Admiring from the Backseat: Taraji P. Henson in Mary Katrantzou

There’s something about Mary that I just can’t get enough of. London-based designer Mary Katrantzou‘s colourful printed dress designs have become an obsession of late, and I’ve been coveting her Spring 2013 collection ever since it started hitting stores. My latest wish list item? The Starsailor print jersey dress, which I’ve been cyber-vising for weeks now.

That would explain my exclamation of “She’s wearing my dress!!” to T last night, when I spotted a photo of Taraji P. Henson at the New York screening of Mud. The Benjamin Button actress paired the whimsical frock with a pair of quirky printed yellow pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood, also a favourite of mine. In short, Ms. Henson wore the spring ensemble of my dreams.

Want the whole outfit from head to toe? The dress retails for $1,045 and the shoes for $695, both at Net-a-porter.

Street Style

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Mellow Yellow

My closet has been undergoing a colour evolution over the past year, and this Viktor & Rolf sale find from The Room at The Bay was the most surprising addition to date. Me in mustard yellow? Never would I have imagined! It’s never had a place in my wardrobe until this very blazer, and now I’m wondering where it’s been all my life. In fact, I’m so enamoured by the jacket that I wore it for a recent shoot for eBay.

I’m currently featured in the eBay Style Stories series. In the interview, I’m asked to divulge my favourite eBay find ever (too many to name, really!), what’s next on my must-buy list (hint: a piece from a Toronto-based jewelry designer), and my eBay saved search terms (top secret info!). Find out all of that and more about yours truly in the story here.

A Closer Look at Nicholas Kirkwood’s Designs for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2012-2013

As if the 60+ shots we posted yesterday of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2012-2013 edition weren’t titillating enough, here’s a little something for those of you who are more interested in footwear than in heavily-embellished bras and panties: Nicholas Kirkwood custom-designed each pair of shoes in the runway show. The London-based shoe designer’s signature platforms and sculpted heels adorned the feet of the likes of VS Angels Alessandra Ambrosia, Miranda Kerr and Adriana Lima when the show taped earlier this week.

Take a peek at the gallery below for a closer look at Kirkwood’s designs. Dying for a pair? All you needed was a pair of Angel wings to get your hands on one.

Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem Spring 2012

I want in on this floral trend. Since I’m unlikely to succumb to printed denim though, I’m turning to closet favourites Nicholas Kirkwood and Erdem for some floral in my life. The designers’ Spring 2012 runway shoe collaboration more than does the trick. Coming in a variety of florals and a range of heel heights, I’ll be wearing these lovely ankle strap pumps long after the trend is deemed over by the powers-that-be.

Available at The Room at the Bay and Holt Renfrew in Canada, and at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom in the US and online.

Coveting from the Backseat: Nicholas Kirkwood Spring 2012 Tropical Flora Print Pump

Nicholas Kirkwood is already occupying much of my Fall wish list (thanks to this shoe and that shoe), and now he’s already begun his assault on my Spring accessories budget too. This vibrant printed pump from the London-based footwear designer’s Spring 2012 collection has stolen my heart. Inspired by his recent Bali vacation, the shoe features a stunning tropical flora print in a joyful colour palette of orange, lime green and sky blue.

“Bali was my first holiday since starting the business seven years ago,” Kirkwood said. “And I came back wanting to do something more colorful and a little softer than before.” If all he needs is a bit of downtime in order to design such stunning shoes, then I’m happy to contribute to his vacation fund with a purchase here or there. Me, a shoe addict? Oh no, I’m just doing my part to keep the creative juices flowing in the industry. Yup.

Coveting from the Backseat: Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem Fall 2011 Velvet Platform Pumps

Earlier this summer, I posted 15 pairs of Nicholas Kirkwood Fall 2011 platform pumps that I was coveting. Today, I’d like to add one more pair to the list – a pair so beautiful they deserved their very own feature.

Continuing his partnership with ErdemNicholas Kirkwood created for the brand’s Fall collection the loveliest pair of velvet platform pumps in a signature Erdem abstract print. Aside from being intrigued by the thought of my very first pair of velvet shoes since the age of 5, I’m also madly in love with the colour palette. The design comes in a few different colours, but it’s this navy/pink/purple version, aptly titled “navy jungle” according to Saks.com, that made me gasp out loud at my computer screen.

The price made me gasp too, unfortunately. At $1,050, this pair of shoes may never make the leap from my wish list to my closet, but I’m OK with that. For now, I’m still learning how to walk in my first and only pair of Kirkwoods!

Coveting from the Backseat: Nicholas Kirkwood Fall 2011 Platform Pumps

At the fall/winter end-of-season sale at The Room at the Bay last year, I picked up my very first pair of Nicholas Kirkwood platform pumps - at 70% off, too, I might add. I’d never been much of a fan of the British footwear designer’s signature sculpted platform – not dainty enough for my liking, or so I thought – but ever since that first purchase I’ve had Kirkwood on the brain.

More specifically, I’ve been wanting more of those sexy, sky high platform pumps, and based on the Fall 2011 lookbook, it seems the designer has answered my prayers. From rose gold sequins to bronze python to laser-cut metallic leather, Kirkwood’s latest collection has all my platform shoe dreams covered. In fact, I’m dying for a pair of the satin rose print pumps. Which pair are you coveting?

Coveting from the Backseat: Nicholas Kirkwood Lace-up Lace Platform Sandal

I’ve been intrigued by Nicholas Kirkwood’s shoe line ever since I discovered it during The Room at the Bay’s The Next British Invasion event last Fall, though cautiously so. The designs are as close to artwork as shoes can get, so even Kirkwood’s tamest work is outside of this shoe addict’s comfort zone. Having picked up my very first pair of Kirkwoods during a shoe shopping spree at The Room’s recent end-of-season sale, I’m feeling decidedly braver and ready for a pair that pushes my footwear boundaries even further.

Enter these floral lace sandals from the Spring 2011 collection – sounds innocent enough, right? But where this particular sandal and the dainty, lady-like Valentino lace pumps that already permeate my closet diverge is at the suede latticework, shoestring laces and the signature Kirkwood contoured platforms. There may be lace involved, but these sandals are not for the faint of heart.

Are you up to the challenge of rocking these fierce platforms? Available at Bergdorf Goodman for $1,195.

The Room at the Bay Designer Sale – Now up to 70% Off

If you follow us on Twitter, you’re already well aware that The Room at the Bay‘s second cut sale began yesterday, offering up to 70% off on fall/winter designer clothing, shoes and accessories that’ll make your heart stop (in the best possible way). You’re also well aware that on such an important shopping day, I managed to leave my wallet at home. This would have been a rather disappointing post if the story ended there…but luckily it doesn’t! Despite the very poor preparation on my part, my visit was still a resounding success and I made out like a bandit. The drug of choice for the day was shoes, shoes, shoes my friends, and my partner-in-crime J and the loveliest sales associate in the world S only fueled my addiction. Evidence of my shopping debauchery is now sitting in my footwear closet.

The first piece of incriminating evidence is these Nicholas Kirkwood python platform slingbacks. I’m not usually a fan of big chunky platforms, but these are all kinds of amazing. I don’t generally use the word ‘hot’ thanks to a certain member of the Hilton family, but I can’t help it. These are HOT.
