The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 17, 2013 Edition

Chris Nicholas for Lookbook.nu, Newfoundland

Bare legs, exposed midriffs, open-toe shoes…it must be summer! Not officially, but patio season has definitely begun, and so has style blogging season. Only the very brave venture out into the Canadian cold for personal style shoots, so with the arrival of friendlier temperatures also comes a bevy of fresh faces on the Canadian street style scene. If not new, at least re-emerging from winter hibernation finally.

We’re rather excited to be featuring our first style-blogging Newfoundlander! Chris looks very dapper in blue gingam and a matching cobalt skinny tie, but it was his anchor-print socks that really stole our hearts. Sandy, another newcomer to the Lookbook this week, is also making quite the first impression with her head-to-toe paisley look and über cool handcuff clutch.

Many more style bloggers are sure to come out of the woodwork in the coming summer months, and we can’t wait to introduce them to you!

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 10, 2013 Edition

Sydney Hoffman for Lookbook.nu, Toronto

This week’s Lookbook is an unintentional ‘who wore it best?’ moment. A certain Zara fold over skort has become a favourite among Canadian style bloggers, and we’re loving all the different ways it’s being styled.

Ivy wore her white skort with a sculptural jacket and oversized printed tee for a futuristic vibe, while Joandy paired hers with floral, vintage Versace for a summery feel. Lisa went for a sportier look with her black skort, donning a chic blazer, dapper loafers and a cute panama hat for good measure.

So who wore it best? They’re all so good – it’s just impossible to choose just one.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – April 5, 2013 Edition

Caillianne Beckerman of Beckerman Bite Plate, Toronto

Head to toe coordination is always risky business – the results can either be a stroke of sartorial genius or a complete, tacky flop. This week, Canadian style bloggers really committed, and took their looks to the next level.

Caillianne had us seeing red: from her herringbone coat to her tie-dye jeans to her printed tote – not to mention those signature scarlet lips – the lady in red never looked so fierce. Neither did her dog, Cubby.

Kassandra‘s outfit this week was an ode to floral denim. She upped the chic factor of her printed jeans and matching button-down with a fitted navy blazer and gold accessories. Kudos on a styling job well done.

Too much of a good thing? Never. Especially when there’s a patterned Canadian tuxedo involved.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – March 29, 2013 Edition

Gracie Carroll of Gracie Carroll, Toronto

With two fashion weeks running simultaneously on opposite ends of the country last week, our favourite style bloggers gathered in Toronto and Vancouver to take in the Fall 2013 collections of Canada’s top fashion talents. They showed up to the tents in their sartorial best, donning standout pieces by homegrown designers.

Gracie and Alexander were both decked out in Canadian wares from head to toe. Alexander’s fierce get-up was all by Calgary native Caitlin Power, from the cobalt blue neoprene jacket to the green printed shirt to the leather pants. He even topped the ensemble off with a pair of blue ALDO sunglasses for that extra patriotic touch.

Gracie sported a coyote and suede coat by Chloé comme Parris that was beyond fabulous, styling it with a printed skirt also by the Toronto-based duo, a t-shirt by Montreal-based Mimi & Coco, a ruched leather clutch by Toronto’s Jenny Bird, and limited edition FLARE Magazine x ALDO shooties.

So many incredible pieces created in our home and native land – hats off to you, Gracie and Alexander, for representing!

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – February 22, 2013 Edition

Julia Monson for Lookbook.nu, Toronto

If, like us, you’ve been shying away from the printed pant trend, it’s probably about time you get on board. According to some of our favourite Canadian style bloggers, patterned pants are going nowhere fast.

This week, Krystin sported a teal animal print pair with just the right amount of sheen, Ivy donned a green pair that contrasted perfectly against her sunny yellow jacket, and Nelia chose a black-and-white striped pair she fondly calls her ‘Beetlejuice pants’. In fact, Nelia confesses to owning 20+ pairs of “crazy pants” – now that’s dedication.

Are you a printed pant hoarder like Nelia, or a neophyte like T and me?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – February 1, 2013 Edition

Gracie Carroll of Gracie Carroll, Toronto

The other day S and I visited The Coveteur to check out their feature on the Beckerman sisters and, needless to say, we absolutely loved it! Caillianne and Samantha (not to mention their dogs) never fail to impress us with their unexpected and refreshing ensembles and, likewise, their closets did not disappoint.

You’ll have to see it for yourself (if you haven’t already), but it got us thinking about other Canadian style bloggers whose closets we’re dying to take a peek at! We’re having a hard time choosing from all the incredibly stylish ladies and gentlemen we feature in our Street Style Lookbook - Gracie and Vanessa definitely! - but we’re curious to know: which style blogger’s closet would you most like to see?

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – January 11, 2013 Edition

Lisa Dengler for Lookbook.nu, Toronto/Zurich

While most of us bundled up in our winter coats over the holidays, Nelia wore the most charming outfit during her vacation in Punta Cana. She couldn’t have looked any more perfect for a tropical getaway in her white daisy lace dress, pink earrings, and yellow bracelets.

Though it’s not nearly warm enough for naked limbs at home in Canada, Ania and Dani surprised us with their midriff-baring looks this week. I’m the kind of person who will wear three shirts under a parka in zero degree weather and stare incredulously at anyone wearing anything less, including joggers in spandex, barelegged ladies in skirts and ballerina flats, and boys walking around on campus in gym shorts (WHY???).

I would wear snow pants regularly if that were acceptable among adults. I admire Ania and Dani for being brave enough to show some skin in minus-zero weather, and looking chic and totally badass (and not insane) while doing it.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – January 4, 2013 Edition

Vanessa Hong of The Haute Pursuit, Vancouver/Beijing

A few days ago S and I went outside – coatless – to take photos for our new feature, Shop Like a Backseat Styler, and I must say, it wasn’t easy. S suggested that I pose in the snow against a backdrop of conifers, which seemed like a great idea – very editorial – until I stepped onto the pristine layer of snow and my loafers disappeared in the snow. We nixed the plan for a scenic setting and decided to shoot in the middle of the street, and as S took shots of me I tried to pretend that the cold wind wasn’t blowing my hair into odd formations or making my teeth chatter. When we got home to look at the photos, I discovered that my desperate attempts to look casually cheerful had turned out looking more like a grimace….

How do style bloggers regularly brave the cold to share their outfits with us? On some occasions sheer willpower is sufficient to venture outdoors, but when that’s not enough amazing outerwear is the answer. Ania’s wool jacket stands out with its speckled texture and dramatic lapels, while Joandy’s sweeping coat combined with punches of bright yellow make for a powerful look. It should come as no surprise that the ever avant-garde Sam recently sported the cozy Maison Martin Margiela x H&M duvet jacket. I imagine it feels like a perpetual hug….

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – December 7, 2012 Edition

Ivy Xu for Lookbook.nu, Vancouver

Canadian winters are worth enduring for one reason and one reason alone: boots! (And possibly layering opportunities.) This week, our favourite style bloggers showed off some fabulous cold weather footwear.

Jay’s Diesel black lace-up boots are too good to be true, and were made for his delightfully oversized camo jacket. While the mixing of black and brown normally makes me shudder, Anik’s two-tone stacked heels are definitely an exception to the rule. I’m also digging the gently scuffed look of the boots, which I’m thinking was either achieved during a holiday shopping excursion at an impossibly crowded mall or at a rodeo. Caillianne’s Balenciaga shoes aren’t exactly boots, but they’re not not boots, either. They simply defy categorization, and that in itself is something worth appreciating.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – November 9, 2012 Edition

Liz Clark of Elizabeth Victoria Clark, Toronto

When it comes to accessories, have you ever thought about wearing a glove-shaped coin purse necklace around your neck? Donning a turban to protect your head from the fall chill? Or hanging a cat sweater casually over your handbag? No? Me neither. But this week’s round of personal style bloggers made just these bold choices for their accessories, and they all look amazing!

Caillianne worked a Maison Martin Margiela at H&M (launching next week on Nov. 15!) glove necklace and a vintage turban into a killer black-and-white ensemble that balanced chic on top with sporty on the bottom. The Beckerman clan can always be counted on for creative ways to accessorize.

There are tons of animal sweaters these days that are super cute and not at all kitsch (though I personally enjoy kitschy sweaters), and Alyssa shows us a fun way of wearing one – without actually wearing it. Hanging a sweater over your handbag is a genius solution because then you can have two amazing tops on you rather than just one (this would be the opposite of ‘less is more’ but would achieve the same effect – a brilliant outfit)!
