The bi-annual Hermès silk and accessories charity sale to benefit multiple sclerosis research at St. Michael’s Hospital was held this past Thursday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and it seemed that every fashionista in the city was there hoping to nab some very coveted Hermès silk and leather goods at heavily discounted prices. Being rather new to the scarf scene and having a collection that left much to be desired (I bought my first scarf at a vintage sale last week), I was determined not to leave the sale on Thursday without my very first Hermès scarf.
Once I had successfully survived the incredibly long lineups to get into the sale and was let loose on the goods, all that was standing in the way of me and my first Hermès scarf was the busy crowds. Lucky for me, I am quite adept at navigating through crowds and am a sufficiently seasoned shopper to know to grab first, decide later. Take a few extra seconds to decide whether or not to pick that scarf up and – poof! – it’s in the hands of someone else. So I grabbed as I went, and next thing you knew I had at least 15 scarves in my hands and a purchasing limit of 5 to contend with. Choosing just 5 from so many beautiful scarves was not at all a simple task that was only made more difficult by the facts that (a) I am an indecisive Libra, (b) I had been left to my own devices by my usual shopping companions who devastatingly could not attend the sale, and (c) I could not help but look and re-look at the offerings on the tables just to make sure I had not missed something fabulous, despite the many scarves already weighing down my arms.
Difficult as it was, and only after a long and arduous decision-making process, I finally managed to whittle the pile down. After my long and harrowing adventure, I managed to walk out of my very first Hermès charity sale the proud owner of not one, not two, but five Hermès scarves of varying colours and styles that I am delighted to add to my starter collection. Photos are forthcoming, but for now I shall post just this one photo from the Hermès website of the aqua Astrologie scarf that I’m hoping can add a gorgeous shot of colour to my summer outfits over the next few months.
Having overcome significant obstacles (i.e. lineups, crowds, my own indecisiveness, etc.) to get to my new scarves, I have just one remaining challenge…to learn how to tie them!
