The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 21, 2013 Edition

Krystin Lee of Suburban Faux Pas, Toronto

Ever since a beloved pair of fruit pumps entered S’s life, we’ve had a special place in our hearts for similarly whimsical, standout pieces, and it seems we’re not the only ones.

This week, both Krystin and Tash donned voluminous, summery frocks with bold, fruit-themed prints. Krystin styled her banana-leaf maxi with an oversized sequin clutch and gladiator sandals for a chic day to night look. Tash decided to go matchy-matchy, pairing her blue and yellow lemon print mullet dress with a metallic gold clutch and – what else? – blue suede shoes, a cheeky look perfect for a night on the town.

Bananas and lemons never looked this good.

Spotted from the Backseat: Mad Hot Ballet Gala 2013 Edition

On June 12, 2013, The National Ballet of Canada held its annual fundraising gala, Mad Hot Ballet: Dangerous Love, a Carmen-inspired affair at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Hosted by CBC’s Jian Ghomeshi, the soirée featured a ballet performance programmed by Artistic Director Karen Kain, a Carmen-themed cocktail reception, as well as dinner and dancing on the Four Seasons Centre stage.

Guests, who included ballet dancer Sonia Rodriguez, FASHION editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra and Toronto Standard‘s Sabrina Maddeaux, sported their very best ballet-attending attire. With Carmen for the evening’s theme, partygoers chose gorgeous frocks by the likes of Chanel, Lucian Matis, and Lanvin for H&M for the occasion. Both on and offstage, Mad Hot Ballet was a feast for the eyes.

Check out the gallery below for 21 of our favourite looks from the evening.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 14, 2013 Edition

Alyssa Lau of Ordinary Peoples, Edmonton

Each week, we dutifully stop by a long, long list of Canadian style blogs to cull the most sartorially inspired personal style images from the past 7 days. The ones that make the cut are those that jump out at us from our laptop screen and make us us shriek “LOVE. IT!!!“, “Sooo good!” or other similarly articulate and analytical remarks.

There are faces you’ll have seen repeatedly in the Lookbook, and for good reason. The Beckermans and their inimitable sense of style amaze us on a regular basis. This week, we have Caillianne, completely decked out in scarlet red, from sunnies to dress to bag to boots. Even the wall behind her is red – that’s commitment.

We love when Dani and Bianca, also frequent features, do the matchy-matchy thing; this week, the blogger duo took on metallic and white and completely killed it, as per usual. Alyssa, one of our favourites from the Prairie provinces, is always surprising us. This week, she took her super sweet floral print frock and floppy hat to the next level when she paired them with a pair of intergalactic metallic silver booties. Genius, really.

As for Ivy, we just have no words. She blows us away week after week with her posts from the West coast, and we can’t help but feature her time and time again. This week’s black and white get-up was no exception. We bow down.

Keep ‘em coming, Canada! We’re loving what you’re wearing.

Spotted from the Backseat: Power Ball 2013 Edition

On June 6, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery threw its 15th annual fundraiser and Toronto’s most highly anticipated summer art party, Power Ball: 15 Minutes. Even Mother Nature and her torrential downpours couldn’t keep the city’s social set from flocking to the Harbourfront for an evening of art, fashion, and the types of shenanigans you’ll never witness at another “ball”. We’re looking at you, brave lady in her birthday suit (yes, really).

With DJs Deko-ze and Physical Therapy serving up the beats (Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young and Beautiful’ made our night) and Marc Thuet and his team supplying the eats (pulled pork sliders for the win!), we roamed from room to room, taking in the strange and wonderful art installations and partygoer style. From designer Amanda Lew Kee‘s hard-to-miss floral headdress to PR maven Susan Chong‘s summery white Greta Constantine frock to blogger Stefania Yarhi‘s voluminous floral print coat, Power Ball was a delight as usual, sartorially speaking and otherwise.

Check out the gallery below for some of our favourite looks from Power Ball: 15 Minutes. And if you’re kicking yourself for missing this year’s bash, well, you should be.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – June 7, 2013 Edition

Aliya Akhmedeeva of Click To See More, Montreal

It seems we had a bit of a false start to summer. It’s been wet and cold in Toronto, so the shorts and leg-baring frocks we saw over the past few weeks were temporarily abandoned. The sartorial solution? Long, flowing dresses of the sort Aliya donned this week. Hers was a colourful floral print in a lovely silhouette that made for a rather dreamy style shot.

Anik sported an embroidered white frock with a boxy shape that can be tough to pull off, but she totally rocked it with a black leather moto jacket, one of our favourite summer evening pairings. Lolitta found a creative way to battle the cold. She styled her asymmetrical dress-slash-top with pants for a rather fierce take on the black and white trend.

It’s been tricky weather to dress for, but our favourite style bloggers appear to be completely unfazed by Mother Nature’s shenanigans.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 31, 2013 Edition

Julia Monson of Julia Monson, Toronto

Last week on the Lookbook, it was all abouts shorts, shorts, shorts. This week? Summery frocks and bare gams.

Julia served up a look that was part angel, part surfer girl, donning a blue abstract print dress and matching floral headband. Cara‘s ensemble was just as eye-catching, with her palm tree print number and fierce lace-up sandals.

Gracie sported what she termed a “psychadelic” gemstone print dress under a leather biker jacket – obviously a year-round necessity. Bianca couldn’t resist a touch of leather too; she decided to go sweet this week, with an off-the-shoulder rose-print frock and an unexpected leather ball cap. Nice touch.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 24, 2013 Edition

Anik Lacasse-Richard of Montreal In Style, Montreal

Shorts season is officially here! It looks like style bloggers across the country have stored away their leather leggings for the season and finally taken their shorts out to play. We’re especially loving the shorts + outerwear looks we spotted on the Canadian style blogs this week.

Aliya wore her cute denim cut-offs under a classic beige trench, while Anik paired her chic black shorts with a smart camel coloured blazer. Vanessa went for an all black leather look, sporting her faux leather shorts with the coolest faux leather vest ever and a matching leather cap to boot. Black leather never looked so summer perfect.

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 17, 2013 Edition

Chris Nicholas for, Newfoundland

Bare legs, exposed midriffs, open-toe shoes…it must be summer! Not officially, but patio season has definitely begun, and so has style blogging season. Only the very brave venture out into the Canadian cold for personal style shoots, so with the arrival of friendlier temperatures also comes a bevy of fresh faces on the Canadian street style scene. If not new, at least re-emerging from winter hibernation finally.

We’re rather excited to be featuring our first style-blogging Newfoundlander! Chris looks very dapper in blue gingam and a matching cobalt skinny tie, but it was his anchor-print socks that really stole our hearts. Sandy, another newcomer to the Lookbook this week, is also making quite the first impression with her head-to-toe paisley look and über cool handcuff clutch.

Many more style bloggers are sure to come out of the woodwork in the coming summer months, and we can’t wait to introduce them to you!

The Canadian Street Style Lookbook – May 10, 2013 Edition

Sydney Hoffman for, Toronto

This week’s Lookbook is an unintentional ‘who wore it best?’ moment. A certain Zara fold over skort has become a favourite among Canadian style bloggers, and we’re loving all the different ways it’s being styled.

Ivy wore her white skort with a sculptural jacket and oversized printed tee for a futuristic vibe, while Joandy paired hers with floral, vintage Versace for a summery feel. Lisa went for a sportier look with her black skort, donning a chic blazer, dapper loafers and a cute panama hat for good measure.

So who wore it best? They’re all so good – it’s just impossible to choose just one.
