We’re all about mixing high and low here at The Backseat Stylers, and this ensemble S sported during Toronto Fashion Week was the ultimate pairing of designer with mass market. The military-inspired peplum jacket by Prabal Gurung is one of our favourite fall wardrobe pieces, but a classic cincher belt by Banana Republic takes the look to a whole other level.
The belt, as luck would have it, was a recent chance discovery in a forgotten corner of S’s closet where it had sat untouched, tags still attached, for a few years. But with a jaunt on a TIFF black carpet and then a trip to fashion week so far this fall, it’s doing a great job making up for lost time.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art threw its annual Costume Institute Gala last night in New York, and we were there…err, in the same city on non-Met Ball business. But – silver lining! – we’re getting closer and closer every year to our dream of one day attending. We’d even happily accept the role of fly on the wall – are you hearing this Anna?
In any case, Met Ball 2014, ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’, happened last night, and it was the year’s most glamourous red carpet to date. All the biggest, boldest names in Hollywood were there, wearing the biggest, boldest names in the fashion industry: Blake Lively in Gucci Premiere, Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta, Beyonce in Givenchy Couture. Our best dressed list is packed with star power and sartorial perfection.
Side note: Hell hath officially frozen over. We once vowed never to post about one Kim Kardashian on this here site, but she won us over last night with a gorgeous midnight blue Lanvin gown and a Kanye West at her side. Vow or no vow, we give credit where credit is due, and Kim killed it this time. Now, back to our regular, generally Kim K.-free programming.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute held its annual gala last night. The dress code? Punk. And with New York and Hollywood’s boldest names attending, we knew their sartorial choices were going to be a feast for our fashion-obsessed eyes.
From a fabulously punk Sarah Jessica Parker in a printed Giles Deacon design and custom Philip Treacy mohawk headdress to a fabulous but not so punk Jennifer Lawrence in an embellished black Dior gown, the red carpet was quite the scene. Lauren Santo Domingo brought the drama in a Dolce & Gabbana dress with exaggerated sleeves, Emma Watson looked all grown up in a sexy black Prabal Gurung number, and Taylor Tomasi Hill stunned in a printed floral frock with spikes by Thom Browne.
It’s a tie for top honours, though, between a fierce Anja Rubik, who showed up in red leather Anthony Vaccarello, and Rooney Mara, who was a vision in white lace Givenchy (déjà vu?). Who were your favourites on this year’s Met Gala red carpet?

The Prabal Gurung for Target lookbook has landed! The collaboration between the discount department store chain and the New York-based designer, who counts Duchess Kate and Jennifer Lawrence among his fans, was announced last October and the complete collection has now finally been revealed.
Inspired by love, the 80-piece line-up includes ladies’ apparel, shoes, handbags and jewelry priced from $19.99 for a t-shirt to $199.99 for a leather jacket. The collection will hit Target stores and target.com on February 10, 2012, just in time for Valentine’s Day. It will be available through to March 23, 2013.
I’m definitely going to be needing some of those floral print pieces in my life. Target won’t have opened up shop in Canada yet (soon!), so I’ll be making the trek south of the border to get my hands on some Prabal Gurung x Target. Will you? Check out the 42-image gallery below to get started on your wish list.

Last week we wholeheartedly rejoiced when we found out that Prabal Gurung x Target was happening, even though the announcement was accompanied only by a rather low resolution image. We knew it was going to be good, and now it’s confirmed! We’ve got a sneak peek of two dresses from the collaboration, which will be featured in the ad campaign that was shot this past weekend. How cute are they?
Mark your calendars if you haven’t already: the line-up will be available in Target stores and target.com from February 10, 2012 to March 23, 2013.

Prabal Gurung for Target? Yes please! Target has announced its latest designer collaboration with none other than New York-based designer Prabal Gurung, who was recently worn by Duchess Kate. If he’s good enough for Kate, he’s certainly good enough for me – especially at Target price points!
The 80-piece Target x Prabal Gurung collection will include ladies’ apparel and accessories priced from $19.99 for a t-shirt to $199.99 for a leather jacket. There’s only one image to go on so far, but the colourfully printed pieces look downright lovely. The line-up will hit Target stores and target.com on February 10, 2012 and will be available through to March 23, 2013.
My calendar is officially marked and I’m already really, really excited. You?

Neiman Marcus, Target and the CFDA announced a rather unexpected but definitely very intriguing holiday collaboration this past July, and now the 50-plus piece collection of men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items has been revealed.
The offerings were designed by 24 CFDA designers, including: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.
The collection includes everything from Rodarte wrapping paper for $7.99 to Alice + Olivia bicycle for $499.99. I’m thinking a quick shopping jaunt south of the border might be required so I can get my hands on a Prabal Gurung bow cape ($79.99) for me, an Eddie Borgo letter opener ($34.99) for the Mister, and a Jason Wu polka dot dress ($59.99) for the daughter I’ve yet to have.
Mark your calendars – the collection will be available in both Neiman Marcus and Target stores and e-commerce sites (neimanmarcus.com ships to Canada!) starting December 1, and is sure to sell out in a flash. Check out the gallery below for the complete collection. What’s on your wish list?

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge attended a state dinner hosted by the President of Singapore tonight in quite possibly my favourite look of hers to date. Kate donned a gorgeous printed dress from Singaporean-born, New York-based Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 collection, and looked impeccable. This, my fellow Kate fans, is right up there with that blush sequin Jenny Packham, wouldn’t you say?
The Duchess’ choice is in line with her penchant for long-sleeved dresses, but the bold purple and ivory print is a lovely surprise. I was coveting this very dress all summer and never did end up getting my hands on it; seeing Kate step out in it is the next best thing I suppose. I have a proposition for you, Kate: sisterhood of the travelling dress?

By now we’re rather accustomed to hearing about unexpected collaborations (Valentino for GAP, anyone?), but Neiman Marcus x Target definitely takes the cake. The unlikely duo of retailers announced today the creation of a 50-plus piece collection of limited-edition men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items by a roster of 24 CFDA members.
The list of designers who have created pieces for the collection is impressive: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.
Due to hit both retailers’ stores and online shops on December 1, the collection is priced from $7.99 to $499.99, with the majority of items under $60. Not having yet seen a single item, this is already sounding like the collaboration of the year. Prabal? Proenza? Atwood, even? I can’t wait to see what some of my favourite designers have cooked up for Neiman Marcus and Target. Stay tuned!

Amanda Seyfried wore a gorgeous purple dress from Prabal Gurung‘s Spring 2012 collection a few months back, and I’ve been coveting everything from it ever since. I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d likely never be able to get my hands on some lovely purple goodness myself, but as the great Biebs once said, never say never. A few days ago, Gurung casually instagrammed the above photo (we lightened it a tad) with the following caption: “SP12 production fittings. Hope u guys luv these T shirts we r doing the 1st time as much as I do.”
That’s right, ladies and gents – Prabal Gurung t-shirts! That purple abstract print tee would be rather fun under a blazer or with my staple leather pants. I’m in, Prabal! Pending confirmation that the t-shirts will be priced within my snack bracket, of course.
