A Look Inside the Michael Kors Hosted and Alexandra Richards DJed Shindig in Toronto

Designer Michael Kors touched down in Toronto yesterday for a meet-and-greet at his swanky Bloor Street boutique. Amidst racks of colourful, summer-ready apparel offerings and display cases of the brand’s wildly popular accessories, Kors chatted up editors, stylists and loyal customers, danced to tunes spun by model/DJ/rock royalty offspring Alexandra Richards, and even autographed a few of his handbags for his fiercest of fans.

Yours truly spent the evening doing what we do best: catching up with some of our favourite fashion folks, including our partner-in-crime Nelia Belkova and the life of every party Stacey McKenzie; ogling outfits, namely those of Jay Strut and Aya McMillan, who both showed up in fabulous black and white jailbird stripes; and shopping, natch. We even had our very own Kors encounter, and a snap with the grinning designer himself to prove it.

Designer Michael Kors in Toronto Today, Plus His Top 5 Red Carpet Looks This Year

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Pre-Fall 2013 at the Vogue Dinner for Michael Kors

Michael Kors has been on an epic roll of late. With a record-breaking IPO last year, a loyal fanbase that includes Michelle Obama, a spot on the Time 100, and soaring profits to boot, the American designer and former (and our favourite!) Project Runway judge is looking pretty unstoppable right about now.

In fact, Kors fever is about to hit an all-time high in Toronto with the #MKToronto bash this evening, where the designer himself will be in attendance. We can’t wait to hear some Project Runway-worthy pearls of wisdom.

Follow the #MKToronto hashtag for the scoop and stay tuned for our recap later this week. In the meantime, check out our 5 favourite Michael Kors looks on the red carpets so far this year.

6 Wardrobe Essentials Your Closet Needs This Fall

Nothing cures the end-of-summer blues quite like a fall fashion shopping spree, and it seems that’s exactly what the doctor (i.e. yours truly!) has ordered for you. We helpfully suggested recently that you hightail it to Sherway Gardens for your pick of the fresh new outerwear arrivals, and this week we’re proposing a second trip to the upscale shopping centre in Toronto’s west end. The mission for round two is 6 essential pieces your fall wardrobe won’t be complete without (clockwise from top left):

The Belt

The equestrian stretch belt by Banana Republic is a must-have accessory this fall. At a reasonable $68, it’s a flattering waist cincher and is an easy and affordable way to give new life to dresses, coats and sweaters from last year. It’s available in both black and brown, and obviously you need both.

The Print

When it comes to prints, no one does it quite like Clover Canyon. The California-based brand is churning out to-die-for pieces in eye-catching prints season after season. If you don’t already have some Clover Canyon in your closet, now’s the time to stop by Mendocino for your first and definitely not last. The Galaxy blouse ($312) is our pick.

The Clutch

An oversize leather tote or satchel to carry all your essentials with you would be the practical recommendation…but where’s the fun in that? Besides, we’ll assume you’ve already got one. Instead, pop by Michael Kors for a clutch in a gorgeous autumn shade like the ostrich-embossed Gia in crimson.

The Dress

A new season calls for a new party frock. This highly covetable style from Juicy Couture combines a deep mossy green lace with contrast leather trim, and can be both ladylike and fierce based on how its styled. It’s the perfect dress for date night or a girls’ night out. Retails for $328.

The Boot

The riding boot is to fall what the wedge sandal is to summer. If last year’s pair is in bad shape, Stuart Weitzman is the shoe shop to head to for a fabulous new replacement pair. Our pick? The Mount boot, which is the perfect balance of style and comfort. It comes in both black and brown, and retails for $675.

The Cardigan

Cardigan options for fall are aplenty, but great cardigans are hard to come by. Club Monaco’s Diamond sweater jacket ($159.50) is chic, versatile and oh so warm. It’s a piece that can be dressed up for the office or down for the weekend. In fact, we can see ourselves putting it on and refusing to take it off until spring.

There you have it – six items you should run out and buy right now. And don’t forget those fall jackets you were eyeing last week! Long wish list? Not a problem – that’s where Sherway Gardens’ Fall Into Style Contest comes in. Until September 17, enter to win the grand prize of a $1,000 shopping spree at Sherway Gardens or 1 of 20 $100 Cadillac Fairview shop! card® gift cards over on Sherway Gardens’ Facebook page.

Good luck and happy fall shopping everyone!

MICHAEL Michael Kors Fall 2012 Collection Preview

Nothing gets me more excited about the prospect of fall than the sight of a fabulous pair of boots or a chic wool trench, and those are exactly what I found at the MICHAEL Michael Kors Fall 2012 preview last week, and then some. It doesn’t matter that spring has only just arrived and cooler weather is many months away; I can appreciate a perfectly distressed sweater or to-die-for pair of suede knee high boots any time of the year.

Those weren’t the only items calling my name either. There were also the metallic silver platform booties (forget fall – I need a pair now), the snake-embossed chain strap bag, the tweed blazer with contrast leather sleeves (could it be any more me?)…the list goes on.

It’ll be a while still before the collection hits stores, but let’s look on the bright side: that just gives us that much more time to save up for every last piece we’re coveting. And judging by the length of my wish list, I’m going to be needing it.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Spring 2012 Accessories

One incredibly cold winter day, recently, I attended the MICHAEL Michael Kors Spring 2012 media preview – my first conscious exposure to the Michael Kors brand. The moment I stepped foot into the showroom, I wanted nothing more than to shed my parka and boots in favour of the chic, summery pieces around me. The accessories in particular, including shoes and bags perfect for balmier days (hopefully just around the corner?), made me long for warmer weather.

I’m a big fan of structured bags, and the Hamilton tote ($348) is right up my alley. It’s available in a bevy of colours, each more covetable than the next. Every version I saw at the preview instantly became a must-have – quite the dilemma. The stark white with contrasting black trim would fit perfectly into my monochromatic wardrobe, but the vibrant fuchsia would add such a lovely pop of colour to my bag collection. And what about the requisite matching sandals? Decisions, decisions…

Michael Kors Pre-Fall 2010

Style.com

I must admit that Michael Kors was never really on my radar until Project Runway. I’m not sure if that’s sad for me or sad for him (well, I’m fairly certain he doesn’t lose sleep over me…not often anyways). Nevertheless, I wasn’t expecting to be moved much by his pre-fall 2010 collection, but I am. It’s just so (sorry, for lack of a better word) chic. I want to be the woman who wears these ensembles to my job as a fashion editor by day and to after-work drinks with André Leon Talley and Melanie Huynh and Giovanna Battaglia at night (odd mix of personalities, but it’s my fantasy so I get to choose). Well, maybe not the leopard print gown.
