The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – September 28, 2012 Edition

Sydney Hoffman for Lookbook.nu, Toronto

This week, bold and clean cuts, such as Sydney’s elegant vintage (inspired?) coat with charming gold hardware and Joandy’s pencil skirt with cut out front, caught our eye as much as statement pieces, like Sydney’s brilliant two-tone green pants and Joandy’s Givenchy Rottweiler shirt, did.

S and I are planning to sprint to the nearest Joe Fresh to find Nelia’s gorgeous houndstooth blouse for ourselves. Hunting down must-have items is our favourite kind of exercise, and we’re thinking that Lily’s sweatshirt, loose-fit pants and Gucci heels might just be the perfect kind of outfit for such occasions.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – September 14, 2012 Edition

Samantha and Caillianne Beckerman of Beckerman Bite Plate, Toronto

It’s been quite the eventful week in fashion, and Canadian style bloggers have been spotted everywhere, decked out in the most fabulous prints, no less.

Anya sported a stunning floral printed blouse by Sandro at Fashion’s Night Out in Vancouver, while Jay looked BA (my friend – and perhaps only my friend – uses this acronym to mean “bad ass”) in Givenchy while in New York for fashion week.

At Toronto Life’s celebration of the city’s most stylish, Nelia paired a striking Clover Canyon tunic with a dazzling emerald statement necklace. Samantha, on a late-night ice cream run with twin Caillianne, was all about the prints too, and a fantastic new blue ‘do.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – August 31, 2012 Edition

Kira Paran of Northern Style Exposure, Edmonton

Every Thursday we click through a ridiculous number of style blog links in the hunt for our latest features for The Canadian Street Style Lookbook, and you know what? It’s like opening a box of chocolates…we just never know what we’re going to get. (Yes, we really did just make a tired Forrest Gump reference – it’s the Friday before a long weekend!).

Most weeks it’s the geniusly styled clothes that blow us away, sometimes the chic shoes, once even it was the gorgeous hair. This week, though, it was all about the accessories for us. Imagine Kira’s dress without the arm party; the look just wouldn’t be complete. Vanessa’s t-shirt without the animal-print bag – that wouldn’t be nearly as fierce. Or even M’c kenneth’s outfit sans the sunglasses; those babies take the ensemble to the next level.

What in your accessories drawer is giving your looks that extra bit of oomph?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – August 17, 2012 Edition

Kate Horsman of Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Vancouver

With Equipment-type blouses and peplum tops taking over our closets, we haven’t been giving our t-shirts as much love as they deserve lately. This week, Kate and Jay reminded us how a not-so-basic t-shirt just might be the statement piece our wardrobe is missing.

Kate paired her Givenchy angry dog tee with a maxi skirt, denim vest and, of course, her big dog Sarge. Fierce. We wouldn’t want to mess with Kate or Sarge. Jay, on the other hand, went whimsical, donning a Lanvin for H&M embellished t-shirt and matching (unembellished) shorts for an all-white, summer-perfect look.

Our t-shirt rotation is looking woefully inadequate, thanks to Jay and Kate. We’re now officially on the hunt for the perfect tee! Perhaps a fabulous printed Clover Canyon piece, à la Brooke?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 29, 2012 Edition

Ryan M. Cheung, Toronto (Image Credit: Stefania Yarhi for Textstyles)

I’m excited to announce that Jentine is the first person from Hamilton – where I live – to be included in The Canadian Street Style Lookbook! I live near the McMaster University campus, where the meaning of casual chic extends to wearing pajama pants in the middle of the afternoon, but Jentine is an example of the stylish Hamiltonians who focus more on the “chic” in casual chic. Her autumn-hued Marc Cain bustier crop top and thrifted Ralph Lauren cobalt skirt are a perfect pairing!

If the boys on campus dressed more like Ryan and the girls like Kelsey, I think I would be more interested in going to school. I’m completely envious of Ryan’s Ben Sherman gingham shirt and shoes, and love the vintage feel of Kelsey’s look. Her scalloped suede bottoms (Is it a skirt? A pair of shorts? Who knows!) are beautiful.

I imagine that my style will be similar to Alyssa’s look once I’ve become a successful professional in New York City, working in a contemporary art gallery and visiting my future friend Grace Coddington at the Vogue offices during my lunch breaks.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 8, 2012 Edition

Marta Tryshak of With Love Gabrielle, Toronto

This week’s edition of The Canadian Street Style Lookbook finds ladies dressed impeccably and suitably for a spectrum of intriguing scenarios.

It seems that Marta fittingly put together her outfit as if it were a deconstructed painting for her visit to the AGO exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris. Her white top and pants are a blank canvas that she’s transformed into a masterpiece with fun prints and punches of bold colour. Am I reading too much into Marta’s ensemble? Or is she the Picasso of Canadian street style?

Standing in front of what appears to be prison doors, Vanessa imparts a don’t-mess-with-me attitude in a white varsity jacket, sports bra, and black leather shorts with mesh trim. This is by far the best interpretation of the black-and-white bee-striped prison uniform I’ve seen to date.

The crystal ball in the background of Mina’s photo makes it painfully obvious that Professor Trelawny, professor of Divination at Hogwarts, was the source of inspiration for Mina’s look. Mina certainly looks magical with her perfectly-tied headband (executed with a spell, I assume), magnificent Prada sunglasses, and orange and gold statement earrings.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 1, 2012 Edition

Jay Strut of Jay Strut, Toronto

This week’s most exciting moments in Canadian street style involve champagne, cake, and cowboys and Indians. Intrigued? Read on!

Expertly juggling two phones and a glass of champagne in hand, Jay looked more like a star than most Hollywood celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival. His tuxedo jacket is nothing short of incredible, and its ivory colour do the shawl lapel and cuff buttons far more justice than black would. This million-dollar look is certainly an impressive change from when I last saw Jay in Rihanna-esque denim cut-off shorts, singing “CAKE CAKE CAKE…!” at an amazing RiRi-themed bachelorette party for Nelia.

Speaking of cake (I definitely didn’t bring up that Rihanna song just to make a smooth transition), Elizabeth’s bag conveys some great words of wisdom from Kate Spade: “Eat cake for breakfast.” This reminds me of that one time I ate two cupcakes for breakfast, immediately passed out from an overdose of sugar, and dreamt that Val Kilmer was my friend.

Sadly, there is no way to use “Speaking of Val Kilmer…” as a logical transition. Caillianne, whose outfit was inspired by cowboys and Indians, looks like she’s ready to take down anyone who gets in her way. But actually she wore this to her father’s birthday dinner.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 25, 2012 Edition

Gracie Carroll of Gracie Carroll, Toronto (Image Credit: Jillian Botting)

While the Victoria Day long weekend brought much-needed relaxation to Canadians, this week’s highlights in Canadian street style indicate that no vacation was taken from dressing fabulously.

Gracie’s monochromatic look is genius; the colour and length of the ensemble keep the layering of different textures light enough for spring. Ania’s restrained take on the neon trend – in the form of a yellow bra – is refreshingly different and elevates her casual chic look from moderately sexy to super sexy. Robyn manages to make white shorts seem like the best idea ever (an exceedingly challenging feat) by brilliantly combining them with a sheer mullet blouse and elegant blazer.
