Boutique in Canada

Jimmy Choo is on a roll of late: in August, the luxury brand opened the doors to its much anticipated first boutique in Canada, and then just this past week went through with a highly watched IPO. Busy as the footwear and accessories design house may be, they found time to celebrate their first Canadian boutique at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto recently.

Guests of honour Waris Ahluwalia and Mila Mulroney were joined by the city’s social set, including FASHION Editor-in-Chief Bernadette Morra, Cityline‘s Tracey Moore and Suits actress Meghan Markle, as they toasted the new boutique. The store reflects a new design concept being rolled out in expansion stores around the world, and will offer women’s and men’s shoes, handbags, sunglasses, small leather goods, and more.

Our favourite part of the new boutique, hands down, was the corner dedicated to the new made-to-order shoe service. The brand’s signature silhouettes, including the classic Anouk, Lance, Xenia and Tite styles, are available for customization for Choo fans looking for the bespoke experience. With a myriad of luxe materials and colours to choose from, we promised ourselves we’d return someday soon for a pair of personalized stilettos.

Haven’t yet had the chance to check out the fab new Jimmy Choo boutique yourself? Check out the gallery below for snaps from the launch party.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – October 17, 2014 Edition

Alanna Durkovich of Xander Vintage, Vancouver

This week’s Lookbook is all about fashion firsts.

Lisa was the first to rock a look from the highly anticipated Alexander Wang x H&M collaboration (#NBD), Sasha was the first to sport a piece from the 424 Fifth Fall collection we’ve been obsessing about for months, and Nelia was the first to ever make us consider going grey on purpose as she debuted her new platinum ‘do.

We may be hanging out in the backseat, but our favourite Canadian style bloggers sure aren’t – they’re right at the forefront of the scene.

Spotted from the Backseat: Hermès Men’s Universe Masculine Spirit Party

On October 7, over 600 of Toronto’s fashion set gathered at the Fermenting Cellar to fête Hermès Men’s Universe. Hermès menswear designer Véronique Nichanian, who has been in her post for an impressive 25+ years, flew in from Paris for the festivities.

Dubbed Masculine Spirit, the event featured eight installations and a presentation (with some very handsome models, we might add) showcasing the design house’s menswear collections, including highly covetable ready-to-wear, silks, watches, leather, shoes, and more. There was also a gif-creating photo booth with the brand’s scarves and leather accessories as props, a designer cocktail bar manned by one of New York’s finest mixologists, and one very busy dance floor; Hermès sure knows how to throw a party.

Guests definitely rose to the occasion, donning their Hermès silks in creative ways and breaking out the Birkins. Check out the gallery below for 38 style snaps from what may have been the party of the year.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – October 10, 2014 Edition

Lisa Dengler of Just Another Fashion Blog, Toronto/New York

One of the few reasons why we’re willing to accept the colder temperatures and increased frequency of rain that come with fall is the footwear. It’s prime time for prancing around in mensy loafers, brogues and oxfords, and we couldn’t be more delighted.

It turns out style bloggers across the country feel the same way. This week, Lisa sported a pair of to-die-for black and white loafers, Ania rocked a pair of edgy, pointy-toe lace-ups, and Krystin donned a pair of classic, tasseled beauties.

We’ll take a pair of each, please.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – October 3, 2014 Edition

Nelia Belkova of Style Blog, Toronto

Last week’s takeover of the Canadian style blogs by pretty dresses did not wane this week; ’tis the season, it seems.

This week, Liz sported the sweetest blue frock complete with bow and ruffles, Sonya paired a beautiful floral number with fierce leopard print pumps, and Nelia rocked an uber-cool printed Clover Canyon design (we’re obsessed).

Time to break out those dresses – special occasion not required.
