Admiring from the Backseat: Taraji P. Henson in Mary Katrantzou

There’s something about Mary that I just can’t get enough of. London-based designer Mary Katrantzou‘s colourful printed dress designs have become an obsession of late, and I’ve been coveting her Spring 2013 collection ever since it started hitting stores. My latest wish list item? The Starsailor print jersey dress, which I’ve been cyber-vising for weeks now.

That would explain my exclamation of “She’s wearing my dress!!” to T last night, when I spotted a photo of Taraji P. Henson at the New York screening of Mud. The Benjamin Button actress paired the whimsical frock with a pair of quirky printed yellow pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood, also a favourite of mine. In short, Ms. Henson wore the spring ensemble of my dreams.

Want the whole outfit from head to toe? The dress retails for $1,045 and the shoes for $695, both at Net-a-porter.

Kate Young for Target Fêted by Michelle Williams and Maggie Gyllenhaal

Michelle Williams

Another week, another Target launch party attended by some very bold face names.

Last night, the likes of actresses Michelle Williams, Kate Mara and Maggie Gyllenhaal attended a bash in New York in honour of celebrity stylist Kate Young‘s design collaboration with the discount department store retailer. Each walked the red carpet in a look from the pocketbook-friendly eveningwear collection.

The offerings are looking rather cute, but that might be the Michelle Williams fan in me talking. Kate Young for Target launches online and in stores on April 14 – check out the complete lookbook here.

Admiring from the Backseat: Diane Kruger

This impossibly long winter may be dragging the best of us down, sartorially speaking, but style pros like Diane Kruger are still going strong. The actress stepped out in an effortlessly glam ensemble for dinner in New York with her boyfriend Joshua Jackson this week.

She chose a chic white collared shirt and black satin pants pairing for the occasion, topping it off with a delightfully ostentatious fur coat. The best part of her outfit though was the bright red Chanel lego clutch, which added a pop of colour and whimsical touch. I’d happily take one of those in every colour, please.

Admiring from the Backseat: Canadian Screen Awards 2013 Edition

Bernadette Morra and Jeanne Beker

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television’s first annual Canadian Screen Awards were held in Toronto last night at The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts and broadcast live on television. The awards, which have replaced the previously separate Genie and Gemini Awards, recognize excellence in film, television and digital media productions.

Last night’s broadcast gala and industry-only soirees held earlier in the week saw Canada’s most talented actors and television personalities walk the red carpet, many in designs by local designers. Presenter Tara Spencer-Nairn donned a fierce leather number by VAWK, one of our favourite looks from the Spring 2013 collection. Kristin Kreuk and Bernadette Morra each sported Arthur Mendonça; the Beauty and the Beast actress paired an unexpected printed jumpsuit with jewelry by  Toronto-based designers Shay Lowe Jewellery and Niki & Lola, while the FASHION Magazine editor-in-chief sported a stunning magenta cocktail dress.

Morra presented fashion icon and former Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker, decked out in Chanel, with the Academy Achievement Award for exceptional contributions to Canadian television. With the national fashion industry well-represented, the first ever Canadian Screen Awards was a glamorous affair indeed.

Admiring from the Backseat: Mélanie Laurent in Burberry Prorsum

Mélanie Laurent, best known for her role in Inglourious Basterds, attended the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2013 runway show yesterday in a stunning trench coat from the brand’s spring collection. This is blogworthy on 2 fronts: (a) it’s Mélanie Laurent and we love her, and (b) I now suddenly need, want, have to have a coloured trench for spring, and a lovely shade of red just might be the colour of choice.

From Adele to Jay-Z, all of our favourite musicians gathered in L.A. for the 55th Grammy Awards tonight. We dutifully watched the red carpet coverage in fast-forward and scoured the internet for our 5 best dressed of the evening. At the very top, by a long shot, was Rihanna, who completely knocked our socks off in a custom red Azzedine Alaia gown. More of this, please, Riri.

Taylor Swift and Kelly Rowland also upped the glam factor on the Grammys red carpet, choosing stunning J. Mendel and Georges Chakra designs for the occasion. Janelle Monae and Beyoncé, both in pants, held their own in a sea of evening gowns, also making our best dressed list.

Admiring from the Backseat: BAFTA Film Awards 2013 Edition

Jessica Chastain in Roland Mouret

It’s a two-awards show weekend and we red carpet-obsessed folks here at The Backseat Stylers couldn’t be more delighted! With Hollywood’s finest being fêted at the BAFTA Film Awards over on the other side of the pond and the music industry’s most talented gathering for the Grammy Awards in L.A., we knew we were in for a treat – and the BAFTAs have certainly delivered.

By now we’ve seen the same handful or so of nominated actresses trot out their sartorial best at the Golden Globes, SAGs and more, but it seems they still have plenty of gorgeous gowns up their couture sleeves. At the top of our BAFTAs best dressed are Jessica Chastain in a stunning cobalt blue Roland Mouret, Amy Adams in an ethereal Elie Saab gown, and Marion Cotillard in a bright yellow frock by Dior. Rounding out our top 5 are Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway, who both took risks with embellished numbers by Dior and Burberry respectively that definitely paid off.

Next stop for these leading ladies? The Oscars on February 24! We simply cannot wait.

With the Oscars just around the corner on February 24 and the competition to dress the leading ladies no doubt heating up, there’s one designer in particular we’re really rooting for this year: Erdem Moralioglu.
