Stylin’ from the Backseat: Queen’s Plate 2014

We love getting all gussied up for big events here at The Backseat Stylers, and there’s no bigger occasion for us this summer than last week’s Queen’s Plate. On a day when the dress code called for fancy fascinators and chic frocks, our philosophy was simple: go big or go home.

Literally, it seems, which explains S’s predilection for extremely oversized headpieces. She got a taste for large hats at our first Queen’s Plate last year, and would’ve had a tough time topping that sartorial outing if not for the incredibly talented David Dunkley, official milliner of the Queen’s Plate and purveyor of the gorgeous (and ginormous!) floral headpiece S sported. T, on the other hand, went for a more understated fascinator, opting instead to make a bold statement with her eye-catching metallic candy wrapper clutch and reflective sunglasses.

Both of us donned black and white with pops of metallic silver; save for the giant blue flowers atop S’s head, of course. S’s floral-on-floral getup was a nod to favourite Mary Katrantzou, while T repped Canadian in a dramatic VAWK vest. Our looks complemented each other rather nicely, though admittedly accidentally.

With yet another set of tastefully over-the-top Queen’s Plate ensembles under our belts, our #QP15 garb will have to be even bigger and bolder. Thank goodness we have a year to prepare ourselves.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – July 11, 2014 Edition

Assa Cisse of My Curves & Curls, Toronto

What better time to have some fun with fashion than when you’re not cocooned in a heavy parka? This week, Canadian style bloggers took advantage of the balmy weather to add some flare to their outfits.

Alanna sported a sherbet-hued matched set (with co-ordinated shoes to boot!), Assa rocked the oversized ruffle with an off-shoulder look, and Ania donned some snake print and the requisite cowgirl hat for Calgary Stampede festivities.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – July 4, 2014 Edition

Sonya Esman of Class Is Internal, Toronto

This week, we’re all obsessed with head-to-toe white looks, thanks to Sonya here in Toronto and Claire over in Vancouver.

Sonya sported a lovely crochet lace frock that had us instantly clicking to snag our very own, while Claire’s effortlessly chic white separates and matching shoes had a similar effect on us (i.e. wear to buy a pair of white sandals, stat?).

Are you rocking the summer whites too, or are you weary of spilling your ice cream on your bright white duds?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 20, 2014 Edition

Jackline A. of Sincerely Miss J, Toronto

This Saturday’s Summer Solstice marks the longest day of 2014. For style bloggers across the country that means more hours in the day to get their style snaps in – and they’ve definitely been taking advantage of the sun’s extended hours over the past week.

From Jackline and Krystin in lovely, ladylike frocks on the streets of Toronto to the Beckerman sisters in their typically delightfully outlandish looks on the MMVA’s red carpet, Canadian style bloggers officially welcomed the arrival of summer in very chic fashion.

Spotted from the Backseat: Mad Hot Ballet 2014 Edition

On June 11, The National Ballet of Canada hosted its annual fundraising gala Mad Hot Ballet: Spellbound at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. The fairy tale-inspired soirée featured awe-inspiring gala performances, a lively cocktail reception, and a dinner on the Four Seasons stage. Co-chaired by Vanessa and Mark Mulroney, the event raised over $1 million in support of The National Ballet of Canada.

Ballet dancers and ballet enthusiasts, it turns out, are one very stylish set. From Stacey McKenzie‘s jaw-droppingly gorgeous VAWK gown to Brittney Kuczynski‘s ridiculously fierce Mikael Kale dress, not only did partygoers attend in their Thursday best, but they also showed Canadian designers much love on the red carpet. Check out the gallery below for 22 style snaps from Mad Hot Ballet 2014 – you may even spot a mermaid dress, literally.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 13, 2014 Edition

Jill Lanksy of The August Diaries, Vancouver

This week in Canadian street style, it was all about statement dressing – no wallflowers here.

Jill paired a hard-to-miss bright yellow frock with a fierce pair of lace-up heels for a party-perfect look, Sonya brought the drama in a royal purple floral print dress and seasonless ankle booties, and Sasha knocked it out of the ballpark with a jaw-droppingly hot skirt suit that was anything but corporate and boring.

Spotted from the Backseat: Power Ball 2014 Edition

Renata Kaveh

On June 5, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto threw its annual fundraising bash, Power Ball: Old / New World, one of the year’s most anticipated art parties and definitely one of our favourite events on the city’s social calendar. Year after year, The Power Plant serves up an delightful mash-up of themed art installations, equally creative edible treats, and party-perfect beats. In turn, guests always respond with their most inspired art party getups, and this year was no exception.

From fashion photographer Renata Kaveh‘s jaw-droppingly gorgeous bronze gown (and Angelina Jolie-esque pose, natch) to Veronica Chail‘s ladylike, pearl-embellished frock by Toronto-based line NARCES, partygoers definitely brought their sartorial A games. Check out the gallery below for style snaps from Power Ball 2014, including writer Anya Georgijevic‘s envy-inducing ‘do, stylist Amarsana Gendunova‘s DIY lightbulb earrings and Biko Beauttah‘s pink and red fashion extravaganza.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Garden Party

On a recent visit to The Room at Hudson’s Bay in Vancouver, Charlotte Dellal, aka the creative genius behind accessories brand Charlotte Olympia, said, ”I love to design for women who dress from the feet up.” That certainly explains my ongoing obsession with all that Dellal does. Her line is an endless supply of gorgeous statement shoes I just can’t get enough of – and that definitely call for dressing from the feet up.

Take last week’s Power Ball ensemble, for example. I’ve had the most amazing Charlotte Olympia sandals sitting in my closet for some time now waiting for their first outing, destined to make their debut at one of Toronto’s biggest art parties of the year. Working from the bottom up, I paired the foliage print and sculpted heel sandals with my newly acquired 424 Fifth laser-cut pleather skirt and my favourite floral print Erdem top.

A match made in sartorial heaven? Quite possibly. Case made for dressing from the feet up? Most definitely.
