The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 29, 2013 Edition

Gracie Carroll of Gracie Carroll, Toronto

With two fashion weeks running simultaneously on opposite ends of the country last week, our favourite style bloggers gathered in Toronto and Vancouver to take in the Fall 2013 collections of Canada’s top fashion talents. They showed up to the tents in their sartorial best, donning standout pieces by homegrown designers.

Gracie and Alexander were both decked out in Canadian wares from head to toe. Alexander’s fierce get-up was all by Calgary native Caitlin Power, from the cobalt blue neoprene jacket to the green printed shirt to the leather pants. He even topped the ensemble off with a pair of blue ALDO sunglasses for that extra patriotic touch.

Gracie sported a coyote and suede coat by Chloé comme Parris that was beyond fabulous, styling it with a printed skirt also by the Toronto-based duo, a t-shirt by Montreal-based Mimi & Coco, a ruched leather clutch by Toronto’s Jenny Bird, and limited edition FLARE Magazine x ALDO shooties.

So many incredible pieces created in our home and native land – hats off to you, Gracie and Alexander, for representing!

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 22, 2013 Edition

Lena Antonacci of Quality Rivets, Montreal

Last week’s edition of the Street Style Lookbook included some killer black and white outfits, and this week Ania and Melissa continued the trend.

We also saw some bold floral prints that are a little different from what we’re used to seeing. Resembling a digitally produced collage, the multi-layered floral print on Lily’s peplum top captivates with its intense colours. Samantha’s printed blouse combines two not often paired colours – pink and lime green – for a funky look with a fun ‘60s vibe. Lisa, opting for a more subdued look at Paris Fashion Week, had her printed blazer provide a punch of colour to her casual chic ensemble.

When Toronto Met Roksanda: A Peek Inside the Roksanda Ilincic Fête at The Room at The Bay

Yours truly with Roksanda Ilincic

Roksanda Ilincic made a one-day jaunt to Toronto last week for a fête in her honour at The Room at The Bay. The Serbian-born, London-based womenswear designer brought with her a charming disposition and highly covetable Fall 2013 collection that both won over the city’s fashion set.

Not that she didn’t already have big fans here. Socialite Stacey Kimel, blogger Nelia Belkova and Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fashion Director Suzanne Timmins were all decked out in Ilincic’s unmistakably chic and colourful wares at the invite-only cocktail party. The statuesque designer herself chose a whimsical printed pink gown for the occasion, a design from the Fall runway collection that just debuted in London last month.

Those of us without the pleasure of Ilincic pieces in our closets (yet!) still showed up in our Thursday best: Jenna Naumovich sported the to-die-for, limited edition Giuseppe Zanotti for Kanye West ‘Cruel Summer’ heels, while Jessica Chiu donned a printed Prabal Gurung frock that made our hearts go pitter-patter. Yours truly decided on a LRD by another London-based designer, Mary Katrantzou, while T wore a patterned velvet blazer by Club Monaco.

Merely a day after The Room’s latest shindig, while we were still basking in the glow of meeting the lovely Roksanda, came news of the next: a month from now, on April 16, featuring Viktor & Rolf. Mark your calendars!

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 15, 2013 Edition

Ania Boniecka of Ania.B, Victoria

I recently happened across a declaration that black and white was going to be a huge trend for spring, and it appears that our favourite Canadian style bloggers all received that memo and decided to get on that trend, stat.

What’s black, white and striped all over? Samantha, obviously. The Beckerman sister’s cotton candy-hued hair added a pop of colour to her jailhouse chic getup this week. Jen‘s black-and-white ensemble combined many of our favourite things: prints, leather and fur, the ingredients to the perfect cold weather outfit.

Stephanie‘s take on the trend was more white with a dash of black; her no-fail white blazer + white pants + striped top combo is a promising sign that spring is just around the corner. I hope.

Spotted from the Backseat: Canadian Stage Theatre Ball 2013 Edition

Megan Loach and Tracy Briggs

Canadian Stage hosted its annual fundraising gala, Theatre Ball, in Toronto last week in celebration of its 25th anniversary. With CTV’s Seamus O’Regan serving as master of ceremonies and the guest list including the likes of actor Jason Priestley and actress/comedian Caroline Rhea, the black tie soirée raised over $300,000 in support of Canadian Stage’s artistic programming, development activities and education and youth initiatives.

Many of the city’s most fashionable descended on The Carlu for the dinner, live auction, and opportunity to schmooze with Priestley, former Beverly Hills 90210 star and childhood crush of mine. Knot PR’s Amy Burstyn-Fritz showed up in a printed Mary Katrantzou frock, The Bay’s Megan Loach donned a turquoise Emanuel Ungaro gown, and FASHION Magazine‘s Randi Bergman chose a cheeky Margiela at H&M ensemble for the occasion.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 8, 2013 Edition

Anik Lacasse-Richard of Montreal In Style, Montreal

I am always impressed when someone can pull off an animal print – mainly because I can’t do it myself. Is it because I’m an introvert? A lover of colour blocking? A boring person? Hard to say.

This week, we spotted style bloggers across Canada sporting animal prints, and needless to say, they all looked fabulous! From the rock ‘n’ roll vibes of Gracie and Anik to Sydney’s polished look, there’s no doubt that animal prints can make any outfit that much more fun.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 1, 2013 Edition

Cara McLeay of A Fashion Love Affair, Vancouver

Who knew black leather could be so versatile?

This week, Libby – accompanied by the equally well-dressed Kate – looked super chic for a friend’s birthday in a black dress (or skirt?) with a perfectly fitted leather top. Vanessa, who it seems is never not wearing leather, paired her leather pants with an eye-catching flame-print shirt, while Liz braved the cold in a cute skirt.

Finally, one cannot speak of black leather without mentioning biker jackets. Ania wore hers over a minimalist black and white ensemble, providing a nice contrast to the pretty pastels on Lily.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – February 22, 2013 Edition

Julia Monson for Lookbook.nu, Toronto

If, like us, you’ve been shying away from the printed pant trend, it’s probably about time you get on board. According to some of our favourite Canadian style bloggers, patterned pants are going nowhere fast.

This week, Krystin sported a teal animal print pair with just the right amount of sheen, Ivy donned a green pair that contrasted perfectly against her sunny yellow jacket, and Nelia chose a black-and-white striped pair she fondly calls her ‘Beetlejuice pants’. In fact, Nelia confesses to owning 20+ pairs of “crazy pants” – now that’s dedication.

Are you a printed pant hoarder like Nelia, or a neophyte like T and me?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – February 15, 2013 Edition

Ania Boniecka of Ania.B, Calgary

Not even a little snowstorm can slow our favourite Canadian style bloggers down. This week, it was all about the winter whites. Ania paired a lovely ivory dress with tough Doc Marten boots, while Liz sported a cozy-looking oatmeal sweater with jeans and an oversized plaid scarf in the colour of the season, oxblood.

The duo from Kastor & Pollux, Dani and Bianca, donned matching bright white and animal print ensembles for NYFW, which begs a very important question: why do we at The Backseat Stylers never match our outfits? Definitely something to think about.

Spotted from the Backseat: The Book Lover’s Ball 2013 Edition

Knot PR’s Amy Burstyn-Fritz and author Helen Burstyn

On February 7, over 600 of Canada’s most avid readers and top literary talent gathered at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto for the 8th annual The Book Lover’s Ball. The likes of Conrad Black, Jian Ghomeshi and actress Sonja Smits turned out for the black tie gala in support of the Toronto Public Library. Hosted by Cityline‘s Tracy Moore, the evening featured a gourmet dinner, the requisite silent and (almost, in this case) live auctions, and post-dinner entertainment inspired by Canadian novels.

Between chatting about things that go bump in the night with psychological thriller author Jennifer Hillier and taking in mini fashion shows featuring designs by Lucian Matis and Starkers Corsetry, we left the event photography to the pros this time around. George Pimentel snapped the lovely Melissa Fishman in an embellished blush gown, one of our gala style favourites Elly Barlin-Daniels in a sleek black number, and the stunning duo of Amy Burstyn-Fritz and her mother and author Helen Burstyn also in their black tie best.
