We here at The Backseat Stylers live for fall fashion. One of the biggest reasons? The ankle bootie. It’s by far our favourite shoe silhouette, and we were reminded of our love for them when we spied Krystin of Suburban Faux Pas (featured in last week’s edition of The Canadian Street Style Lookbook) sporting a pair of high-heeled, leopard print beauties. Now we’re digging all of ours out of the closet, but – like any good shoeaholic – are longing for a new pair to add to the fall rotation.
We searched high and low for a pair worthy of splurging on, and found ourselves head over heels in love with a whopping 20 gorgeous styles. Between the adorable, bow-adorned Christian Louboutin ‘Autonodo’, the ladylike ‘Pamla’ booties by Enzo Angiolini, and the incredibly fierce ‘Kim’ metallic lace-ups by Gucci, we’re having a rather tough time settling on just one pair…or even two. We dare you to try.
Baseball jackets are everywhere right now, both on the field and off. We’d managed to resist their charms until Alyssa of Ordinary People donned a geeky chic plaid version with a vintage feel last week. All of a sudden, we were searching the malls and the interwebs for our very own. Not only did we find some seriously stylish baseball jackets, but we got a tad carried away and came upon some pretty darn good varsity jackets and even bomber jackets too.
Check out the gallery below for 15 of our favourites right now, including an amazing printed neoprene jacket by Clover Canyon for $387 (not for the faint of heart), a Hudson’s Bay Company Olympic Collection varsity jacket that’s on sale for a mere $47.50 (for men’s, but we’d rock it), and the fiercest black quilted leather baseball jacket by Roots Canada for $568 (the very one first worn by Drake!).
Will you be sporting a baseball/varsity/bomber jacket too this fall?
As far as bold, statement-making pieces go, jewelry and shoes get most of the play around here, but when we spotted Marla of Trend Struck sporting a lovely feather mini last week, we knew the next hero piece to join our wardrobe rotation would be a skirt.
We scoured the internet for the most gorgeous skirts the fall collections have to offer, and were stunned by the sheer number of to-die-for options. From minis to maxis and everything in between, we found 16 skirts guaranteed to make your (and your date’s) heart skip a beat.
On the pocketbook-friendly end of the spectrum we discovered ASOS‘s lace pencil skirt with floral appliqué ($71) and Topshop‘s holographic A-line mini (£38), while on the designer end of the spectrum, we’re daydreaming about the magenta silk-satin maxi by Balmain (USD$5,865) and draped lamé pencil skirt by Giambattista Valli (USD$3,565).
Check out the gallery below for our 16 favourite statement skirts right now, and get those gams ready.
If there’s one thing that has us just a little less sad-faced about the impending arrival of fall, it’s the opportunity to wear leather again. Though some of us never abandoned our favourite leather pieces even on the hottest of days, including Lisa who we featured in The Canadian Street Style Lookbook last week, most of us retired them over the summer and are just about ready to bring them out to play again. First to come out of the closet? Most definitely our leather shorts, the perfect piece with which to transition into autumn.
If you don’t already have a trusty pair from seasons past, now’s the time to fill that gaping hole in your fall wardrobe rotation. There are plenty of options available to be shopped right now, some conveniently on clearance and others just arriving on the sales floor. From Lisa’s faux leather bermudas by Zara ($49.90) to a vegan leather alternative from BLANKNYC (USD$92) to a runway design by Derek Lam (USD$1,650), check out the gallery below for 12 pairs of buy now, wear now leather shorts.
We recently confessed to a healthy obsession with jumpsuits. It should come as no surprise then that when we spotted Liz and her printed number, we just had to feature her in last week’s edition of The Canadian Street Style Lookbook. We always thought a good jumpsuit was hard to come by, but inspired by Liz, we scoured the internet in search of our very first, and perhaps yours.
Imagine our delight when we found 20 stylish jumpsuits just ready to be added to a virtual shopping bag and shipped straight to your doorstep. From boohoo.com‘s casual pinafore dungaree trousers at a pocketbook-friendly $45 to Stella McCartney‘s black-tie ready, structured satin design for around $3,000, we’ve found a stylish jumpsuit for every occasion and at every price point.
Check out the gallery below for our 20 favourite jumpsuits right now. Will you be taking the leap?

On November 8, 2012, The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Yorkville boutique George C hosted the 2nd Annual Lunch with Margaret & George at the Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto. Surrounded, quite literally, by lovely ladies who lunch decked out in their noon-hour finest, the charity function was one of the swankiest and most fashionable meals I’ve had the good fortune of enjoying in some time.
The highlight of the event came when, just before dessert, guests were treated to a presentation of Derek Lam‘s Spring 2013 runway collection. Though the New York-based designer himself was unfortunately unable to attend as planned (Mother Nature had other, snow-filled plans for him), his pieces, inspired by Barkley L. Hendricks paintings from the 1970s, thankfully made it to the luncheon for our viewing pleasure. And pleased we were, with the very covet-worthy line-up of ready-to-wear, handbags and shoes that we got to see up close and personal.
Canadian fashion industry heavyweights like FLARE Magazine‘s new editor-in-chief Miranda Purves, her counterpart at FASHION Magazine Bernadette Morra, Holt Renfrew’s Lisa Tant and FLARE fashion director Liz Cabral lent their support to the very worthy cause and stylish event. By the time the last morsel of food was consumed, over $150,000 had been raised in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. A very productive working lunch indeed.

Neiman Marcus, Target and the CFDA announced a rather unexpected but definitely very intriguing holiday collaboration this past July, and now the 50-plus piece collection of men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items has been revealed.
The offerings were designed by 24 CFDA designers, including: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.
The collection includes everything from Rodarte wrapping paper for $7.99 to Alice + Olivia bicycle for $499.99. I’m thinking a quick shopping jaunt south of the border might be required so I can get my hands on a Prabal Gurung bow cape ($79.99) for me, an Eddie Borgo letter opener ($34.99) for the Mister, and a Jason Wu polka dot dress ($59.99) for the daughter I’ve yet to have.
Mark your calendars – the collection will be available in both Neiman Marcus and Target stores and e-commerce sites (neimanmarcus.com ships to Canada!) starting December 1, and is sure to sell out in a flash. Check out the gallery below for the complete collection. What’s on your wish list?

By now we’re rather accustomed to hearing about unexpected collaborations (Valentino for GAP, anyone?), but Neiman Marcus x Target definitely takes the cake. The unlikely duo of retailers announced today the creation of a 50-plus piece collection of limited-edition men’s, women’s, home and children’s gift items by a roster of 24 CFDA members.
The list of designers who have created pieces for the collection is impressive: Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane von Furstenberg, Eddie Borgo, Jason Wu, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese.
Due to hit both retailers’ stores and online shops on December 1, the collection is priced from $7.99 to $499.99, with the majority of items under $60. Not having yet seen a single item, this is already sounding like the collaboration of the year. Prabal? Proenza? Atwood, even? I can’t wait to see what some of my favourite designers have cooked up for Neiman Marcus and Target. Stay tuned!
