Admiring from the Backseat: Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2013 Edition

Rose Byrne in Lanvin

Because we’re not yet ready to let go of awards season and we have a feeling you aren’t either, we’ve going to dwell on Oscars Sunday just a little longer. We’ve gone ahead and rounded up our favourite after-party looks from the annual post-Oscars Vanity Fair soirée, and they’re just as glamourous as those on our best dressed list from the main event itself.

Red carpet regulars like Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth knocked it out of the sartorial ballpark once again in a ruffle and lace Givenchy number and embroidered Giambattista Valli frock respectively, while Amy Adams and Elizabeth Banks stunned in fringed Oscar de la Renta and printed Alexander McQueen.

Our hands-down favourite though was Rose Byrne, who served up possibly her best red carpet appearance ever, surprising us in a gorgeous white Lanvin getup. An incredible improvement over her horrendous SAG Awards outing!

Olivia Palermo Stars in the Oscar de la Renta x The Outnet Campaign

Oscar de la Renta‘s exclusive collection for The Outnet launches in only 6 days, and this sneak peek of Olivia Palermo’s ad campaign for the collaboration has us incredibly excited. On February 26, we’ll finally be able to add some ODLR to our closets at much more pocketbook-friendly prices than the designer’s wares usually retail for.

The 24-piece line-up features chic cocktail dresses and sophisticated separates that will retail from $325 to $1,295. I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on that tea party-ready floral frock! What do you have your eye on?

Oscar de la Renta Teams Up With The Outnet on Exclusive Collection

On this dreary Monday morning (here in Toronto, anyway), it seems that the shopping gods have finally heard our prayers for affordable Oscar de la Renta. The announcement comes today via WWD that the designer has created an exclusive collection for online discount designer retailer theoutnet.com. Launching on February 26, the 24-piece offering will retail from $325 to $1,295, much more pocketbook-friendly price tags than ODLR’s main line. Olivia Palermo will serve as the face of the limited edition collection.

“Currently, the brand’s outlet model is driven by surplus merchandise, and this marks the first time product has been actively developed for this channel of trade,” said Oscar de la Renta CEO Alex Bolen. “We have things around here that are underutilised – [such as] 40 years of patterns, fabrics and artwork that a lot of people spent time on. We thought, perhaps we can put something together in a way that is new, that doesn’t require as much development time and in an exclusive way.”

The line-up of red carpet-ready dresses and chic separates will be made using the same patterns, fabrics and factory as the main line. What a score for The Outnet – and us ODLR fans! “We know that our customer loves Oscar,” said The Outnet’s managing director Stephanie Phair, “but we also feel that this is an amazing opportunity to tap into The Outnet’s audience and a new audience that Oscar as a brand might not have reached yet”.

Finally, the chance to add some ODLR to the wardrobe! February 26 can’t come soon enough. We’ve got our eyes on those floral-print cocktail dresses, at the very least. What’s on your wish list?

Admiring from the Backseat: Screen Actors Guild Awards 2013 Edition

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2013

The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the second major stop of the 2013 awards season, was held last night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. We sat dutifully in front of our television watching the red carpet pre-show, almost threw said television out the window when our local channel aired an interior design reality competition rather than the first half hour of the SAGs, and then finally caught up on all the awards, fashion and awkward on-stage banter in time to bring you this post.

We were underwhelmed by the decidedly lacklustre red carpet (remember last year‘s fabulous looks from Emma, Michelle and Zoe?), but still managed to cobble together a tight list of our 5 best dressed of the evening. Anne Hathaway looked lovely in a fresh-off-the-runway Giambattista Valli frock, as did Jennifer Garner in a gold, embellished number by Oscar de la Renta. Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman sported their usual, glamourous fare, this time from Marchesa and Vivienne Westwood respectively, while Kerry Washington was the only leading lady to take a sartorial risk that we think paid off with an unexpected Rodarte design.

Did you catch the 2013 SAG Awards? Who made your best dressed list?

Admiring from the Backseat: American Music Awards 2012 Edition

Elisha Cuthbert

The 2012 American Music Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and though I missed them I obviously caught up on the red carpet fashion this morning. It wasn’t the Oscars, that’s for sure, but there were a few pleasant surprises – five, to be exact.

Elisha Cuthbert, who I now have a soft spot for ever since she donned that incredible VAWK dress, stunned in a glamourous gold column gown by Georges ChakraKerry Washington was a ray of sunshine in yellow lace Stella McCartney, Stacy Keibler showed off her gams in a Collette Dinnigan embellished mini, and red carpet favourite Ginnifer Goodwin was pretty in pale pink Oscar de la Renta.

Rounding out the top five was rapper Nicki Minaj - yes, you read right! – who looked the best I’ve ever seen her, unhinged facial expressions aside. She cleaned up nice in a bright coloured Monique Lhuillier gown. How shocked must Monique have been to get that phone call?

Neiman Marcus x Target x CFDA Holiday 2012 Collection Revealed

Neiman Marcus, Target and the CFDA announced a rather unexpected but definitely very intriguing holiday collaboration this past July, and now the 50-plus piece collection of men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items has been revealed.

The offerings were designed by 24 CFDA designers, including: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.

The collection includes everything from Rodarte wrapping paper for $7.99 to Alice + Olivia bicycle for $499.99. I’m thinking a quick shopping jaunt south of the border might be required so I can get my hands on a Prabal Gurung bow cape ($79.99) for me, an Eddie Borgo letter opener ($34.99) for the Mister, and a Jason Wu polka dot dress ($59.99) for the daughter I’ve yet to have.

Mark your calendars – the collection will be available in both Neiman Marcus and Target stores and e-commerce sites (neimanmarcus.com ships to Canada!) starting December 1, and is sure to sell out in a flash. Check out the gallery below for the complete collection. What’s on your wish list?

Neiman Marcus, Target and 24 CFDA Designers Team Up For Holiday 2012 Collection

By now we’re rather accustomed to hearing about unexpected collaborations (Valentino for GAP, anyone?), but Neiman Marcus x Target definitely takes the cake. The unlikely duo of retailers announced today the creation of a 50-plus piece collection of limited-edition men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items by a roster of 24 CFDA members.

The list of designers who have created pieces for the collection is impressive: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.

Due to hit both retailers’ stores and online shops on December 1, the collection is priced from $7.99 to $499.99, with the majority of items under $60. Not having yet seen a single item, this is already sounding like the collaboration of the year. Prabal? Proenza? Atwood, even? I can’t wait to see what some of my favourite designers have cooked up for Neiman Marcus and Target. Stay tuned!

Admiring from the Backseat: Billboard Music Awards 2012 Edition

Taylor Swift in Elie Saab

The 2012 edition of the Billboard Music Awards was held last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. I missed the show, but caught up on the red carpet fashions just so I could bring you this post and two firsts on this here blog: Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood.

Taylor stunned as the lady in red in Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2012, while Carrie looked positively lovely in an ethereal gown from Oscar de la Renta‘s Fall 2012 collection. Alicia Keys rounded out our short and sweet Billboards best dressed list with a demure Azzedine Alaia number that showed off her curves.

Did you catch the Billboard Awards? Who were your red carpet favourites?

Admiring from the Backseat: BAFTA Film Awards 2012 Edition

Michelle Williams in custom H&M Conscious Collection

The 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards, a.k.a. the BAFTA Awards, were held today in London. Although the red carpet wasn’t covered by television media on this side of the pond, the fashions were not to be missed. Favourites like Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton brought their sartorial A games to the evening’s festivities.

Michelle wore custom H&M Conscious Collection with an Olympia Le-Tan book clutch, while Tilda donned a beautiful cap-sleeved Armani gown. There were some very pleasant surprises too: Christina Ricci in a stunning gold Givenchy wrap dress, English television presenter Fearne Cotton in a lovely, bow-embellished Moschino number, and Jessica Chastain in a gorgeous metallic Oscar de la Renta dress.

What did you think of the looks on the BAFTA Awards red carpet?

Oscar de la Renta Launches New Fragrance at The Bay in Toronto

Oscar de la Renta and me

Designer Oscar de la Renta made a personal appearance at The Bay in Toronto recently to promote his new fragrance, Live in Love. Brimming with charm, he chatted with Fashion Television‘s Jeanne Beker, signed autographs, and even took the time to share some pearls of wisdom. “Elegance isn’t something you’re born with,” de la Renta said, “it’s how you live life.” Smelling like a lovely mix of florals certainly helps too, and that, I suppose, is where Live in Love comes in.
