3.1 Phillip Lim for Target to Hit Stores This Fall

It’s turning out to be a busy year for Target on the designer collaboration front. First Prabal Gurung, then Kate Young, and now? 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Yes, you read right: the popular New York-based contemporary designer (and one of our favourites!) has created a limited edition collection of men’s and women’s apparel and accessories for the discount department store chain. “Since an early age, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of design evolution,” Lim said in a press release. “One of the reasons I wanted to collaborate with Target is because I felt that together we could create a collection that would inspire – one that is modern and chic, but still very accessible.”

The travel-friendly line-up will feature over 100 items priced from $19.99 to $299.99. The collection will launch on September 15, and will be available in most Target locations in the US and Canada as well as on target.com. Check out the sneak peek video here and watch this space for more on 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target in the coming months!

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Cable Knit

When it comes to sweaters, I’d say the chunkier, the better, and it doesn’t get much chunkier than this 3.1 Phillip Lim find I snagged a few seasons ago. 3D cable knit is what the designer dubbed it, and the effect is rather eye-catching.

Even my 3-year old is a fan. “I like your sweater, mummy,” he told me with an admiring look this past weekend. “When I’m big, I’m going to wear it, OK?” At least he asked – that’s more than I get from T sometimes. I kid, I kid.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: For the Love of Peplum

A move to a new home and the launch of a new blog series, A Peek in the Backseat, have had me digging into the deepest, darkest corners of my closet of late. I’ve found all sorts of gems I’d forgotten about, including this 3.1 Phillip Lim peplum dress I purchased over three years ago.

I took it out for its inaugural spin recently and fell in love with the ladylike frock all over again. Here I thought I was all peplum’d out thanks to the biggest fashion trend of 2012, but it turns out I’ve always been partial to peplums, and always will be.

What wardrobe treasures have you rediscovered lately?

Coveting from the Backseat: 3.1 Phillip Lim ‘31 Hour’ Bag

When it comes to handbags, it’s never love at first sight for me. Instead, it’s usually a slow sizzle that starts with indifference and ends with me whipping out my bank card in a hurry. It can take me months, years even, to warm up to a bag. My purse purchases are few and far between these days, so if I’m going to be taking the leap, I have to love, love, love it.

When Phillip Lim introduced his new ‘31 Hour’ bag last Fall, I wasn’t sold on it; it seemed so unexciting and uninspired. But I’m feeling a shift in my feelings towards it. What once looked bland and boring to me is now chic and minimalist. I sense I’m on the brink of falling in love. I’m not the only one, either: WWD reported last week that 3.1 Phillip Lim bags are selling very well at Saks and Barneys. I think it’s time I jump on the bandwagon.

The 3.1 Phillip Lim ‘31 Hour’ bag is available on the brand’s new e-shop (U.S. only) for $750, but if you order by Monday, April 23 with the 20% off discount code N31R5WQ67T6, it’s $600. Now how can you resist that?

Coveting from the Backseat: 3.1 Phillip Lim ‘Pashli’ Bag

I’m a huge Phillip Lim fan. His clothing designs are always at the top of my wish list season after season, and some of the most beloved pieces in my closet, everything from a leather jacket to a sequin dress, are by him. You’d think then that when he turned his attention to leather accessories last year, I’d have been all over it.

I wasn’t. Lim’s ‘Pashli’ satchel was embraced as a new It Bag of sorts, but I was feeling rather meh (yes, that’s the technical term) about it. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but it was lacking that oomph I need to see if I’m going to be handing over my credit card. I wrote the Pashli off.

Fast forward a few months to my online window shopping session last night. I’m innocently surfing the new handbag arrivals on my favourite e-retailers when bam! I suddenly spot a bag I want, need, have to have right now. The newest object of my affections? The Pashli. Say what? It seems that all this satchel needed to finally lure me in was a paint job. Phillip Lim has produced his prize bag design in fresh new colours for Spring, and suddenly I really, really want one. But in blue, white or colourblocked? Decisions, decisions…

Navy and white available at Saks.com for $875. Tri-colour version available at Barneys.com for $925.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: A Girl’s Girl

said the other day that I was going to be breaking out the flouncy skirts again – silly, self-imposed age limitations be damned – and I meant it! Just to show how much, I fished my beloved Erin Fetherston skirt out of the depths of my closet and went on a skipping and dancing spree. Because how could I not, with my flounciest skirt and best crimson heels on? There may or may not have been some leaping action, too, but since I have yet to perfect the model jump you see in Vogue all the time, those photos shall remain un-posted.

Coveting from the Backseat: 3.1 Phillip Lim Raglan Leather Sleeved Top

With Fall ad campaigns jumping out from the pages of September issues and lookbooks arriving in my inbox, I’m starting to feel ready to transition to a new season. Cooler weather means that fabrics I stored for the summer get to come out and play again, and I’m most excited about putting leather back into the rotation. With leather shorts, pants, a dress, and jackets of course, already in my closet, what I’m looking to throw into the mix this Fall is a leather top.

Enter this 3.1 Phillip Lim raglan top with leather sleeves. The combination of the two fabrics and contrasting colours brings college football to mind, which is oddly appealing to a very non-athletic me. I can already imagine pairing this top with my Thakoon pants and Chloé wedges, staples in my Fall wardrobe last year.

And that’s the key for me this time around: investing in fresh, new pieces that will work seamlessly with what I’ve already got in my closet for years to come. This top definitely fits the bill. Though the price, a steep $725, not so much. I’ll have to work on that part.

What do you have your eye on for Fall?

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Cold as Ice

3.1 Phillip Lim sweater / Club Monaco faux leather shorts / Club Monaco leather gloves / Burberry boots / Hue tights / Make Up For Ever makeup

Only the certifiably insane would wear shorts, leather or not, in below-freezing temperatures, so I guess that qualifies me for institutionalization. I couldn’t help myself though – the sweater I’d just snagged at 90% off, the shorts at 50% off and the leather gloves at 80% off, and I couldn’t wait to pair them all together. And even though I was chilled to the bone, there was something so serene and beautiful about the frozen lake - it’s the type of quiet moment that only the winter can bring to an otherwise busy Harbourfront.

Stylin’ from the Backseat: Pilfered Cargo

McQ cardigan / Forever 21 tank top / 3.1 Phillip Lim leather jacket / J Brand cargos / Chloé wedge booties / Make Up For Ever make-up

I’m chained to a desk Monday to Friday, so I’m used to living in dress pants, with some respite on the weekends via my jeans. Over the last 6 months or so, since I ramped up the personal style posts, I’ve become a bit more creative. Still no booty shorts for me, but I’ve happily added patterned leggings, frilly skirts and comfy but chic jumpers to the wardrobe. One of my best discoveries, though, has been these J Brand Houlihan skinny cargos. They’re a great alternative to jeans and leggings, can be dressed up or down, and fit like a glove. Oh, and I got them on fantastic sale from Revolve!

This whole ensemble, in fact, is like a greatest hits album of my shopping triumphs over the last few years. From the leather jacket via Barneys to the studded cardigan via the White Space at the Bay to the wedge boots via Saks, all were purchased on significant sale after much patience on my part. Knowing I got a fantastic deal always makes me enjoy wearing a piece that much more. So there you have it – I’m a self-confessed sale-aholic who shows no signs of imminent recovery! Any other addicts out there?
