Holiday Gift Guide 2012: 18 Covet-Worthy Gift Ideas for the Fashion Set

As I ran around a largely deserted mall on December 24th last year, I vowed to myself – for at least the fifth year in a row – that I would never leave the task of gift buying to the very last minute ever again. Next year, I promised myself, I’ll be one of those extremely prepared folks who get to brag about having finished their holiday shopping weeks – months even – in advance.

Well, it seems the moment of truth has come, and while I have exactly zero presents purchased to date, I do have a stellar gift guide prepared with a whopping 18 incredible items for only the most fashionable females on your list. Now, all you and I have to do is print out this blog post, get to the nearest computer or mall, and get shopping like the proactive, stylish elves we are. Good luck!

eBay Holiday 2012 Designer Collaboration – Sneak Peek!

Last week, eBay announced that the online auction site had partnered with seven designers on a limited edition holiday 2012 collection. On Wednesday, the 40+ pieces created by Dana Lorenz of Fallon, Jonathan Adler, Billy Reid, Chris Benz, Steven Alan, Amy Smilovic of Tibi and Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais were unveiled.

All priced under $100, the collection features men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, travel and electronics accessories and home décor. Standout pieces include a gorgeous choker by Fallon, a sweatshirt with a lace penguin by Tibi, and silk twill pajamas by Chris Benz. I certainly wouldn’t mind any or all of the above under my Christmas tree…hint, hint.

The collection will be available through eBay’s Fashion Vault starting November 12. Will you be bidding buying?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Déjà Vu

After last week’s post featuring my beloved Erdem blouse from Spring 2011, I continue to gleefully shop my own closet for warm weather clothes. From the deepest, darkest corner I pulled out this Inhibitus jumper from an incredible China trip 2 years ago. I had hoped that putting it on again would instantly transport me back to the fabulous shopping malls and bustling night markets of Hong Kong, but it sadly hasn’t happened yet.

On the upside, I also managed to find my FLARE x ALDO wedges in the mess that is my shoe closet. I wore them out and about in some of the priciest luxury boutiques in the city one day, and the compliments came non-stop. These babies are universally adored. I always feel bad breaking the news, though, that they were a limited edition shoe from last year that has long since sold out. Perhaps we’re due for another fabulous shoe collab. How about it, FLARE, ALDO?

The Backseat Stylers in Flare.com’s Spring Shoe Guide

The last time Flare Magazine‘s Assistant Digital Editor Ryan M. Cheung sent me an assignment, it was to Wear Canada. A few weeks ago, mission #2 landed in my inbox: don my favourite Spring shoes for a “Bloggers Style” feature. Mission accepted with pleasure, Ryan.

One very quick shoot in high velocity winds and below freezing temperatures later, I find myself on Flare.com amongst 29 of the very best fashion and style bloggers from across the country. And wearing my beloved Charlotte Olympia ’Bananas Is My Business’ fruit-themed pumps, no less. There was never any question in mind as to which shoes I’d choose for the occasion, only what to pair them with. My very first Equipment blouse (start of a new addiction, I’m sure), favourite FALLON cuff of the moment (an ongoing obsession), and my classic Marc Jacobs Stam (an oldie but a goodie) did the trick.

I’m ready for Spring, and more importantly Spring shoes! I’ve got a few new pairs I’m dying to take out for a spin. What say you, Mother Nature? Check out Flare.com‘s Spring Shoe Guide and Bloggers Style story here.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Making a Cameo

Fellow blogger Spiro Mandylor took this snap of (a semi-reluctant) me at the ShopCatch launch party this week. My beloved one-of-a-kind cameo pin by TOODLEBUNNY + the vintage feel of the shot (courtesy of Instagram) made for a fun photo I wanted to share. Plus, it was my brooch’s first ever outing, so I wanted you all to see it. And to go check out TOODLEBUNNY‘s site! Because they’re an awesome Canadian jewelry line, and I love them.

P.S. Such a fun name too! TOODLEBUNNY, TOODLEBUNNY, TOODLEBUNNY.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Seasonless

The last time I wore this David Dixon sample sale find, it was the dead of winter; black tights and closed-toe shoes were a necessity more than a fashion choice. In the heat of July I pulled the dress out of my closet for round two, and left the pearls, tights and pumps behind this time. Instead, I turned to purple Gucci sandals for a pop of colour and my FALLON cuff for some edge, producing a decidedly very different vibe from my first go at styling this dress. Sure, the fabric was a bit heavy for summer and I sweltered a bit, but it was all worth it.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: One Plus One

I have a confession to make. See, I could tell you that I came up with the idea to pair this simple ivory silk tank top with this lovely black lace skirt, and you would all believe me. Except that it’s not true; I didn’t do it. Tara Jarmon did. The Canadian born, Paris-based designer has a knack for creating chic, feminine pieces like this combo dress, and I’ve been a big fan of her eponymous line ever since I discovered it at The White Space at the Bay.

The rest of the ensemble, I’m happy to report, was my doing. It all could have gone quite granny on me, but I balanced out the rather ladylike dress and Chanel accessories with some edge via my beloved FALLON cuff and Louboutin stripper heels. Perfect beach outfit, non? I kid, of course. I wore this ensemble to attend the wedding ceremony of a very lovely couple, E & D. One plus one, just like a combo dress.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Take a Bow

I learned a very valuable lesson when I wore this ensemble to Day 1 of LG Fashion Week: If you don’t want to be pet, fondled, stroked, or touched really in any manner, don’t wear a cuddly-looking fur vest, because doing so is apparently an invitation to all for all of the above. I didn’t mind though, really, because I was sporting my brand spankin’ new FALLON cuff.

The Violet XL cuff from FALLON’s Fall 2010 collection was on my Christmas list for Santa back in December, but the man in the red suit didn’t come through for me; luckily, RAC Boutique did! When I tweeted recently about how I’d been searching for this cuff in vain, the lovely Faith Orfus, lovely co-owner of RAC, graciously let me know that they had one left, a fact I was woefully unaware of. I paid RAC a visit shortly thereafter and the rest, as they say, was history.

Thank you, RAC, for the exceptional customer service and the cuff of my dreams! This is the start of a wonderful relationship, I’m certain, between you, me, and FENTON/FALLON…

Coveting from the Backseat: FALLON All Points West Lasso Collar Necklace

On a recent visit to RAC Boutique here in Toronto, I spotted the stunning FALLON All Points West lasso collar necklace on the neck of a very chic mannequin. It was lust at first sight, and even though I walked out of the store that day without it, I’ve been dreaming of it ever since – it’s some kind of fierce! I’ve picked up a few FALLON pieces recently, but my obsession with this fabulous necklace solidifies my status as an official FALLON addict.

Available online at Barneys and TOBI for $350 and in-store in Toronto at RAC Boutique.

Dear Santa…

Dear Santa:

Hope all is well with you, Mrs. Claus, the reindeer and the elves up in the North Pole! I know we only just saw each other at Mr. Backseat Styler’s company Christmas party last week, but I thought I’d write to you to remind you of our discussion at the time. As you know, I’ve been a tad overindulgent this past year, so I probably only deserve a lump of coal in my stocking. However, should you decide – in all your infinite, jolly wisdom – to give me a free pass this year, I have taken the liberty of listing out what I would most like to see in my stocking. In the unlikely event that 3 days is not sufficient time for the elves to cobble together these items, I’ve also included where each item can be purchased. The prices I’ve listed don’t include the Kris Kringle discount though – I’m sure you could do much better.
