The Backseat Stylers in ELLE Canada’s ’60 Seconds to…TIFF Red Carpet Ready’ Beauty Video

I may be all about the fashion, but when it comes to makeup I’m a complete neophyte.

I have my handful of trusty products I stick to and rarely try new ones, mostly on account of my lack of skill. I won’t attempt a smoky eye, for example, because I just know I’ll end up looking like a raccoon. I envy those of you who can pick up a new cosmetic product and know exactly what to do with it to give yourself a new, fabulous look every day.

I desperately need a makeup lesson or two, so when Jennifer Weatherhead of ELLE Canada reached out to me with the opportunity to play model for their video, ’60 Seconds to…TIFF Red Carpet Ready’, I was definitely in! Off I went to Gee Beauty in Toronto, fresh-faced and ready for my red carpet transformation.

There, the lovely Celene Gee worked her magic, giving me a perfect complexion, sharp cheekbones, smoldering eyes (hurray for false lashes!), and a bold red lip – in no time flat. I was so thrilled with the results that I (a) asked Celene to move in with me (she politely declined) and (b) called the Mister and demanded an impromptu, fancy date.

TIFF had yet to arrive, but the look the Gee Beauty ladies gave me was exactly what I’d want for a trip down a red carpet. This ol’ mug has never looked better. Thank you, ELLE Canada and Gee Beauty!

Check out the video over on ElleCanada.com for a 60-second tutorial on how to achieve a red carpet-ready makeup look in a rush, including application tips, recommended Gee Beauty products and…me!

MAKE UP FOR EVER at [FAT] 2011

I dropped by [FAT] Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week 2011: Fashion Schematics last month to visit with FAT’s official make-up sponsor, MAKE UP FOR EVER. The lovely folks at MUFE had invited me backstage to check out the make-up looks up close and personal once again, as I’d done just one year ago during my very first [FAT] experience.

MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Melissa Nicholl and Jacquie Jeffery

Last year, I had had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of MUFE’s Melissa Nicholl and Jacquie Jeffery, who had patiently explained to this amateur of amateurs the benefits of MUFE. Truthfully, most of what they told me went over this make-up neophyte’s head, but suffice to say, I’ve been hooked on MAKE UP FOR EVER everything ever since!

I caught up with Melissa and Jacquie on Day 3 of [FAT] again this year to witness more of the magic they conjure up backstage. MUFE worked with each designer to develop the make-up look for their show, and it was fascinating to see how the looks on paper translated on the runway. The models walking Breeyn McCarney’s show had ghostly white make-up with black cupid lips that perfectly complemented her stunning white paper dresses. The concealed eyebrows and nude lip gloss on Heidi Ackerman and Lindsay Sinclair’s models completed the intergalactic, future-meets-past feel of their joint show.

These aren’t looks I’m likely to try at home any time soon, but every time I hear from the lovely ladies at MAKE UP FOR EVER, I’m inspired to be just a little more adventurous with my make-up!

Sephora x Shopbop Color Play 5 in 1

Two of my favourite retailers, Sephora and Shopbop, have teamed up on a limited-edition makeup set. The collection comes with five colour palettes, all inspired by one of the iconic looks in Shopbop’s Faces of Fashion lookbook:

- Boho Bombshell: dark blues, warm taupes, warm golds
- Classics Never Die: brown smoky eyes
- Angelic Boudoir: nudes and sands, with a touch of bright blue and fuchsia
- Black Is The New Black: black smoky eyes
- A Nod To Mod: bright blues, greens, pink, purples

Each of the sub-palettes includes 10 eye-shadows, 2 lip colours and 1 blush, and fits into a portable compact you can easily fit in your bag. This type of paint-by-numbers set is perfect for a complete makeup neophyte like me! If you’re an amateur too, the collection is available at Sephora for $30.
