Hermès Charity Sale Scarf Extravaganza – Toronto 2011 Edition

Pelages et Camouflages (Spring 2010)

I have a reputation for being sale-obsessed.

While that’s a fairly accurate assessment of me, I’d like to set the record straight on one point: I do have standards (and other hobbies). You won’t find me trolling through garage sales on Saturday mornings (I enjoy my sleep way too much), I won’t line up for a measly 10% off (I’m looking at you Aritzia), and I can’t stand warehouse sales full of crap no one wants at any price. Of course, I wasn’t always so choosy; I’ve just learned, often the hard way, that not all sales are created equal. Being a seasoned sale shopper, I’ve uncovered, over the past few years, the holy trinity of Toronto sales: the clearance sales at TNT, the end-of-season sales at The Room at the Bay, and the holy grail of sales for some – Hermès’ biennual A Special Silk and Accessories Sale in support of multiple sclerosis research at St. Michael’s Hospital.

If you’ve read about my antics or seen my loot from the last Hermès charity sale, you’ll know I had a grand old time – so much fun, actually, that I couldn’t wait for the sale to return! After a two-year absence that felt like an eternity to me, the Hermès sale finally returned to Toronto last week. Having had two whole years to develop our plan of attack, J, M and me got up at an ungodly hour on May 5th and joined the short queue that had already begun outside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in the dark of night. I was 12th in line, and I must say that it’s quite comforting to know that there are at least 11 people in this city who are more insane than I am!

Fast forward a few hours and we were smack dab in the middle of a frenzy that only an Hermès sale could create. Much of what happened after we stepped through the doors of that sale room was a blur – of beautiful silks, sharp elbows and hurried decisions, that is. I had my game face on, snagging some bracelets early on and then shifting focus to the scarves. Thanks to some wise counsel from J and M, I whittled two armfuls of scarves down to a manageable five 90×90 classics that came home with me. I’m in love!

I’d say I did quite well – just as good, if not better, than my last Hermès sale outing. True to form, though, mere hours after I departed the sale I was already planning for the next one in another two years. Aahhh, the thrill of the sale hunt. In the meantime, I’ve got 5 lovely new scarves I can’t wait to play with!

Did you go to the sale? If so, share your loot!

xx, S
