Admiring from the Backseat: Beyoncé at the Super Bowl 2013 Half-Time Show

All hail Queen Bey! Beyoncé‘s half-time show at Super Bowl XLVII was everything we dreamed it would be and more. A barely-there leather and lace get-up, all of our favourite dance moves, and a Destiny’s Child reunion to boot.

All that was missing was a Jay-Z cameo, but we’ll settle for the name of the designer who created her fierce ensemble. Surely not Tina Knowles? UPDATE: The bodysuit was custom made by New York-based designer and relative unknown Rubin Singer (thanks for the tip Jess!). Will we be seeing versions of it at our local fast fashion retailer in the coming months?

Relive Beyoncé’s Super Bowl half-time show from “Crazy In Love” to “Halo” over here.

Admiring from the Backseat: Jennifer Hudson at Super Bowl 2013

We’ve been counting down the minutes until Beyonce’s half-time show performance ever since it was announced, but Jennifer Hudson‘s appearance minutes before the Super Bowl was definitely noteworthy. Her rendition of “America the Beautiful” with the Sandy Hook Elementary chorus was a touching and emotional moment. We also couldn’t help but notice how chic she looked.

The Grammy Award winner chose a Monika Chiang high neck leather top, L’Wren Scott pencil skirt and Saint Laurent ankle cuff pumps for her Super Bowl gig. It was sophisticated with an edge, and perfect for the occasion.

Admiring from the Backseat: Screen Actors Guild Awards 2013 Edition

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2013

The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the second major stop of the 2013 awards season, was held last night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. We sat dutifully in front of our television watching the red carpet pre-show, almost threw said television out the window when our local channel aired an interior design reality competition rather than the first half hour of the SAGs, and then finally caught up on all the awards, fashion and awkward on-stage banter in time to bring you this post.

We were underwhelmed by the decidedly lacklustre red carpet (remember last year‘s fabulous looks from Emma, Michelle and Zoe?), but still managed to cobble together a tight list of our 5 best dressed of the evening. Anne Hathaway looked lovely in a fresh-off-the-runway Giambattista Valli frock, as did Jennifer Garner in a gold, embellished number by Oscar de la Renta. Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman sported their usual, glamourous fare, this time from Marchesa and Vivienne Westwood respectively, while Kerry Washington was the only leading lady to take a sartorial risk that we think paid off with an unexpected Rodarte design.

Did you catch the 2013 SAG Awards? Who made your best dressed list?

MObama Favourite Jason Wu’s 10 Most Memorable Red Carpet Moments

Jason Wu‘s name has been on everyone’s lips since the moment Michelle Obama arrived at the 2013 Inaugural Ball this week in his custom scarlet red gown, the second time she’s bestowed such an honour on him. The New York-based designer has developed quite the following since that fateful day 4 years ago when MObama stepped out in his ivory creation at her first Inaugural Ball. He’s collaborated with Target, launched his contemporary line Miss Wu, and continued to dress leading ladies around the world in his glamourous and sophisticated designs.

Because we’re obsessed with all things Wu – and Mrs. Obama has given us the perfect excuse – we’ve gleefully trolled through the archives and rounded up the 10 most memorable red carpet moments courtesy of Jason Wu, inauguration outfits notwithstanding. From Diane Kruger (pictured above) and Karlie Kloss at the Met Ball to Zoe Saldana and Jessica Pare on the awards show circuit, the designer’s devotees always look nothing short of spectacular. Whether it’s a whimsical bow-topped gown for Michelle Williams, a pink princess frock for Fan Bingbing or a sexy LBD for Jaime King, Jason Wu never fails to deliver.

Admiring from the Backseat: Golden Globe Awards 2013 Edition

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen

Golden Globes 2013 turned out to be quite the night! Honourary Backseat Styler D joined us for this year’s festivities and we spent the evening critiquing the red carpet fashions, accusing each other of cheating in the GG pool, and playing Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s Golden Globes drinking game. Lots of controversy, to say the least. So much so, in fact, that we couldn’t even narrow the best dressed field down to 10.

While the red carpet as a whole left much to be desired, favourites like Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen, Anne Hathaway in Chanel and Julianne Moore in Tom Ford were shoo-ins. Ladies in red Jennifer Lawrence (in Christian Dior) and Naomi Watts (in Zac Posen) also made the cut, as did Kerry Washington in an embellished Miu Miu frock. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked drop-dead gorgeous in a bow-adorned Saint Laurent gown, while Julianna Margulies and Michelle Dockery both took risks with their Pucci and Alexandre Vauthier gowns that paid off.

The final spot in our top ten best dressed of the night was a toss-up between Rachel Weisz in a sheer, polka-dotted number by Louis Vuitton (S’s pick) and Katharine McPhee‘s revealing Theyskens’ Theory dress (T’s pick). Rather than settle the issue via a breakdance fight, we decided to expand our list to 11 and call it a night.

Admiring from the Backseat: 10 Best Red Carpet Looks from 2012

Diane Kruger in custom Nina Ricci at Cannes International Film Festival

From awards shows to movie premieres to fashion parties, it’s been quite a year on the red carpets. We saw new sartorial heroines emerge, like Jennifer Lawrence during her Hunger Games promotional tour, as well as established greats like Michelle Williams and Diane Kruger continue to bring their A games. With stunning look after stunning look to choose from, selecting a short list of the 10 best dressed of 2012 was a near impossible task. With much deliberation, we finally settled on the 10 that made our jaws drop and raised the red carpet bar.

What do you think of our top 10 best dressed of the year – did we nail it, or did we miss some of your favourites? Do tell!

Admiring from the Backseat: Diane Kruger in Jason Wu

Diane Kruger stepping out on to a red carpet is always good fashion blog fodder, but it’s especially so when she sports a design by Jason Wu. The actress attended the opening of the Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique at the Place Vendome in Paris last night, and looked downright fabulous in a navy lace jumpsuit from Wu’s Spring 2013 collection and vintage-looking animal print fur coat on top.

A jumpsuit has been on my wish list for some time now, and while I’d originally envisioned a chic black version, that just won’t do anymore. I’m now officially on the hunt for a jumpsuit just as glam as Diane’s. No easy task, I’m afraid.

Admiring from the Backseat: American Music Awards 2012 Edition

Elisha Cuthbert

The 2012 American Music Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and though I missed them I obviously caught up on the red carpet fashion this morning. It wasn’t the Oscars, that’s for sure, but there were a few pleasant surprises – five, to be exact.

Elisha Cuthbert, who I now have a soft spot for ever since she donned that incredible VAWK dress, stunned in a glamourous gold column gown by Georges ChakraKerry Washington was a ray of sunshine in yellow lace Stella McCartney, Stacy Keibler showed off her gams in a Collette Dinnigan embellished mini, and red carpet favourite Ginnifer Goodwin was pretty in pale pink Oscar de la Renta.

Rounding out the top five was rapper Nicki Minaj - yes, you read right! – who looked the best I’ve ever seen her, unhinged facial expressions aside. She cleaned up nice in a bright coloured Monique Lhuillier gown. How shocked must Monique have been to get that phone call?

Who were your best dressed at the 2012 AMA’s?

Admiring from the Backseat: CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards 2012 Edition

Coco Rocha

The American fashion industry gathered in New York last night for the 9th Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund gala dinner. Greg Chait, founder of cashmere label The Elder Statesman, won the coveted cash prize and mentorship program, while jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer Maguire and footwear designer Tabitha Simmons were named the runners-up.

The other story, of course, was what gala attendees wore, and we’ve gone ahead and picked our five best dressed of the evening. Red carpet favourite Emma Stone was an easy pick; the actress was decked out in a peplum look straight off the Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 runway. Dakota Fanning, in pink Jason Wu Spring 2013, also chose a peplum for the occasion. Rounding out the top five were Coco Rocha in a printed Sono number, Karlie Kloss in a sheer, ladylike ensemble, and Alexa Chung in an unexpected pairing of baby blue and red.
