Admiring from the Backseat: Grammy Awards 2014 Edition

Beyonce in Michael Costello

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles last night, and we were glued to our televisions from red carpet coverage to closing performance. There were plenty of highlights, on stage (Daft Punk! Pharrell!) and off, sartorial (Valentino! Gucci!) or otherwise.

Beyonce may not have taken any Grammys home, but she won the whole night by our measure, with a fierce performance to open the show and best dressed honours to boot. Queen Bey followed up the bodysuit she wore to perform “Drunk In Love” with Jay-Z with a gorgeous white gown by Project Runway alumnus Michael Costello, who we totally cheered for during Season 8. Biggest moment of his career to date, definitely.

In other, non-Bey news, Ciara and her baby bump rocked the red carpet in a very chic custom Emilio Pucci, and Katy Perry made our jaws drop in exquisite, fresh-off-the-runway Valentino couture. Our obsession with tuxedos was reignited thanks to Madonna‘s dapper Ralph Lauren getup, and Gucci Première continued to knock our socks off this awards season with a stunning metallic number donned by Taylor Swift.

That rounds out our top 5 best dressed from the 2014 Grammys. Who was on your list?

Admiring from the Backseat: Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014 Edition

Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi

The 2014 edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles last night, and this awards season’s crop of stars hit the red carpet in glamourous fashion.

Cate Blanchett and Lupita Nyong’o continued their respective style streaks in stunning Givenchy and Gucci creations, while Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence all improved on their Golden Globes showings last week. Sofia Vergara and Claire Danes, two of our favourite actresses from the small screen, also brought their sartorial A games in gorgeous Donna Karan Atelier and Vionnet metallic gowns.

Check out our 10 best dressed from the 2014 SAG Awards. Did we get it right in your books?

Admiring from the Backseat: Golden Globe Awards 2014 Edition

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards kicked off awards season last night with what was quite possibly the show’s best red carpet to date. Being scheduled first in the sartorial marathon that is awards season has historically meant that our favourite leading ladies have reserved their most gorgeous gown choices for the SAGs and Oscars, but it certainly didn’t look that way this year.

Sure, there will always be some train wrecks here and there, but the 2014 Golden Globes style game was rather stunning on the whole. Newcomer and rising red carpet star Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren and bona fide fashion goddess Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé won best dressed hands down, but the other stars who round out our top 10 weren’t far behind.

Who was on your best dressed list?

Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren Spring 2014
She had one of our favourite red carpet looks of 2013, and with jaw-dropping looks like this fiery red cape dress, she’s sure to be tops in 2014 as well.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé Fall 2013
All hail Queen Cate, who looked as regal as ever in an ethereal black lace gown and elegant hair and makeup to boot. We want to be her when we grow up.

Naomi Watts in Tom Ford
Naomi never disappoints on the red carpet, and her high-wattage column dress last night was no exception. Not even a well-timed photo-bombing can distract from this look.

Olivia Wilde in Gucci Première
Olivia and Gucci put on a lesson in dressing a pregnant woman for the red carpet; the actress and her emerald green sequin design were a match made in heaven.

Emilia Clarke in custom Proenza Schouler
Proenza isn’t yet a go-to for red carpet fashion, but the designers certainly made a strong case for it with this beautiful number worn by the Game of Thrones star.

Admiring from the Backseat: 10 Best Red Carpet Looks of 2013

Angelina Jolie in custom Ralph & Russo at ‘World War Z’ Berlin premiere

From awards shows to film festivals to fashion fetes, 2013 has been quite a year on the red carpets. With 365 days worth of drop-dead gorgeous looks to choose from, selecting a short list of the 10 best dressed of the year actually turned out to be an easier task than we anticipated. That’s just how fabulous the 10 looks that made our list really were.

Repeat winners like Rooney Mara and Diane Kruger continued to bring their A games in 2013, making our list two years in a row. The rest of the list was rounded out by established stars like Cate Blanchett and Marion Cotillard, future hall-of-famers Jessica Chastain and Kerry Washington, newcomers like Lupita Nyongo and Shu Qui, and surprise contender Rihanna.

Are you in as much awe as we are over these 10 best dressed ladies and their stunning looks, or did we miss some of your favourites from the year?

Admiring from the Backseat: Miley Cyrus in Maison Martin Margiela

After the MTV VMA’s, we thought we’d never see the day when we’d want to feature one Miley Cyrus on this here blog, but it seems that day has come. The singer walked the Z100 Jingle Ball 2013 red carpet at Madison Square Garden on December 13, and despite our reservations about her, we kind of loved her look. A lot.

Miley chose an incredibly chic Maison Martin Margiela ensemble for the occasion, pairing a sheer, mandarin-collar blouse from the Spring 2014 collection with navy and yellow hand-painted tuxedo trousers from Fall 2013. She styled her getup perfectly with a silver cuff and sandals by Celine.

We can’t believe we’re saying this, but we’d steal her look in a heartbeat. In fact, those pants are now on our end-of-season sale wish list. Are you loving Miley’s latest look too?

Admiring from the Backseat: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

We’ve been counting down the days until The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theatres on November 22, but with every new trailer or commercial we see, we’re starting to lose our patience. Thankfully, we’ve had the film’s premieres around the world and the cast’s red carpet appearances to keep us occupied until the big day.

Jennifer Lawrence has been rocking Dior after Dior during this premiere tour, and her choice for this past weekend’s showing in Paris was no different. JLaw donned a decidedly darker design from Dior’s Fall 2013 haute couture collection, complete with deep red lip, edgy new ‘do, and even some side boob action. Fierce.

But, seriously, is it November 22 yet?

Check out the images below for an even closer look at some of the pieces in the line-up, and then triple check that the November 14 launch date is marked in your calendar!

Admiring from the Backseat: Primetime Emmy Awards 2013 Edition

Claire Danes in Armani Privé Fall 2013

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles last night, and though we sadly missed all 18 hours of televised red carpet and awards show coverage due to some poor travel planning on our part, we wouldn’t dare shirk our duties when it comes to critiquing the myriad of fabulous (and not so fabulous) looks of our favourite small screen actresses.

From the ethereal, like Outstanding Actress in a Drama winner Claire Danes (woohoo Homeland!) in Armani Privé and Kerry Washington in Marchesa, to the va-va-voom, including Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang and Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein Collection, the Emmys red carpet certainly delivered.

The ladies of Mad Men in particular definitely brought their A games, with January Jones, Jessica Pare and Elisabeth Moss all landing in our top 10. Alyson Hannigan in purple Marchesa, Kate Mara in a white J. Mendel and Michelle Dockery in two-toned Prada rounded out our best dressed list.

Did they make yours too?

The Toronto International Film Festival officially wrapped up yesterday; the red carpets have been rolled up and the celebrities have returned to Hollywood, but we’re still riding that high that only the film festival can bring. We’re going to miss our favourite actresses walking the streets of Toronto in haute couture frocks, but awards season will be here before we know it.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up our 10 favourite red carpet looks of TIFF 2013 to help with the withdrawal. From Julia Roberts in a gorgeous red Dolce & Gabbana number to Dakota Fanning in a jaw-dropping Atelier Versace gown, this year’s crop of stars brought their sartorial A games, making for the most fabulous Festival to date.

10 Best Red Carpet Looks from Toronto International Film Festivals Past

Carey Mulligan in Christopher Kane Resort 2011 at TIFF 2010 (Image credit: Jason Merritt/Getty)

Our fair city is all abuzz this week with Toronto International Film Festival preparations: the red carpets have been steam cleaned, the celeb gifting lounges stocked up, and the film reels set to play. The TIFF circus officially starts tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more excited. Ryan Gosling may not be making an appearance at the festival this year, but if there’s one thing that gets us even more into a tizzy than The Gos, it’s red carpet fashion.

Over the next 11 days, couture pieces flown in from Europe will be spotlighted alongside the very best Canadian designers have to offer, and we can’t wait to take it all in. In the meantime, we’ve rounded up 10 of our absolute favourite looks from TIFFs gone by for your viewing pleasure.

Epic past red carpet moments like Carey Mulligan in whimsical, galaxy-print Christopher Kane, Eva Mendes in an ultra-glam black Andrew Gn gown and Blake Lively in red-hot, floral-embellished Chanel Haute Couture are going to be a challenge for this year’s crop of stars to top.
