Stylin’ from the Backseat: Black Is The New Black

My Margiela for H&M candy wrapper clutch has been sitting untouched in my closet since it came home with me last November, waiting patiently for a chance to come out and play. I finally took it out for its inaugural spin this past weekend and, obviously, it called for a black on black on black outfit.

Salt and pepper bouclé tweed, silver metallics and black leather – a few of my old favourites, all wrapped up neatly in one ensemble. After spending the last year in brighter colours than ever before, this decidedly darker getup felt like a reunion with old friends.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: High Waisted

If someone had predicted a few weeks ago that a pair of high-waisted green shorts would suddenly become My Favourite (Sartorial) Thing In The World, I would have scoffed at the idea. And yet here I am, head over heels in love and completely obsessed with these Proenza shorts I nabbed on sale at The Room.

So much so, in fact, that I wish they came in every colour of the rainbow. They don’t, though, which I suppose is a blessing in disguise; I would’ve chickened out of the green if there had been other, less adventurous options. And then what would I have worn with my first-time-out-of-the-box-and-they-happen-to-match Balenciaga sandals (a Woodbury outlet find!)?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Superhero Kicks

The Mister, baby and me sported matching Superman Converse shoes this past weekend because, you know, that’s just how we do. We’re the biggest Superman fans around, and what better way to show it then through our footwear choices? Exactly.

The rest of my ensemble was a little less heroic looking. Smythe jackets and Balenciaga bags are pretty super, by my measure, but the Converse x DC Comics Chuck Taylors were obviously the source of my superhero powers. Or so I told the little one.

Want a pair too? Enter our giveaway over here for a chance to win some superhero kicks of your own!

Stylin’ from the Backseat: The Mixologist

Holt Renfrew is currently holding a street style contest for the Canadian retailer’s newly launched blog, Holts Muse. Naturally, I had to enter. But what to wear in a sartorial battle with, well, the whole country?

With so many pieces in my closet that I’m currently obsessed with, pulling together just one outfit to represent me and my personal style was a tough assignment. After much deliberation, I stuck with my usual, trusty formula: smart-looking jacket + chic blouse + statement jewelry + fierce shoes + one pop of colour. And red lips, of course!

A caption to my photo was required, and instead of ‘Harbourfront Hoedown’, as T earnestly suggested, I titled my submission ‘The Mixologist’. Why? Because this ensemble combines the unexpected: contrasting patterns and different textures, feminine pieces with masculine touches, and fast fashion with designer items. It’s still only one outfit upon which to judge my street style contributions to the Canadian landscape (I’m so dramatic, I know!), but it’s very me.

Check out my submission in the Holts Muse contest photo album on Facebook here. And throw me a ‘like’ if you happen to – it’d make my day!

Stylin’ from the Backseat: By George!

George Antonopoulos and me

You know that feeling of loving a new purchase so much that you want to wear it right away? I didn’t get that with my leather dress from the OBJECT for Danier line by George Antonopoulos. In fact, I adored it so much that I wanted to save its first outing for a special occasion of sorts, rather than just any ol’ day.

After sitting patiently in my closet for a month and a half, my new leather frock finally got its inaugural call to duty for none other than the opening night of this season’s LG Fashion Week. With the Spring 2012 collection from Arthur Mendonça, for whom Antonopoulos serves as Fashion Director, on the agenda, I thought it the perfect opportunity to take the dress out for a spin.

The Alexander McQueen winged booties I paired my OBJECT dress with were also a piece that had a delayed debut after I purchased them last winter. Do you save particularly beloved new purchases for special occasions too?

Coveting from the Backseat: Balenciaga Fall 2011 Runway Ankle Cuff Pumps

At the beginning of every season, there’s always one shoe that captures my heart and instantly becomes an obsession until I successfully acquire them. The last few seasons, they’ve been the Alexander McQueen winged booties and Charlotte Olympia “Banana Is My Business” pumps; each of these pairs of shoes still make my heart go pitter-patter every time I take them out for a spin, so I know I done did good with those purchases.

This Fall, a shoe had yet to take that top spot on my accessories wish list, though there had been some serious contenders. I’ve been coveting the Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem velvet platform pumps and the YSL python Tribute sandals with snake ornaments for sure, but neither of these has had the effect of turning me into an online shoe stalker.

This weekend, however, I finally stumbled upon the shoes of my dreams (for right now), and they are fierce, ladies and gents. Everyone, meet Balenciaga‘s to-die-for, straight off the Fall 2011 runway pumps. The ultra-pointy toe, the skinny stiletto heel, the contrast ankle cuff…these babies couldn’t be more up my alley. They also couldn’t be further from my closet right now, but I’m already styling outfits in my head.

What’s your dream shoe for Fall?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Cougars and Plaid

Matchstick sent over a pair of Cougar Boots a while back, and I’ve been waiting patiently to debut them. They’re not my usual style, but a girl can’t wear shoes like these all day, every day. As much as I love my 4″+ stilettos, my feet need a rest once in a while, especially when I’m chasing my son around. Enter my brand spankin’ new, limited edition Pillow Boots.

The temperatures dropped this past weekend, so I finally took them out for a spin. Boy, was I surprised – these babies are the most comfortable boots I’ve ever put on my feet, hands down. When the folks at Cougar say ‘pillow’, they mean it.

These exclusive Pillow Boots are an updated version of the Canadian classic first introduced in 1976, and only 900 pairs have been produced. I didn’t wear Pillow Boots growing up, but I sure am glad I found them now. Better late than never, right?

My Nikon D90 is a semi-permanent fixture hanging from my shoulder these days. Don’t be fooled though – my photo skills are self-taught and, therefore, rather non-existent. It annoys the heck out of the Mister that I hold down the button and take 3-5 frames, even when shooting inanimate, still objects. It frustrates me too that I have to edit hundreds of photos where only a fraction of them turn out to be post-worthy. I just haven’t had the time to take a photography course, so shoot me (pun attended).

But my Nikon sure helps me look the part of a professional photog…until you actually see my shots, that is.

Dear Santa…

Dear Santa:

Hope all is well with you, Mrs. Claus, the reindeer and the elves up in the North Pole! I know we only just saw each other at Mr. Backseat Styler’s company Christmas party last week, but I thought I’d write to you to remind you of our discussion at the time. As you know, I’ve been a tad overindulgent this past year, so I probably only deserve a lump of coal in my stocking. However, should you decide – in all your infinite, jolly wisdom – to give me a free pass this year, I have taken the liberty of listing out what I would most like to see in my stocking. In the unlikely event that 3 days is not sufficient time for the elves to cobble together these items, I’ve also included where each item can be purchased. The prices I’ve listed don’t include the Kris Kringle discount though – I’m sure you could do much better.

Coveting from the Backseat: Balenciaga Classic Triple Tour Bracelet

I’ve been cheating on Chanel lately. Last month I made my first foray into the world of Balenciaga with the purchase of an anthracite Work bag, and now I find myself drooling over this classic triple tour bracelet to match. I wonder if Santa’s elves are versed in Balenciaga…off to add this beauty to my wish list before I mail it off!
