What a year 2012 was! It started with a Toronto Fashion Week runway walk and ended with some Tiffany & Co. hardware. In between, we attended a lot of events, made some lovely new friends, celebrated our 3-year anniversary, wrote 373 blog posts, and more than doubled our reach. Not too shabby, by our measure.
Here’s a look back at our favourite moments from the past year. Thanks to all of you lovely readers, brands, PR folks and fellow blogger friends for showing us so much love. We’re excited for what 2013 will bring, and hope you’ll stick with us to find out!

Here’s to embarking on new adventures in 2013 and looking chic while doing it. Happy new year, dear readers!

What can I say, I love a good dare. Especially when that dare happens to be exactly what I want anyway: an edgy new fringe by top hairstylist Justin German, just in time for fall. So where do I sign up? Over Twitter, apparently, in response to a call for brave souls willing to sacrifice a few locks in the name of a great hair story in FLARE Magazine. Or something to that effect.
So after being selected by FLARE‘s Beauty & Health Editor Wing Sze Tang to be one of 7 lucky ladies to take part in her ‘Real Girls Get Bangs’ challenge, I was off to Shagg to do the deed. A mere 24 hours later, my transformation from ‘hair neophyte’ to ‘hair neophyte with fierce bangs and bright red lips’ was complete, and expertly documented by photographer Norman Wong I might add.
Here’s a play by play of all that happened from the ‘Before’ to the ‘After’, and everything in between:
Step 1: Chop hair.
Step 2: Apply face paint.
Step 3: Get snapped.
Step 4: Show the crew some love.

As we wait patiently for news of the official launch date for the FLARE Magazine x ALDO Shoes Fall 2012 collaboration, here’s a look at the oxblood shooties in action, on none other than the designer herself, FLARE Fashion Director Liz Cabral. Over the last few days, these to-die-for shoes have been featured on Style.com, the New York Times Sunday Styles and, of course, on You Just Got Spotted.
The FLARE x ALDO collaboration will be available in October (see the complete collection), though the exact launch date is still a mystery. How much longer until we can get our hands on a pair too, Liz?

My Twitter profile reads, “Finance geek by day, fashion blogger by night.” Two very different worlds, and I generally prefer to keep them from colliding, sartorially speaking. I leave the leather, fur and sky-high platform stilettos at home when I’m headed to the office, but that’s not to say I don’t like to have a little fun with my work ensembles. When FLARE’s Ryan M. Cheung asked me, Kimberly Lyn of The Souls of My Shoes and Nelia Belkova of Style Blog to document a week’s worth of office-ready outfits for FLARE.com, I was up for the challenge.
The feature, ‘Blogger Style Challenge: Back to Work’, went live this week and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Nelia, Kim and I each have very different personal styles, but I love how they shine through despite strict office dress codes. We may be sitting in cubicles all day drafting memos and pulling together Excel spreadsheets, but we’re going to look good doing it, damn it. Anya dubbed me “the most stylish accountant” she knows, and I’m going to go ahead and assume she knows plenty of finance folks and wear that title with pride.
Thanks Ryan and FLARE for giving us working girls some love! Outfit photos and details are below, including my office style tips and commentary on my favourite work-appropriate pieces. Check out the full feature over on FLARE.com.
MONDAY: BACK-TO-BACK MEETINGS
J.Crew blouse / J.Crew pencil skirt / Balenciaga bag / Chanel pearls / Bruno Frisoni shoes / MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup
The Look: On busy, meeting-filled days, I reach for an outfit that looks polished and won’t distract from what I have to say. This green blouse and abstract print skirt pairing is a go-to ensemble for such days because it’s interesting without being too loud. My Balenciaga motorcycle bag used to be reserved for evenings and weekends, but I’ve recently started carrying it to the office as well. It adds just the right touch of edge to what are otherwise usually very classic work ensembles.
Style Tip: Nothing adds polish to a work outfit quite like a strand of pearls. My Chanel double-wrap pearl necklace is one of my most prized accessories and the easiest to wear.
TUESDAY: DAY AT THE DESK
J.Crew blouse / Giambattista Valli skirt / J.Crew necklace / Chanel bag / Christian Louboutin shoes / MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup
The Look: When I know I’ll be spending most of the day at my desk rather than in meetings, I can have a little more fun with the sartorial choices I make that morning. Those are the days when I pick the brightest colours and boldest accessories, like I have with this J.Crew yellow blouse and Giambattista Valli purple skirt combination.
Style Tip: Don’t be afraid to wear colour to the office! Polished and professional work attire doesn’t have to be black, white and grey. If you’re feeling shy, start with one pop of colour.
WEDNESDAY: MAJOR PRESENTATION
Nanette Lepore tweed suit / Valentino Red shirt / Calvin Klein tights / Valentino shoes / Celine bag / MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup
The Look: When I have a major presentation on the day’s schedule, there’s no other option for me than a sharp suit and chic shoes. I feel my most confident when I’m sporting a well-fitting skirt suit and my beloved Valentino bow booties. My navy tweed suit by Nanette Lepore is my absolute favourite. It fits like a glove and has ladylike details like a pleated back on the skirt and rounded collar and pockets on the jacket.
Style Tip: A crisp white shirt is a must in any office-ready wardrobe, but plain isn’t in the requirements. My Valentino Red blouse has a ruffle-trim placket, but I’m also a big fan of epaulets, cute buttons and well-placed pockets.
THURSDAY: DESK TO DINNER
Erdem shirt / J.Crew skirt / Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem shoes / Chanel bag / MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup
The Look: An ensemble that I’ll pull together for both the workday and dinner plans will usually be on the more adventurous side. This bright green pencil skirt paired with my Erdem floral print blouse and matching shoes certainly fits the bill.
Style Tip: My work wardrobe is full of pencil skirt after pencil skirt, and lately I’ve been addicted to J.Crew’s no. 2 pencil skirt. They fit me well, and come in a range of to-die-for colours, prints and fabrics each season. When you find a particular style that you love and flatters your body type, go ahead and stock up! Because my collection of J.Crew pencil skirts includes navy cotton eyelet, pink tweed and green cotton abstract print, no one is the wiser.
FRIDAY: CASUAL COOL
Sandro blouse / Theory pants / Banana Republic necklace / OBJECT for Danier clutch / Charlotte Olympia shoes / MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup
The Look: Four workdays out of five you’ll find me in pencil skirts, but when Friday rolls around or I have a fashion industry event after work, I may just break out some pants. On those days I’ll pull some cheekier pieces out of my closet, as I have here with a peter pan collar blouse by Sandro, a croc-embossed leather banker’s envelope by Object for Danier and, of course, cat shoes. My Charlotte Olympia velvet cat pumps are the most whimsical shoes in my closet that can make the leap to the workplace without looking inappropriate. They put a smile on my face and a spring in my step even on the busiest and most frustrating of workdays.
Style Tip: Who says office footwear needs to be bland and sensible-looking? Pick a pair of not-so-basic pumps in a fun pop of colour, with an eye-catching embellishment, in an interesting material or silhouette…or, better yet, all of the above!
On Tuesday, August 7, we celebrated Three Years of Style at the Thompson Toronto Rooftop Lounge, co-hosted by Nelia Belkova of Style Blog, Kimberly Lyn of The Souls of My Shoes and yours truly in honour of our joint 3-year anniversaries. You came out for the festivities in full force and knocked our Louboutin stilettos off with your overwhelming support…and incredibly stylish get-ups!
We were honoured to celebrate our blog birthday with so many of our favourite fashion industry folks, including designers John Muscat and Jennifer Wells of LINE Knitwear and Monica Mei of Aime, many of the city’s fashion writers and PR superstars, a blogger contingent that included Anita Clarke of I Want – I Got, Jay Strut of the eponymous blog, and Richard Fabregui and Marc Piercey of Toronto is Fashion, and more. It was also a huge pleasure to chat with you lovely readers and Twitter friends, many of whom we were meeting in person for the very first time.
With all the love you showed us, we couldn’t let you go home empty-handed. The first 50 guests to arrive each snagged a rather epic (in our humble opinion) swag bag featuring Ardell eyelashes, an eLUXE discount card, essence cosmetics make-up, a copy of FLARE Magazine‘s August 2012 issue, Goody Double Wear elastics, John Frieda hair products, a Nella Bella handbag hook, a Roots iTunes playlist redemption code, Tweezerman tweezers, and a bottle of vitaminwater Zero.
We also awarded our most stylish attendees with $650 worth of prizes. Our grand prize winner, Aya McMillan, took home a $250 eLUXE gift card and a Nella Bella handbag, while Jessica Chiu, Liane Fong and Diego R. each won $100 gift cards from Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Danier Leather and Roots. And as if that wasn’t already enough, we also drew Wendy Leung‘s name in our draw for a fabulous $550 LINE Knitwear leather jacket. Colour us jealous!
After an evening of such fabulous fun, we’d like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all our readers and friends who celebrated with us atop the Thompson rooftop – it meant the world to us! Thank you too to all the brands who supported Three Years of Style, Sheila Hui for all her hard work, and You Just Got Spotted for the fantastic photos to remember it all by. Not to mention lots of love to our co-hosts, Nelia and Kimberly, the very best blogging BFFs we could ever ask for. An honourable mention to Mother Nature as well for providing a stunning sunset and perfect weather for a rooftop party.
The countdown to our 4th anniversary bash next year officially begins…now!

Liz Cabral at the launch of the first FLARE x ALDO collaboration
FLARE Magazine Fashion Director Liz Cabral made a rather unexpected and epic announcement via Twitter last night: there’s going to be a round #2 to her collaboration with ALDO Shoes!
This tweet literally made me squeal because (a) I’m a shoeaholic and (b) I expect a shoe designed by Liz Cabral and ALDO to be nothing short of genius, based on the results of their first joint effort. The FLARE x ALDO wedges released in April 2011 were an instant hit (see the evidence here, here and here), and are officially the most complimented pair of shoes I own.
The second FLARE x ALDO collaboration will be revealed in September and available in stores and online in October. Liz has hinted that the collaboration involves more than a shoe. What do FLARE, Liz and ALDO have up their proverbial sleeves this time around? I can’t wait to find out!

I’m head over heels in love with this editorial in Flare‘s May 2012 issue. Starring actress Sarah Gadon in lace, lace and more lace, this spread, aptly titled ‘Amazing Lace’, is styled to perfection by Liz Cabral and snapped by Chris Nicolls.
It’s the type of editorial I’d like to ever so carefully tear out of the magazine and post on my mood board as inspiration for Spring dressing. Except that I don’t have a mood board, so I’ve gone and done the next best thing – posted the images here so you can all be mesmerized by them too.

That’s yours truly on FLARE.com, killing two birds with one fierce (if I may say so myself) outfit.
Day 3 of World Mastercard Fashion Week was dubbed Wear Canada Day by the lovely folks over at FLARE. It also happened to be the day of VAWK‘s Fall 2012 runway show. Wanting to support both, I rocked some VAWK, naturally.
I paired a sheer blouse (that leather bib!) with turquoise trousers (the colour! the fit!), both Fall 2011 runway pieces I was incredibly lucky to nab at VAWK’s last sample sale. The shopping gods (and a certain designer named Sunny and partner-in-crime named J) sure were looking out for me on these finds.
My oversized, croc-embossed clutch (which I’m obsessed with, in every colourway) was Canadian too. It’s a very recent acquisition from the Spring 2012 collection of OBJECT for Danier, by George Antonopoulos. I failed on the Canadian footwear front…but can you really call silver Alexander Wang tasseled pumps a failure?
Hair and make-up, a very different look pour moi, were courtesy of Redken Canada and Maybelline Canada. But that’s a (jaw-dropping!) story for another day. Stay tuned…
The last time Flare Magazine‘s Assistant Digital Editor Ryan M. Cheung sent me an assignment, it was to Wear Canada. A few weeks ago, mission #2 landed in my inbox: don my favourite Spring shoes for a “Bloggers Style” feature. Mission accepted with pleasure, Ryan.
One very quick shoot in high velocity winds and below freezing temperatures later, I find myself on Flare.com amongst 29 of the very best fashion and style bloggers from across the country. And wearing my beloved Charlotte Olympia ’Bananas Is My Business’ fruit-themed pumps, no less. There was never any question in mind as to which shoes I’d choose for the occasion, only what to pair them with. My very first Equipment blouse (start of a new addiction, I’m sure), favourite FALLON cuff of the moment (an ongoing obsession), and my classic Marc Jacobs Stam (an oldie but a goodie) did the trick.
I’m ready for Spring, and more importantly Spring shoes! I’ve got a few new pairs I’m dying to take out for a spin. What say you, Mother Nature? Check out Flare.com‘s Spring Shoe Guide and Bloggers Style story here.
