Holiday Gift Guide 2012: 18 Covet-Worthy Gift Ideas for the Fashion Set

As I ran around a largely deserted mall on December 24th last year, I vowed to myself – for at least the fifth year in a row – that I would never leave the task of gift buying to the very last minute ever again. Next year, I promised myself, I’ll be one of those extremely prepared folks who get to brag about having finished their holiday shopping weeks – months even – in advance.

Well, it seems the moment of truth has come, and while I have exactly zero presents purchased to date, I do have a stellar gift guide prepared with a whopping 18 incredible items for only the most fashionable females on your list. Now, all you and I have to do is print out this blog post, get to the nearest computer or mall, and get shopping like the proactive, stylish elves we are. Good luck!

MOON Apparel x The Backseat Stylers Exclusive 20% Off Promotion!

Any gal who’s scoured the earth for a frock for a birthday, wedding or New Year’s Eve knows that a good cocktail dress is hard to come by. Here’s a tip from my many years of shopaholism: if you encounter a dress that’s pretty and flatters you, grab on to it and don’t let go until it’s safely in your closet, whether or not there’s an occasion for it in the foreseeable future. That’s how MOON Apparel’s crochet lace dress ended up in my wardrobe rotation a few seasons back, and it hasn’t left it yet.

I’ve been wearing my beloved navy lace number pretty much non-stop ever since. It’s been to 2 weddings, a birthday, a holiday party and several dates (with the Mister, of course!). Rule #7 from Anna Dello Russo’s ‘Fashion Shower’ music video is “You must wear outfit once,” so I’ll switch up the styling each time: belted vs. not belted, pearls vs. statement necklace, clutch vs. shoulder bag, dainty sandals vs. clunky ankle booties, jacket vs. no jacket, etc., etc.

And now, just as it’s becoming painfully obvious that I own but one dress, MOON Apparel has swooped in and saved me from my sartorial gaffes: they’ve reissued the very same design in navy, and in a stunning turquoise as well! Need one (or two!) in your life too? Snag the lace dress ($89) over at moonapparel.ca, where it will be 20% off exclusively for you lovely readers of The Backseat Stylers from November 8 to 11 with the code BACKSEATSTYLERS. Enjoy!

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Over The Moon

Everyone and their mother owns this MOON navy lace frock, or the skirt from the same collection, but I don’t care. I adore it; it reminds me of the gorgeous (but out of my snack bracket) Erdem dress Jessica Stam wore to cover FLARE’s September issue, and is a very reasonably-priced second prize. In fact, it’s already earned its spot in my wardrobe rotation, having served me well at two weddings so far.

This past weekend was wedding #2, and I chose to keep my ensemble on the minimalist side. I belted the dress, threw on my trusty Louboutins and grabbed my new Y-Mail clutch (first outing!). The next time this frock comes out to play, however, it’s going to be more edgy than ladylike, I promise. I’m envisioning a biker jacket, fierce boots and maybe even some fresh tattoos. Or maybe not. Stay tuned!

The dress is sold exclusively at The Bay, and is available online for $89. How would you style it?

MOON Launches Fall 2011 Collection with The Misshapes

The Misshapes, that uber cool Canadian-born, New York-based DJ trio, were in town recently. The occasion? The launch of the Fall 2011 collection of MOON, a brand created by the Mimran Group exclusively for the Bay. It was also MOON’s first birthday, so Toronto’s fashion set was invited to TIFF Bell Lightbox for a shindig where Leigh Lezark, DJ/model/Chanel brand ambassador, would be spinning with her fellow Misshapes. Lezark fangirls that we are, T and I showed up ready for our next celebrity encounter, as well as a healthy dose of reasonably-priced fashion, courtesy of the Mimran clan.

We got a taste of both, but it was MOON’s Fall collection that really got us excited. The outerwear, separates and knits for both men and women were chic and on trend, and the pricing was wallet-friendly, too. The men’s collection ranges from $20 for a t-shirt to $175 for a herringbone blazer, while the women’s collection is priced at $19 for a cotton tank to $135 for a trench coat. The stand out pieces, though, were the navy blue lace designs for the ladies; yours truly promptly ran out and picked up both the pencil skirt and shift dress.

MOON’s Fall collection has already hit sales floors at 90 the Bay locations across Canada, so I suggest you drop by your local store to check it out. Leigh Lezark won’t be there, unfortunately, but the collection alone is worth a visit!

Coveting from the Backseat: MOON Sequin Bolero Jacket

I’m apparently easily distracted by shiny objects, because I morphed from a sequin hater to a paillette obsessor in no time flat (see here, here and here for the evidence). This obsession with all things shiny continues into the Fall as the holiday season approaches and sequins become a wardrobe necessity again. Though I probably already have more sequined pieces than I have occasion to wear, a certain silver sequin bolero jacket by MOON recently caught my roving eye.

Leigh Lezark, DJ/model/Chanel beauty ambassador extraordinaire, was in town in August to lend a spinning hand to the launch of MOON, a moderately-priced line carried exclusively at the Bay and designed by the Mimran Group (aka Canadian fashion royalty). At the launch party, Miss Lezark rocked the sequin jacket in question like it was Chanel; I was happy to discover that, in fact, it’s a very affordable offering from MOON.

I’ve been stalking my local Bay store in search of the jacket ever since, with no luck yet. Instead, I’ve been tempted by some very chic Fall basics in the MOON section. If I’m not careful, I’ll have spent my entire sequin jacket fund on the lovely MOON dresses and cardigans before the jacket even hits the sales floor.
