On May 3, Toronto Fashion Incubator celebrated its 25th anniversary with a fundraising gala at the Royal Ontario Museum, aptly dubbed TFI25, that was attended by a who’s who of Toronto’s social set and fashion industry and fit for Barbie herself. Chaired by Suzanne Rogers and emceed by a Greta Constantine-clad Jully Black, the evening featured a VIP dinner, a Barbie-inspired celebrity runway show, the annual TFI New Labels design competition fashion show and, of course, an after-party.

After a 6 month long competition, finalists Patrick LarrivéeSid NeigumJameson Kane by Genevieve Pearson and Stanley Capobianco, and [blak] – i by Diego Fuchs and Helder Aguiar showed four very well received collections that made the TFI New Labels judges’ decision that much more difficult to make. “Judges are in big trouble from @SusanAtTFI”, FLARE Magazine‘s Editor-in-Chief Lisa Tant tweeted, ”because we can’t decide and won’t come out.”

Tant was joined on the judging panel by TNT Boutiques’ Arie AssarafToronto Star‘s Derick Chetty, TFI President David Dixon, TFI Executive Director Susan Langdon and the gala’s honorary chair Suzanne Rogers, who donated the $25,000 grand prize. In the end, Edmonton native Sid Neigum was named this year’s TFI New Labels winner, taking home a prize package valued at $60,000, which included a feature in FLARE Magazine and a design studio at the TFI sponsored by Arie Assaraf.

Those weren’t the only prizes up for grabs at TFI25. The Barbie-inspired fashion show featured celebrity models like Dina Pugliese, Tanya Kim and Trish Stratus in designs by VAWKArthur Mendonça, Anastasia Lomonova and more. While past TFI New Labels winner Sarah Nicol of Sar Couture was awarded the $10,000 cash prize, it was actress Tara Spencer-Nairn in VAWK who stole the show with her robotic runway walk, tweeted FASHION Magazine‘s Editor-in-Chief Bernadette Morra.

Barbie by Christian Louboutin

I never really played with Barbies as a little girl, so I’d much prefer to save my $150 for a pair of Louboutins rather than for the Cat Burglar Barbie by Christian Louboutin. Clearly not everyone feels the same way though, as Cat Burglar Barbie is already sold out on Net-a-Porter. If you’re a fan of both Barbie and Christian Louboutin and you’ve been waiting for this collaboration all your life, add it to your NAP wishlist to be given the heads-up when more stock arrives.

Barbie by David Dixon Spring 2010

When the Fall 2009 Barbie by David Dixon line was released at The Bay, I was too busy working or being pregnant to notice. By the time I realized, the amazing grey collarless wool blazer with pleated back I wanted so badly was all out in my size. I vowed not to let this happen again and kept a keen eye on the pieces in the Spring 2010 collection, which even included a few pieces for Ken. While I didn’t see anything for myself, there were definitely some fun, flirty dresses and separates for the Bay St crowd to pick up from The Bay’s Queen St flagship store come spring.
The highlight for me, however, came before the runway presentation at the Barbie Reception, where the Barbie Dance was demonstrated and the 6 new Barbie Fashionistas dolls were unveiled. While I now have my very own Glam doll, I really think I’m more a cross between Cute and Girly. Which Fashionista are you?

Happy Birthday Barbie!

Barbie is turning 50 this year and her friends in the fashion industry are throwing her a helluva party. Who needs Ken when you have David Dixon and Patricia Fields, among others, planning the big soiree?

Until mid-May, The Bay on Queen St in Toronto is paying homage to Barbie with a space dedicated to everything Barbie, including cheeky tees and tanks by David Dixon and Patricia Fields, jewelry by Foxy Originals and Barbie by David Dixon fashions straight from the runway of LG Fashion Week Fall 2009.

Clearly Barbie and all her pinkness isn’t for everyone, but with a sense of humour and some extra coinage in the pocketbook, I could definitely squeeze a few of these pieces into the rotation.

Pieces from the Barbie by David Dixon line will be available at The Bay Queen St sometime in May, though which pieces and at what price point is not yet known to the public. The promise of pink and houndstooth alone is enough to at least entice me into the store, but whether I’m inspired to whip out the wallet remains to be seen.
