As occasional style bloggers, we’ve come to a less than obvious conclusion: style blogging isn’t easy. Put on some clothes, snap a photo or two and call it a day, right? Not quite.
So much thought goes into the production of a personal style shot that will keep readers coming back for more. The look: arm party or no arm party? Ankle booties or platform pumps? Hair up or down? The location: this graffiti wall or that one? Open field or busy city street? The pose: look straight at the camera or whimsically away from it? Lean in this doorway or sit on that park bench? It’s enough to make your head spin, but those who do it well have it down to a fine art.
That’s why this year we left the personal style blogging to those who do it like they mean it, and launched The Canadian Street Style Lookbook. There are some seriously stylish folks across our fair nation, and we wanted to introduce them to you. And, as 2012 comes to an end, we decided to take on the impossible task of rounding up our 10 favourite looks from the year.
From fabulous Lookbook regulars like Nelia and sisters Caillianne and Samantha to less frequent but no less chic contributors like Anya and Sydney, we’re in awe of just how sartorially gifted these 11 bloggers are. We bow down to your abilities to keep the outfits creative, the backdrops fresh and your bodies perfectly posed from week to week.
To all who were featured in the Lookbook this past year, thank you for the incredible blog fodder. We can’t wait to showcase more of our favourite bloggers, as well as some fresh new faces, in 2013!

Samantha Beckerman of Beckerman Bite Plate, Toronto
This week, more is definitely more – more texture, more colour, more personality.
The Beckerman sisters showcased their incredible new pieces from the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection. Let’s face it, this H&M collaboration is so good that pretty much anyone wearing any piece from the collection would be declared the best dressed in town. Caillianne’s metal chain ring necklace lets you know that if you get in her way she will mess. you. up. (But seriously, Caillianne and the rest of the Beckermans are THE sweetest people ever!). Samantha’s belt jacket is, in her own words, “UN-REAL.” Or was it “AWESOMESAUCE?” Either way, she looks fierce beyond words, and we probably wouldn’t want to mess with her either.
Anya looked drop-dead gorgeous when she met Nicola Formachetti, creative director of MUGLER, at The Room Vancouver recently. I have to say that hers is my favourite look to date, from the very first The Canadian Street Style Lookbook post until now – and we can’t even see the shoes (they’re fabulous, I’m sure). Her Max Mara top is elegant, dramatic, sexy…it’s DIVINE! High praise, yes, but definitely well deserved.

Samantha and Caillianne Beckerman of Beckerman Bite Plate, Toronto
It’s been quite the eventful week in fashion, and Canadian style bloggers have been spotted everywhere, decked out in the most fabulous prints, no less.
Anya sported a stunning floral printed blouse by Sandro at Fashion’s Night Out in Vancouver, while Jay looked BA (my friend – and perhaps only my friend – uses this acronym to mean “bad ass”) in Givenchy while in New York for fashion week.
At Toronto Life’s celebration of the city’s most stylish, Nelia paired a striking Clover Canyon tunic with a dazzling emerald statement necklace. Samantha, on a late-night ice cream run with twin Caillianne, was all about the prints too, and a fantastic new blue ‘do.

Toronto’s most fashionable folks made our gig as part-time street style snappers rather easy this past year. We spent little time trolling the streets and, instead, had the pleasure of shooting the city’s most impeccably dressed at the very best industry events and charity galas the city had to offer. These 10 shots are our favourite from the year, and they feature 11 stunning women in ensembles that made us drop our jaws and shamelessly chase after them for photos.
And on that note, thank you to all of our street style subjects from the past 12 months, included in this post or not, who graciously allowed us to interrupt conversations with long lost friends or accost them as they were just biting into an hors d’oeuvre, and who pretended not to notice when we started snapping with our lens cap still on. We look forward to shooting all of you again in 2012!

A special shout out to Anya Georgijevic, a finalist in the Best Fashion or Beauty Blog category for I’m The It Girl, and her to-die-for Nicholas Kirkwood laser-cut booties. Because while everyone else in attendance had their eye on the prize (a P&G Beauty & Grooming Award trophy, that is), I was ogling the swanky shoes on their feet. And on that note, check out the gallery below for photos of some of the evening’s chicest looks.

VAWK’s Creative Director Sunny Fong, me, and VAWK’s Business Director Ben Barry
Back in December, I snagged one of the most coveted pieces available at the VAWK sample sale, a Fall 2010 runway jacket that instantly became the fiercest piece of outerwear in my closet, taking that title from such heavyweights as a long, white belted trench by Burberry and a 3.1 Phillip Lim fur collar leather bomber. Three months then passed as my beloved jacket sat idly in my closet, waiting for its big debut.
I’d decided early on that I’d save the jacket for VAWK’s Fall 2011 show, but with it already having been so expertly styled by Tricia Campbell Hall for the Fall 2010 runway, the pressure was on to represent for VAWK but also to make the jacket my own. In the end, I paired the jacket with my most prized accessories, the Alexander McQueen Fall 2010 winged booties also making their first outing and the Chanel crocodile flap bag I’ve been carrying nonstop lately. I’m no Tricia Campbell Hall, but I think I did quite alright styling myself, wouldn’t you say? *wink*
