Jessica Chastain in Roland Mouret
It’s a two-awards show weekend and we red carpet-obsessed folks here at The Backseat Stylers couldn’t be more delighted! With Hollywood’s finest being fêted at the BAFTA Film Awards over on the other side of the pond and the music industry’s most talented gathering for the Grammy Awards in L.A., we knew we were in for a treat – and the BAFTAs have certainly delivered.
By now we’ve seen the same handful or so of nominated actresses trot out their sartorial best at the Golden Globes, SAGs and more, but it seems they still have plenty of gorgeous gowns up their couture sleeves. At the top of our BAFTAs best dressed are Jessica Chastain in a stunning cobalt blue Roland Mouret, Amy Adams in an ethereal Elie Saab gown, and Marion Cotillard in a bright yellow frock by Dior. Rounding out our top 5 are Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway, who both took risks with embellished numbers by Dior and Burberry respectively that definitely paid off.
Next stop for these leading ladies? The Oscars on February 24! We simply cannot wait.

Jessica Chastain in Erdem Resort 2013 at 85th Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon
With the Oscars just around the corner on February 24 and the competition to dress the leading ladies no doubt heating up, there’s one designer in particular we’re really rooting for this year: Erdem Moralioglu. The Canadian-born, London-based purveyor of ladylike, floral-print dresses has been a surprise favourite so far this awards season, and we’re absolutely delighted for him.
From the gorgeous floral print gown donned by Marion Cotillard to the 2013 BAFTA Awards Season Tea Party to the lovely embroidered shift dress with lace sleeves that Jessica Chastain wore to the 85th Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon, Erdem has been on a winning streak this month that we’re really, really hoping culminates in an Oscars red carpet appearance. Wouldn’t you agree, Rachel Zoe? Kate Young? Fingers crossed!
Which Erdem look has been your favourite so far this awards season?

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2013
The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the second major stop of the 2013 awards season, was held last night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. We sat dutifully in front of our television watching the red carpet pre-show, almost threw said television out the window when our local channel aired an interior design reality competition rather than the first half hour of the SAGs, and then finally caught up on all the awards, fashion and awkward on-stage banter in time to bring you this post.
We were underwhelmed by the decidedly lacklustre red carpet (remember last year‘s fabulous looks from Emma, Michelle and Zoe?), but still managed to cobble together a tight list of our 5 best dressed of the evening. Anne Hathaway looked lovely in a fresh-off-the-runway Giambattista Valli frock, as did Jennifer Garner in a gold, embellished number by Oscar de la Renta. Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman sported their usual, glamourous fare, this time from Marchesa and Vivienne Westwood respectively, while Kerry Washington was the only leading lady to take a sartorial risk that we think paid off with an unexpected Rodarte design.
Did you catch the 2013 SAG Awards? Who made your best dressed list?

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen
Golden Globes 2013 turned out to be quite the night! Honourary Backseat Styler D joined us for this year’s festivities and we spent the evening critiquing the red carpet fashions, accusing each other of cheating in the GG pool, and playing Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s Golden Globes drinking game. Lots of controversy, to say the least. So much so, in fact, that we couldn’t even narrow the best dressed field down to 10.
While the red carpet as a whole left much to be desired, favourites like Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen, Anne Hathaway in Chanel and Julianne Moore in Tom Ford were shoo-ins. Ladies in red Jennifer Lawrence (in Christian Dior) and Naomi Watts (in Zac Posen) also made the cut, as did Kerry Washington in an embellished Miu Miu frock. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked drop-dead gorgeous in a bow-adorned Saint Laurent gown, while Julianna Margulies and Michelle Dockery both took risks with their Pucci and Alexandre Vauthier gowns that paid off.
The final spot in our top ten best dressed of the night was a toss-up between Rachel Weisz in a sheer, polka-dotted number by Louis Vuitton (S’s pick) and Katharine McPhee‘s revealing Theyskens’ Theory dress (T’s pick). Rather than settle the issue via a breakdance fight, we decided to expand our list to 11 and call it a night.
Who were your best dressed of the 2013 Golden Globes?

Anne Hathaway in Chanel

Naomi Watts in Zac Posen

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Saint Laurent

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive at 2011 Golden Globe Awards
It’s official, ladies and gents! Sunday marks the beginning of this year’s awards season in Hollywood, and we’re excitedly counting down the days until the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-hosted Golden Globes. After that, it’s going to be a non-stop red carpet glam fest as our favourite stars attend the Globes, the SAGs and finally the Oscars.
This year’s batch of nominees include leading ladies who not only have serious acting chops, but impeccable style to match (or, at least, the most talented stylists on their payrolls). We’ve rounded up the 10 actresses we’re most excited to see on the awards show red carpets this season, along with our favourite look of theirs to date.
From stars of the silver screen like Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence to those who’ve graced our televisions this past year like Claire Danes and Julianne Moore, we can’t wait to cover their sartorial choices over the next couple of months. Valentino, Dior, Elie Saab…gorgeous gowns are coming to a glamourous red carpet near you. Stay tuned!

January Jones in Carolina Herrara Pre-Fall 2011 at the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards
The end of a year always brings about an overabundance of ‘best of’ lists, so of course we had to contribute one of our own. Putting together a list of the top ten red carpet looks of 2011 was a surprisingly easy task. These 9 women – 8 actresses and 1 real life princess – and their 10 ensembles (Emma Stone is listed twice!) were clear standouts in our eyes. So much so that we’re not even going to bother to explain our choices – these stunning looks speak for themselves. Plus, we’re still recovering from our holiday turkey feast.
From Anne Hathaway‘s sequin Armani Privé to Cate Blanchett‘s lavender Givenchy, these are the types of clothes that make us wish that we too were Hollywood actresses or fairy tale princesses whose job descriptions included gracing red carpets in couture. But, alas, we are not…yet. So until such day that fact changes, we’ll settle for daydreaming about strutting our stuff in January Jones‘ gold lace gown by Carolina Herrera and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge‘s blush sequin dress by Jenny Packham instead.

I know what you’re thinking. Another white lace dress, S, really?
I know, I know. I haven’t forgotten that I already posted Jamie King and Alexa Chung in white lace frocks this past month; I just couldn’t resist. Anne Hathaway in this hairpin lace mermaid sheath dress at the One Day premiere in London this week is simply perfection. Plus, the ensemble is Alexander McQueen from head to toe: the dress (Resort 2012), the shoes, the clutch…how could I not post? Hathaway herself is such a delight, too.
I knew you’d understand.

There was a time, I will confess, when I thought Anne Hathaway was a terrible actor who probably wouldn’t amount to much as a Hollywood actress; this was around the time I made the unfortunate decision to watch The Princess Diaries. That first impression stuck with me for some time – I remember questioning why she, of all available actresses, was cast in The Devil Wears Prada. It seems though, that in the last few years, she’s proven herself to be quite adept at her craft (see Rachel Getting Married) and has also become a consistent performer on the red carpet.
Take last night’s Golden Globes, for example. While I was left largely unimpressed by most of the dresses I spotted in the red-carpet coverage and during the awards show itself, Anne Hathaway alone blew me away in a stunning sequin gown from the Armani Privé Fall 2010 haute couture collection. The colour, the silhouette, the sparkle from the paillettes – I loved it! I didn’t even hate the nude fabric in the back.
