Stylin’ from the Backseat: Overdressed

“You always make me overdress!”, T complained, midway through Fashion’s Night Out last week. That may be true, but when you’re choosing a getup for a FNO gig at Toronto Eaton Centre, the bar is set high.

For my FNO outfit needs I headed to TEC a few days before, and it wasn’t long before I found a gorgeous Clover Canyon neoprene frock at Mendocino; it was lust at first sight. Everything about the dress – the bold print, form-hugging fabric and new-to-me colour palette – was completely out of the box for me. But what better day to push my sartorial boundaries than on Fashion’s Night Out?

While I hit up TEC, T raided my wardrobe. She pulled my favourite Equipment blouse and oft-worn Club Monaco faux leather shorts and paired them with to-die-for Stuart Weitzman booties. I’ve never worn these three pieces this way, and I love how she borrowed them from my closet and made them completely her own, with fierce accessories and hairdo to match.

Were we perhaps overdressed for the occasion? Perpetually. And that’s the way I like it.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Retro Repeat

In the 3 weeks since I first confessed my love for my new Proenza Schouler shorts, my adoration for them has not waned. In fact, here I am again, sporting the same green shorts, still happy as a clam over one of my favourite acquisitions this sale season. Surely this must be a style blogging faux pas: not only repeating a piece (the shock!) but doing it two outfit posts in a row (the horror!).

I’ll even let you in on a little secret: I’ve worn these shorts way more than twice in the last 3 weeks. And, I love them so much that I even have a black pair on their way to me – true story. I have grand plans to wear both pairs until they’re threadbare, too. So consider yourself warned: if you’re not a fan of high-waisted green (or black!) shorts, I may be assaulting your computer screen with them quite a bit this summer.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Bananas Is My Business

It’s been a year now since the acquisition of my beloved Charlotte Olympia fruit pumps, and they still make my heart go pitter-patter every time I see them. So much so that when I happily took them out for their first outing this year (this winter shoot for Flare.com notwithstanding), I didn’t notice at first that they didn’t quite fit.

It had slipped my mind that when I purchased them last summer, I’d had to buy them a half-size (or was it a full size?) too large; I’d waited patiently until they were finally marked down and by then that was all that was left on the sale rack. Having to throw a pair of insoles or two into the shoes or do that awful toe-clenching walk you do when your shoes are too big seemed a small price to pay for my favourite spring shoes, like, ever.

Do you ever do that – buy wrong-sized shoes because you’d rather have them fit terribly than not have them in your life closet at all? Or is that some next level shoeaholic insanity that maybe I shouldn’t have publicly confessed to?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Quick Change Artist

On Day 2 of World Mastercard Fashion Week, I pulled an ADR. I arrived at the fashion week tents in this outfit and left at the end of the night in this here ensemble. Soia & Kyo had sent over their lush leather ‘Remi’ jacket for me to sport at my front row perch next to Kreesha Turner at their Fall 2012 runway show, so I had to pull a quick change behind some clothing racks backstage in between shows. I have no shame.

Indecencies aside, I managed to redeem myself with a very patriotic outfit. I styled my brand spanking new Soia & Kyo jacket with my trusty orange OBJECT for Danier clutch and my most favourite VAWK skirt. Canadian from head to toe, almost. The shoes weren’t, but they’re McQueen and, well, that’s kind of all that matters.

If you’ve been digging my VAWK duds of late, by the way, you should head to the brand’s sample sale this weekend. You know I’ll be there bright and early, cash at the ready. See you there?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Wear Canada x VAWK

That’s yours truly on FLARE.com, killing two birds with one fierce (if I may say so myself) outfit.

Day 3 of World Mastercard Fashion Week was dubbed Wear Canada Day by the lovely folks over at FLARE. It also happened to be the day of VAWK‘s Fall 2012 runway show. Wanting to support both, I rocked some VAWK, naturally.

I paired a sheer blouse (that leather bib!) with turquoise trousers (the colour! the fit!), both Fall 2011 runway pieces I was incredibly lucky to nab at VAWK’s last sample sale. The shopping gods (and a certain designer named Sunny and partner-in-crime named J) sure were looking out for me on these finds.

My oversized, croc-embossed clutch (which I’m obsessed with, in every colourway) was Canadian too. It’s a very recent acquisition from the Spring 2012 collection of OBJECT for Danier, by George Antonopoulos. I failed on the Canadian footwear front…but can you really call silver Alexander Wang tasseled pumps a failure?

Hair and make-up, a very different look pour moi, were courtesy of Redken Canada and Maybelline Canada. But that’s a (jaw-dropping!) story for another day. Stay tuned…

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Riding The Coattails

I wanted this McQ Alexander McQueen coat sooo badly. I featured it back in November (remember?) when I first discovered it at The White Space at the Bay, and proceeded to visit it many, many times before finally taking the plunge.

It’s one of my favourite pieces right now, and it’s all because of that tail. It serves no real functional purpose, but with it I could be a magician, or marching band member. Or perhaps a girl on her way to a Mackage fashion show. Who knows?

OBJECT for Danier by George Antonopoulos Spring 2012 Lookbook

Back in December, we posted a very colourful sneak peek of George Antonopoulos‘ Spring 2012 outing for OBJECT for Danier. We know you’ve been dying to see the complete collection, so here, finally, is the campaign and lookbook for the fashion director’s second collaboration with Canadian leather retailer Danier.

My wish list for this second OBJECT line was quite lengthy after the preview, and these images aren’t helping to narrow it down. The caramel leather shorts and perforated suede henley are must-haves, so they’re not budging from the list any time soon. The royal blue leather pants are to-die-for and I’m feeling sartorially brave these days, so those are staying on the list too.

I’ve also still got my eye on a second croc-embossed banker’s envelope. The black version from the Fall 2011 collection has become a wardrobe staple, and I need it in white for Spring. Or maybe orange. Or perhaps both? Decisions, decisions…

What’s on your OBJECT Spring 2012 shopping list?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: The Banker

Remember that Mugler event I attended at the Bay last month? I shot all the fabulous people there that evening, including Toronto socialites Suzanne Rogers in Givenchy and Stacy Kimmel in Mugler, but failed to document my own decidedly less glamourous outfit. Lucky for me, Jason Hudson, the Bay’s official photog for the evening, was on hand with his trusty camera to do the job.

Jason is, first and foremost, one of my favourite faces to see at fashion events, but also happens to be an incredible photographer. Through his lens, I always come out looking good, and that’s quite the feat. I’ve edited enough of my own photos to know that credit definitely goes to the photographer on that one, and not me!

On this particular occasion, Jason captured me looking rather smart. I’ve got the librarian-type glasses going on and my chic leather banker’s envelope by OBJECT for Danier tucked under my arm. I look like, well, an accountant, which happens to be my day job. In truth, this ensemble isn’t quite office-appropriate, but when 6 o’clock hits, the leather pants – a staple in my other life as a fashion blogger – come out to play.

Check out Jason’s other fabulous shots from the Mugler event here.

OBJECT for Danier by George Antonopoulos Spring 2012 – Sneak Peek!

Remember that time Canadian fashion director George Antonopoulos designed a Fall capsule collection for Danier and a certain blogger (read: me) went out and bought half the collection and wore it non-stop all season? Well, I’m living that right now and it’s about to happen all over again. Yesterday, I got a sneak peek of Antonopoulos’ second outing for OBJECT for Danier at the leather retailer’s Spring 2012 preview; not surprisingly, half the collection leapt instantly to the top of my Spring wish list.

Antonopoulos and Danier have, smartly, remade some of the most popular styles from the Fall collection in new material and colour combinations. My favourite leather dress, for example, is being produced for Spring sans sleeves and in the loveliest grey and pink suedes. The croc-embossed envelope clutches are back too, and are as to-die-for as ever. I’ve been toting the original black version from Fall all over town, and now I’m lusting after the orange…or perhaps the white?

I’d normally try to make a case for getting both colourways, but there’s no room for that in my Spring OBJECT budget; my wish list is already quite lengthy. In addition to a banker’s envelope in a yet-to-be-determined colour, I’ve also got my eye on the caramel leather shorts, perforated suede henley and royal blue leather pants (seriously!). Throw in a yellow skinny belt for good measure, too, and I’ve got all my coloured leather needs covered next season. Because, in case you were wondering, coloured leather is a legitimate need (not want), especially when done this well.

So which pieces are you needing from round two of OBJECT for Danier so far?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: By George!

George Antonopoulos and me

You know that feeling of loving a new purchase so much that you want to wear it right away? I didn’t get that with my leather dress from the OBJECT for Danier line by George Antonopoulos. In fact, I adored it so much that I wanted to save its first outing for a special occasion of sorts, rather than just any ol’ day.

After sitting patiently in my closet for a month and a half, my new leather frock finally got its inaugural call to duty for none other than the opening night of this season’s LG Fashion Week. With the Spring 2012 collection from Arthur Mendonça, for whom Antonopoulos serves as Fashion Director, on the agenda, I thought it the perfect opportunity to take the dress out for a spin.

The Alexander McQueen winged booties I paired my OBJECT dress with were also a piece that had a delayed debut after I purchased them last winter. Do you save particularly beloved new purchases for special occasions too?
