Jason Wu has been hard at work expanding his business of late; in the past year alone, he’s launched an accessories line, gotten into the bridal business, and designed two capsule collections for TSE, in addition to his main ready-to-wear line. His latest venture, announced today, I would’ve never guessed: Wu is collaborating with Brazilian footwear brand Melissa on a capsule collection of plastic shoes due to hit stores next Spring.
The Melissa + Jason Wu collection will feature two styles, both classic Melissa designs that have been customized by Wu. The designer has added a Miss Wu owl logo and bow to the Ultragirl ballet flats, and a gold sunburst accent, seen in his Fall 2011 RTW collection, to the Lady Dragon peep-toe slingbacks. The insoles of both shoes are also lined with a printed lace, which will be a familiar detail to fans of Wu’s footwear designs. Both Melissa + Jason Wu styles will be available in a variety of colours, including black, burgundy, nude and transparent gray.
“It was really interesting for me to explore design possibilities with plastic,” Wu explained. “I wanted to take advantage of the materials I was given, make it all completely functional and waterproof and yet still remain extremely sophisticated.” Both designs are undeniably adorable, but sophisticated? I’ll reserve judgment until I see these plastic shoes in person come Spring.

Those pink flats are so incredible cute! Haha Melissa shoes always stand out to me with the cute factor, but something about the plastic…it’s fun, but not really…refined enough for my tastes at least, haha. Perhaps with the right outfit, they might add some playful irony I think!
