It’s not every day that an e-mail lands in my inbox inviting me to breakfast with the CEO of anything, really, so when such an invitation arrived with the offer of morning coffee with the head honcho at one of my favourite retailers, Intermix, I was so in. The chance to preview the new Toronto boutique – the US chain’s first international store – before it’s grand opening and pick the brain of CEO Khajak Keledjian was definitely worth the early wakeup call.
Bright and early yesterday I made the short trek to 130 Mink Mile Bloor Street West, where I found a shiny new boutique just waiting for me to come shop. Filled to the brim with classics like the Proenza Schouler PS1 bags in a rainbow of colours and edgy transitional pieces like wine-coloured Sergio Rossi platform pumps, the store was a hotbed of temptation for a shopaholic like me. Somehow I managed to keep my wits about me as I chatted with Keledjian among the racks of very covetable clothing and accessories, all projecting a decidedly fierce vibe.
“Toronto has…polish (and sophistication),” he explained, “but at the same time, we’re still keeping the edge of New York. Our polish is…much edgier than whatever’s (already) in existence (here in Toronto). We’re pushing the envelope a little bit.”
And I’m ready for it. In fact, a portion of my imaginary Fall budget has already been earmarked for Intermix. That’s right, caramel leather jeans of my dreams, I’m coming back for you!
Intermix Toronto officially opens for business today. Check out the retailer’s full designer list here.
