Admiring from the Backseat: The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2013 ‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’ Edition

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute held its annual gala last night. The dress code? Punk. And with New York and Hollywood’s boldest names attending, we knew their sartorial choices were going to be a feast for our fashion-obsessed eyes.

From a fabulously punk Sarah Jessica Parker in a printed Giles Deacon design and custom Philip Treacy mohawk headdress to a fabulous but not so punk Jennifer Lawrence in an embellished black Dior gown, the red carpet was quite the scene. Lauren Santo Domingo brought the drama in a Dolce & Gabbana dress with exaggerated sleeves, Emma Watson looked all grown up in a sexy black Prabal Gurung number, and Taylor Tomasi Hill stunned in a printed floral frock with spikes by Thom Browne.

It’s a tie for top honours, though, between a fierce Anja Rubik, who showed up in red leather Anthony Vaccarello, and Rooney Mara, who was a vision in white lace Givenchy (déjà vu?). Who were your favourites on this year’s Met Gala red carpet?

Admiring from the Backseat: Oscars 2013 Edition

Naomi Watts in Armani Privé

After an epic 3.5 hour Academy Awards ceremony tonight and red carpet coverage that was almost as long, the 2013 awards season has sadly come to an end. With stunning silver screen stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain stepping out in incredible gowns by the likes of Armani Privé, Dior Haute Couture  and Oscar de la Renta, however, this year’s awards season definitely went out with a sartorial bang.

Our favourite leading ladies certainly saved their best frocks for last, with most topping their looks at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. From Kerry Washington in pink Miu Miu to Stacy Keibler in metallic Naeem Khan, these are our top 10 best dressed from the 2013 Oscars. Who made your list?

Admiring from the Backseat: Golden Globe Awards 2013 Edition

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen

Golden Globes 2013 turned out to be quite the night! Honourary Backseat Styler D joined us for this year’s festivities and we spent the evening critiquing the red carpet fashions, accusing each other of cheating in the GG pool, and playing Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s Golden Globes drinking game. Lots of controversy, to say the least. So much so, in fact, that we couldn’t even narrow the best dressed field down to 10.

While the red carpet as a whole left much to be desired, favourites like Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen, Anne Hathaway in Chanel and Julianne Moore in Tom Ford were shoo-ins. Ladies in red Jennifer Lawrence (in Christian Dior) and Naomi Watts (in Zac Posen) also made the cut, as did Kerry Washington in an embellished Miu Miu frock. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked drop-dead gorgeous in a bow-adorned Saint Laurent gown, while Julianna Margulies and Michelle Dockery both took risks with their Pucci and Alexandre Vauthier gowns that paid off.

The final spot in our top ten best dressed of the night was a toss-up between Rachel Weisz in a sheer, polka-dotted number by Louis Vuitton (S’s pick) and Katharine McPhee‘s revealing Theyskens’ Theory dress (T’s pick). Rather than settle the issue via a breakdance fight, we decided to expand our list to 11 and call it a night.

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive at 2011 Golden Globe Awards

It’s official, ladies and gents! Sunday marks the beginning of this year’s awards season in Hollywood, and we’re excitedly counting down the days until the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-hosted Golden Globes. After that, it’s going to be a non-stop red carpet glam fest as our favourite stars attend the Globes, the SAGs and finally the Oscars.

We’ve rounded up the 10 actresses we’re most excited to see on the awards show red carpets this season, along with our favourite look of theirs to date.

From stars of the silver screen like Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence to those who’ve graced our televisions this past year like Claire Danes and Julianne Moore, we can’t wait to cover their sartorial choices over the next couple of months. Admiring from the Backseat: 10 Best Red Carpet Looks from 2012

Diane Kruger in custom Nina Ricci at Cannes International Film Festival

From awards shows to movie premieres to fashion parties, it’s been quite a year on the red carpets. We saw new sartorial heroines emerge, like Jennifer Lawrence during her Hunger Games promotional tour, as well as established greats like Michelle Williams and Diane Kruger continue to bring their A games. With stunning look after stunning look to choose from, selecting a short list of the 10 best dressed of 2012 was a near impossible task. With much deliberation, we finally settled on the 10 that made our jaws drop and raised the red carpet bar.

What do you think of our top 10 best dressed of the year – did we nail it, or did we miss some of your favourites? Do tell!

Admiring from the Backseat: Primetime Emmy Awards 2012 Edition

January Jones in Zac Posen

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards took place last night, giving us our first real awards show red carpet fix in several months. Obviously, we were delighted! So much so that we were even happy to see Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Osbourne again…ssshhh, don’t tell anyone.

Our greatest pleasure by far, however, was spotting January Jones in a stunning black Zac Posen number; in fact, there may have been some squealing and jumping up and down. She just looked that fabulous. Ginnifer Goodwin, who’s become a reliable source for gorgeous red carpet looks over the last few years, didn’t disappoint either, donning a floral and vine embellished orange frock by Monique Lhuillier.

We’re now new fans of Mad Men‘s Jessica Pare, who was the picture of classic Hollywood glamour in a custom black-and-white Jason Wu. Julianna Margieles also surprised us, walking the red carpet in a floral-printed green and purple Giambattista Valli gown. Julianne Moore rounds out our Emmys best dressed list; she looked like a ray of sunshine in a long-sleeved yellow Dior Couture gown that complemented her red hair beautifully.

We absolutely loved all the vibrant colours on the Emmys red carpet this year, but it was a head-to-toe black-clad January Jones who came away with the best dressed title by our measure. Who were your sartorial favourites at the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards?

Admiring from the Backseat: Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture

When I spotted photos of Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture at the London premiere of The Dark Knight Rises last night, I literally squealed as if I’d won a prize. Marion and I are on the same wavelength, apparently, because she chose to don the one Dior look I featured as one of the standouts from the Fall 2012 Couture collections. It’s an oddly satisfying feeling for a fashion geek like me.

But this post isn’t really about me. It’s about Marion Cotillard and how incredible she looked in the first dress from Raf Simons’ inaugural outing at Dior to show up on a red carpet. She accessorized her mustard yellow and teal colour-block dress quite perfectly with a red clutch and matching pumps. In fact, I prefer Marion’s look to the runway styling. Definitely a win for both Marion and Raf, wouldn’t you say?

Christian Dior RTW Fall 2010

Style.com

Christian Dior RTW Fall 2010 seemed to be somewhat of a continuation of Dior Haute Couture Spring 2010, with an equestrian storyline tying the two collections together. I adore this collection; from the hats all the way down to the ankle and OTK boots, including all the smart jackets, pretty dresses and cool leather trousers in between. I’d decided to pass on the whole OTK boot trend this season, but I suddenly find myself yearning for a pair…likely at least partially because it’s the only type of boot I can somewhat justify purchasing, since I don’t currently own a pair. Temptations, temptations…

Christian Dior Couture Spring 2010

Some very beautiful pieces in the Dior Spring 2010 couture show – especially the stunning gown on Liu Wen, which I personally favoured over the finale dress (even with the prominent bow, which usually reels me in). No danger of Tavi’s hat stealing the show with this collection. What caught my eye the most though was these gorgeous violet bow sandals with sculpted heels. Once a shoe addict, always a shoe addict it seems.
