Emma Stone can’t hit a red carpet without me blogging about it, it seems. Her track record has been impeccable this awards season, and I’m dying to see what she wears to the Oscars this Sunday. Till then, feast your eyes on Emma in Elie Saab Haute Couture.
For Essence’s 5th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon this week, the actress chose an exquisite white dress from Saab’s Spring 2012 couture collection. She rounded out her very ladylike ensemble with a Ferragamo woven leather box clutch and blush open-toe pumps by Brian Atwood. In a word: perfection!

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2012
Awards season continued tonight with the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which meant another Sunday evening of red carpet fashion. To my delight, a few actresses donned designs that were fresh off the Spring 2012 haute couture runways: Zoe Saldana stunned in Givenchy while Natalie Portman looked impeccable in Giambattista Valli.
Rose Byrne of Damages also took to the red carpet in couture; she was a pleasant surprise in a sparkling ivory Elie Saab jumpsuit. Rounding out my top five looks of the evening were two style frontrunners this awards season, Emma Stone and Michelle Williams, who rocked the red carpet in Alexander McQueen and Valentino respectively.
Did you watch the SAG Awards? Who were your sartorial favourites?

I love this time of year: awards season, couture week, and the merging of the two worlds on the red carpets. With haute couture week having just wrapped up for the Spring 2012 season and big awards shows like the Grammys and Oscars around the corner, we scoured the couture collections of the biggest fashion houses for dresses we can’t wait to see on the biggest red carpets of the year.
Might Rooney, Michelle or Tilda be sporting one of these gorgeous gowns at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards?

January Jones in Carolina Herrara Pre-Fall 2011 at the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards
The end of a year always brings about an overabundance of ‘best of’ lists, so of course we had to contribute one of our own. Putting together a list of the top ten red carpet looks of 2011 was a surprisingly easy task. These 9 women – 8 actresses and 1 real life princess – and their 10 ensembles (Emma Stone is listed twice!) were clear standouts in our eyes. So much so that we’re not even going to bother to explain our choices – these stunning looks speak for themselves. Plus, we’re still recovering from our holiday turkey feast.
From Anne Hathaway‘s sequin Armani Privé to Cate Blanchett‘s lavender Givenchy, these are the types of clothes that make us wish that we too were Hollywood actresses or fairy tale princesses whose job descriptions included gracing red carpets in couture. But, alas, we are not…yet. So until such day that fact changes, we’ll settle for daydreaming about strutting our stuff in January Jones‘ gold lace gown by Carolina Herrera and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge‘s blush sequin dress by Jenny Packham instead.

Evan Rachel Wood channelled old Hollywood glamour on the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet last night. Pairing a sparkling Elie Saab Fall 2011 couture gown with Fred Leighton jewelry, a Judith Leiber bag and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, the actress brought movie star style to the small screen awards show.
From the sleek hair to the chic train, Wood’s look was red carpet perfection, managing even to outdo model Jac’s runway look (pictured below). Though she didn’t take an Emmy home for her Mildred Pierce performance, the actress won best dressed, in our books. And that’s a fantastic consolation prize, if we may say so ourselves.
Elie Saab, by the way, also dressed Kate Winslet and Emily Blunt for the Emmys, making him the evening’s unofficial red carpet winner. Who were your sartorial favourites from last night’s show?

I’m at a loss for adjectives that adequately describe the beauty of the haute couture gowns shown in Paris this week, so I will let the dresses speak for themselves. Please click to enlarge, so you can see each intricate detail and ornate embellishment in high resolution.

A few years ago, in a spontaneous pop quiz I threw Mr. Backseat Styler’s way, I asked him what my favourite colour was. He said “purple”, without hesitation; in fact, I contemplated his response longer than he did. I concluded in the end that he was right. Any doubt I had as to the correctness of his answer was due to the fact that I rarely actually wear purple. Or have very much purple in my wardrobe, for that matter. This sad fact is a result, I think, of my fear of colour and, in particular, of looking like a bridesmaid. Thanks to Cate Blanchett and Mila Kunis, however, I’m seeing the error of my ways.

Both wore lavender haute couture to the Academy Awards last night. Blanchett was the only risk-taker on the Oscars red carpet, donning a stunning Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci gown and looking incredibly fierce doing it. Kunis capped an impressive red carpet season with a breathtaking number from Elie Saab. Neither looked even remotely like a bridesmaid. Feeling rather inspired, I’m now ready for an infusion of lavender in my closet!
After devoting almost 6 hours of my life to watching this year’s Oscars ceremony and red carpet coverage, I’m left with only this post to show for it. Indulge me – who were your red carpet favourites?

Swoon. It’s all so soft and pretty and romantic. Not to mention sexy – those slits are serious. Should I ever have the opportunity to wear couture, I can only dream that Elie Saab would take my call.
