Admiring from the Backseat: 10 Best Red Carpet Looks from 2012

Diane Kruger in custom Nina Ricci at Cannes International Film Festival

From awards shows to movie premieres to fashion parties, it’s been quite a year on the red carpets. We saw new sartorial heroines emerge, like Jennifer Lawrence during her Hunger Games promotional tour, as well as established greats like Michelle Williams and Diane Kruger continue to bring their A games. With stunning look after stunning look to choose from, selecting a short list of the 10 best dressed of 2012 was a near impossible task. With much deliberation, we finally settled on the 10 that made our jaws drop and raised the red carpet bar.

What do you think of our top 10 best dressed of the year – did we nail it, or did we miss some of your favourites? Do tell!

Admiring from the Backseat: Cannes Film Festival 2012 Edition

Diane Kruger in Chanel Resort 2013

After 12 days of nonstop celebrity red carpet fashions, the 2012 edition of the Cannes Film Festival sadly came to an end yesterday. Because we’re obviously already in withdrawal, we thought we’d relive our favourite sartorial moments with – what else? – a best dressed list.

Leading the pack with a perfect run at Cannes this year was Diane Kruger, who wore three of our most memorable looks. She donned an ethereal mint green Giambattista Valli couture gown on opening night and continued to blow us away throughout the festival. Her Nina Ricci dress at the “Killing Them Softly” premiere was divine, while her Chanel frock at the amFAR Gala was quite possibly our favourite look of hers ever. Her hair, make-up and accessories were impeccable too.

Models Liya Kebede and Natasha Poly looked nothing short of fabulous in a sharp Roberto Cavalli suit and head-to-toe Gucci respectively. Actress Bérénice Bejo was a lovely surprise in a printed Giambattista Valli dress with Olympia Le-Tan book clutch in hand, while Paz Vega looked fierce in a feathered Stephane Rolland couture creation.

Vogue Nippon Editor-at-Large Anna Dello Russo stunned in white Alberta Ferretti, Chinese actress Yao Xingtong looked gorgeous in blue Elie Saab couture, and Kirsten Dunst was picture perfect in a to-die-for Dolce & Gabbana dress and Charlotte Olympia shoe pairing.

There you have it – our 10 best dressed at the 65th Festival de Cannes. Who made your list?

Admiring from the Backseat: Golden Globes 2012 Edition

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci Pre-Fall 2012

Awards season is officially underway, as the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards took over the television airwaves and Twitterverse last night. I dutifully watched every minute of pre-show red carpet coverage just so I could bring you this here post. And though I’d like to say that it was incredibly hard work on my part and that it was very tough to narrow the list down to only a handful of looks, the truth is that these 5 actresses and their stunning gowns were standouts that made my job easy.

Rooney Mara was one of the most highly anticipated red carpet arrivals of the evening, and she certainly didn’t disappoint in a chic black Nina Ricci dress. The always flawless Julianne Moore also chose a black gown, by Chanel Haute Couture no less. Her green tassel earrings by Fred Leighton complemented her scarlet hair perfectly.

That wasn’t the only burst of colour. Charlize Theron looked pretty in Dior pink, Emma Stone wore custom eggplant Lanvin, and Tilda Swinton marched to the beat of her own sartorial drum in sky blue Haider Ackermann. Each actress brought her very own brand of glam to the Golden Globes, making for one very fabulous red carpet.

Admiring from the Backseat: Carey Mulligan

I have yet to see Carey Mulligan act in anything (watching The Education is on my To Do list), but whether or not she’s actually any good at her craft almost doesn’t matter when she’s got the style thing so evidently down pat. I’ve admired a few of her looks over the past year (see here and here), but this Nina Ricci dress she wore to the premiere of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is by far my favourite to date.

In fact, this dress was one of my Fall 2010 runway picks back in March. It seems me and Carey (and/or her stylist) are on the same page. Call me if your stylist ever needs a vacay, Carey…I’d be more than happy to fill in!

Nina Ricci RTW Fall 2010

Style.com

Nina Ricci Fall 2010 evokes in me fantasies of a life as a Parisienne lady of leisure. I suppose, though, that it would be prudent for me to find a way to become a Torontonian lady of leisure and become acclimated with the lifestyle here at home first before trying to take the show on the road.

Not loving the hair, but the rest of this shot is just so lovely and feminine and romantic. This would be such a perfect look for Valentine’s Day…in a warm climate.

Nina Ricci Pre-Fall 2010

Style.com

The collection is so…lovely, for lack of a better adjective. The draping, the fabric choices, the colour palette – all combines for a very lady-like Pre-Fall 2010 collection from Nina Ricci. It’s gowns like the one in the fourth photo that make me wish I was a celebrity with many, many red carpet events to attend and just as many designers willing to lend me their divine wares. But alas I am not. And they are not. Le sigh.
