Amanda Salmon of Greta Constantine in a Primer tank top
One of my favourite Toronto boutiques, TNT, recently celebrated their 20th anniversary with a party fit for, well, Nicole Richie. The former Simple Life star (remember that show?) and designer of the House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate lines was on hand for the bash, though you’ll never know it from my photos; we were in the same room, but I managed to miss her entirely. Also in attendance were the evening’s host Dan Levy, the Greta Constantine team, there to launch their capsule collection Primer, and the three finalists from this year’s TFI New Labels competition, whose collections will be stocked at TNT this Fall. Toronto’s fashion set came out in droves for the shindig, and it was a night worthy of the store’s grand re-opening.
TNT was offering a 20% discount on purchases in exchange for donations in support of the Toronto Fashion Incubator, but there were too many partygoers and too little space for me and my friend J to get our shop on. I did notice that TNT is stepping up its designer game – I spied Matthew Williamson dresses and Miu Miu shoes in the mix – a sure sign that owners Arie Assaraf and Carrie Richmond are ready to compete with The Room at the Bay, Holt Renfrew and Intermix.
Since shopping was a no go, I focused on the fashionable crowd instead. From the coveted 3.1 Phillip Lim studded Edie bow bag to the FLARE Magazine x ALDO wedges, guests donned their most stylish duds in honour of one of Toronto’s most stylish shopping destinations.

Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong of Greta Constantine recently announced the launch of Primer, a capsule collection of easy-to-wear embellished tank tops and draped t-shirt dresses to much excitement. With price tags that are much more accessible than their ready-to-wear line, many fans will be able to purchase their very first Greta pieces. ”Our dream has always been to be a part of every woman’s wardrobe,” explains Pickersgill. “This collection offers us that very opportunity.”

Priced from $95 to $275, selected pieces were available for purchase at Toronto retailer TNT’s 20th anniversary bash last night, where guests – Nicole Richie among them – had the first peek at the collection. Being a huge fan of Greta Constantine’s main line, I was sure that I’d take full advantage of the opportunity, but didn’t – and it wasn’t for lack of trying. I fell hard for the safety pin skull tank and the draped dress with leather tie at the waist, but the indigo samples were just for show last night. For now they’ll reside on my wish list only, but they’ll be hitting my closet soon enough, I’m sure.

by The Backseat Stylers | July 16th, 2010 Not to worry – I’m alive and kicking.
I disappeared for a few days, because literally the whole city of Toronto is on sale. Hitting up The Room at the Bay’s 70% off sale, Holt Renfrew’s up to 60% off designer sale and TNT’s 70% off clearance sale takes time, my friends. Plus, Baby Backseat Styler is still a shopaholic-in-training, so he’s been slowing me down a bit. Nevertheless, I managed to snag the last few items on my Spring/Summer wishlist.

First up is this 3.1 Phillip Lim bow wrap cardigan. I’ve been trying to convince myself since seeing the runway show that this is a DIY project opportunity, but the fact of the matter is that I’m not a DIY person. And so I waited for Holt Renfrew to finally mark the sweater down to 6o% off before finally taking it home. I have a feeling it’ll be in the work rotation quite a bit this fall.

Two weeks ago I posted about my wondrous discovery of the 3.1 Phillip Lim hairpin lace skirt in ivory on sale at Holt Renfrew At the time, the black version of the skirt was also sitting on the sale rack, but I decided to be good and only took home the ivory. I’ve regretted it ever since and I decided to try my luck yesterday and see if the black might still be waiting for me to come back for it. Quite unexpectedly and miraculously, it was. How could I leave the poor thing behind a second time?

Truthfully, some items have been on the wishlist for so long that I’ve forgotten about them. That was the case with this 3.1 Phillip Lim croc sequinned dress I spotted in the Holt Renfrew window months and months ago, and only remembered when I spied it hanging rather lonesomely on the clearance rack at TNT yesterday. It wasn’t even remotely my size, but at 70% off and with a lovely seamstress capable of taking the dress in several sizes for me for a reasonable cost, I was sold!
You might have noticed a recurring theme here – an ever so slight obsession with all things by 3.1 Phillip Lim. I was like a kid in a candy store at the TNT clearance sale, trying on all sorts of Phillip Lim sale merchandise, whether it was my size or not…you know, just in case. Through an elimination process that required a call to my friend J – who talked me down from buying silver sequin shorts – I managed to limit myself to this draped tuxedo jacket with satin lapels in black. Menswear-inspired clothing with just a touch of feminine detailing makes me happy. Paying 70% less than the original retail price makes me even happier.

…and I am a Smythe addict. The proof is in the equestrian vest that somehow made its way from TNT to my closet the other day. It seems I have a weakness for Smythe. And especially Smythe on sale. I vowed to my friend J just last week that I was done with Smythe jackets now after amassing three in one season…but vests don’t count, right?

by The Backseat Stylers | December 4th, 2009 TNT’s Winter Sale has begun, with up to 50% off on fall/winter merchandise. That means I can no longer resist a trip to Yorkville to check out TNT as well as the Holt Renfrew Designer Sale. Now that’s efficient shopping.

Enjoying a generous discount on current season must-haves while simultaneously supporting a good cause? Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
