Admiring from the Backseat: Grammy Awards 2013 Edition

Rihanna in custom Azzedine Alaia

From Adele to Jay-Z, all of our favourite musicians gathered in L.A. for the 55th Grammy Awards tonight. We dutifully watched the red carpet coverage in fast-forward and scoured the internet for our 5 best dressed of the evening. At the very top, by a long shot, was Rihanna, who completely knocked our socks off in a custom red Azzedine Alaia gown. More of this, please, Riri.

Taylor Swift and Kelly Rowland also upped the glam factor on the Grammys red carpet, choosing stunning J. Mendel and Georges Chakra designs for the occasion. Janelle Monae and Beyoncé, both in pants, held their own in a sea of evening gowns, also making our best dressed list.

Who were your Grammy red carpet favourites?

Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney

We had a Grammy Awards 2012 viewing party chez The Backseat Stylers tonight, complete with a red carpet special that was, at times, more comical than chic. Out of a long line-up of musicians, our esteemed panel of T, me and special guest D (hey, we’re just as qualified as Kelly Osborne, if not more) could agree on only 4 to feature in our Grammys fashion round-up.

After much deliberation and in-fighting, we crowned Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney the best dressed of the evening. Runners-up included Alicia Keys in a fierce Alexandre Vauthier dress, Rihanna in a custom Giorgio Armani gown with a plunging neckline (eighties hair notwithstanding), and Adele in a lovely polka-dotted lace number. Thankfully, on this night, classic black triumphed over sheer orange lace and turquoise blue hair.

Did you watch the Grammys? Who were your red carpet favourites?

Admiring from the Backseat: Rihanna

Awards season continued last night with the music industry’s biggest night, the Grammy Awards. I’ve found in the past that musicians don’t seem to bring the same level of glamour that actors do to the red carpet, so admittedly my expectations weren’t overly high. When my breath was taken away mid-show by a gorgeous gown from John Galliano’s Fall 2010 couture collection for Dior, I was shocked to find that it was Rihanna who had delivered such unexpected beauty to the Grammy stage. Her hard, big-shouldered, tough-girl look had gotten a bit tired of late, so it was refreshing to see the singer in a floral-inspired floor-length evening gown. Rihanna sure does clean up nice.
